First Night Game in Michigan Rivals Storied History

The Michigan State Spartans and the 7th-ranked Michigan Wolverines will renew their storied Big Ten rivaly on Saturday when they battle at Michigan Stadium. The game will be televised by ABC Sports and kickoff is set for a few minutes after 7:30 pm EST.

For the first time in the 110-year history of the rivalry, the Spartans and Wolverines will battle each other in a night game. It's a time that administrators at each school tried to avoid. In the end, they had no power with television and the Big Ten having control over prime-time slots.

The concerns administrators had are traffic and parking headaches. Also the added time fans now have to tailgate and consume alcohol before the game. The fact there will be a larger congregation outside the stadium of fans who don't have tickets was worrisome as well.

Oddsmakers have made the Wolverines an 11-point favorite. The total is at 40.5.

Michigan Wants to Take Control in the Big Ten East

The Wolverines won its last outing, a 28-10 result against the Purdue Boilermakers on September 23. Michigan covered in that game as a -13.5-point favorite, while the 38 combined points took the game UNDER the total.

The team was off last week and head coach Jim Harbaugh did offer some breaking news on Monday. Senior John O'Korn will be the starting quarterback. Wilton Speight was the original starter. He suffered an undisclosed injury in the first quarter against Purdue. The QB is out for "multiple weeks," according to Harbaugh.

O'Korn went 16 of 28 for 270 yards, a touchdown and an interception in place of Speight against Purdue.

The Wolverines are first in the Big Ten in total yards allowed on defense. They lead with 203.3 yards, They lead in run defense at 69.3 yards a game, and pass defense at 134 yards a game. They have allowed just 13.5 points a game.

Michigan State has Already Matched Last Years Win Total

Michigan State was a 17-10 winner in its last match at home against the Iowa Hawkeyes. They covered the -3.5-point spread as favorites, while the total score of 27 sent UNDER bettors to the payout window.

Michigan Statehas already equaled its win total from a disastrous 3-9 season in 2016.

The Spartan offense is led by quarterback Brian Lewerke. He has been very efficient in the passing game. Lewerke is 84 of 133 for 963 yards. He has eight touchdowns and two interceptions. He also has running ability. That makes him difficult to defend. He leads the team with 248 yards rushing. Running back LJ Scott is getting the bulk of the carries out of the backfield. He is averaging only 3.7 yards on 58 carries.

The Spartans enter the game third in the Big Ten in yards allowed per game. They are only giving up 248.3 ypg. Their  run defense is only allowing 96 yards a game. The D is second in pass defense giving up 152.3 yards a game.
