MLB Odds: Will Sonny Gray Pitch for A’s Versus Jays?

Athletics Sonny Gray

Contenders Looking Hard at Sonny Gray

The Toronto Blue Jays (44-54, –18.55 betting units) know they’ll be hosting the Oakland Athletics (44-54, –7.27 units) this Tuesday night. Who will pitch for the A’s is the question? Oakland has penciled Gray in to start. He’s been the subject of trade rumors heading towards the July 31 deadline.

Oddsmakers have Toronto as a -110-moneyline favorite. The total is now at 9.5. The game starts at 7:07 PM ET on Sportsnet.

If Gray (3.38 FIP) does take the hill at Rogers Centre, the Jays could be in for another long night. Oakland’s ace has allowed just six earned runs in his last five starts combined. The A’s won four of those games. They have improve to 8-7 (+0.35 units) in Gray’s 15 starts on the season.

The former All-Star has also limited current Toronto bats to a .673 lifetime OPS. Jose Bautista is 5-of-12 against Gray with a homer and a fat 1.051 OPS.

The Jays are in a freefall and their roster is riddled with injuries. Reliever Cesar Valdez (6.31 FIP in 19.1 innings) is expected to throw the first pitch for the Jays. Valdez is a 32-year-old journeyman. The righty who’s bounced around the minors since turning pro in 2006. This is his second stint with the Jays organization. Oakland designated him for assignment in early May.
