5th Ranked USC Trojans Travel To face the Cal Bears

USC Trojans Play First Road Game of 2017

The 5th ranked USC Trojans and the Cal Golden Bears will meet at California Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon. The game is set to kickoff at 3:30 pm EST and will be televised by ABC.

This week the Trojans make their first road trip of the season. They have to travel to Berkeley to take on a surprising Cal team. The Bears have exceeded expectations so far and will be jacked-up to face one of its chief rivals in its Pac 12 opener.

Cal Looks to Prove Start is no Fluke

Last time out for California, they were a 27-16 winner as they battled Ole Miss Rebels at home. California covered in the match as a +7-point underdog, while 43 combined points moved the game UNDER for totals bettors.

The Bears pulled off a road win against a pretty good North Carolina team in the season opener. Then they struggled more than they should against Weber State. Last week they made a statement with a 27-16 home win over Mississippi.

First-year head coach Justin Wilcox seems to have transformed a Cal team that had little defensive initiative under previous head coach Sonny Dykes into a defensive force. Wilcox was the defensive coordinator at Wisconsin last year.

Inside linebacker Devante Downs leads the Pac-12 in tackles. Last week he had 14 tackles, two sacks and an interception as the Bears shut out Ole Miss in the second half. The Rebels had fewer than 100 yards after halftime.

USC Trojans Are Injury Depleted on Defense

USC was a 27-24 winner in their most recent outing at home against Texas Longhorns. They failed to cover the -16.5-point spread as favorites, while the total score (51) made winners of UNDER bettors.

A rash of injuries  has hit on the Trojans' defense. Defensive end Rasheem Green has a high ankle sprain. Outside linebacker Porter Gustin has toe and shoulder issues. Defensive tackle Marlon Tuipulotu has knee problems, and linebacker John Houston Jr. has a neck stinger. They missed all or part of the Texas game and are questionable for this week.

Trojan QB Sam Darnold  has demonstrated his ability to make big plays when USC needed him. With that being said, the Trojans have not been nearly as dominant as expected. And all three games were at home at the Los Angeles Coliseum. How will they react in a hostile environment?
