ALDS Game 2: Astros Look to Go up 2-0 on Red Sox

Good Pitching Matchup in ALDS Game 2

The Boston Red Sox and the Houston Astros will play on Friday when they meet at Minute Maid Park. This ALDS Game 2 matchup will start at 2:05 pm EST. Fox Sports 1 has the telecast.

Oddsmakers have the Astros as -185-moneyline favorites and the total is at 8.

Drew Pomeranz will be the starting pitcher for the Red Sox on this day. Left hander Pomeranz is 17-6 this season with a 3.32 ERA.

Pomeranz was on the hill when Boston clinched the AL East on Sept. 30 against the Astros. He allowed one run on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts over six innings in a 6-3 victory.

Pomeranz did not factor in the decision in a 2-1 win over the Astros on June 16. He allowed just one run on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings. He is 2-2 with a 3.69 ERA over 12 career games against Houston.

Today's game will mark the third career postseason appearance for Pomeranz. Today is his first start. He worked out of the bullpen for the Red Sox in the 2016 ALDS against the Cleveland Indians.

ALDS Game 2 sees Keuchel in Prime Form

It'll be Dallas Keuchel toeing the rubber for the Astros in this contest. Left hander Keuchel is 14-5 with a 2.90 ERA so far this season.

 

The 2015 Cy Young Award winner had to take a backseat when Houston acquired right-hander Justin Verlander on Aug. 31.  Keuchel was forced to give up his position as the face of the rotation. It was not an insult to give it up to the 2011 American League MVP and Cy Young Award winner.

That shift was confirmed when Verlander earned the nod for Game 1 of the American League Division Series. The move bumping Keuchel to Game 2 on Friday at Minute Maid Park. Verlander pitched well in the 8-2 Astros victory.

Keuchel labored to recover from midseason neck discomfort. He found his stride down the stretch of the season. He went 2-1 with a 2.00 ERA during his final three starts. In three career appearances against the Red Sox, Keuchel is 0-1 with a 9.88 ERA.

Pitching at Minute Maid Park is meaningful for Keuchel. He is 36-21 with a 2.94 ERA at home in his career. He finished 15-0 with a 1.46 ERA at Minute Maid Park in 2015. In the his ALDS start against the Kansas City Royals, he allowed one run on five hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings in a 4-2 victory.
