NFL Week 6: Saints Host Lions in the Big Easy

Saints and Lions Trying to Find Groove

The Detroit Lions and the New Orleans Saints meet on Sunday  at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Kickoff is set for 1 pm EST. FOX Sports will have the kickoff and the game is broadcast regionally.

Oddsmakers opened the Saints as -3-point favorites versus the Lions, while the game's total opened at 51. The line now shows the Saints as a 5-point favorite. The total is down to 50.5.

The Saints are fresh from a week off. They are also coming off of consecutive wins over Carolina and Miami. A win today will put the Saints above .500 for the first time since the end of the 2013 season.

The Detroit Lions have lost twice in the last three weeks to Atlanta and Carolina by a combined seven points.

Saints Look for Consistency

Last time out for New Orleans, they were a 20-0 winner as they battled the Miami Dolphins on the road. The Saints covered in the match as a -3.5-point favorite, while 20 combined points moved the game UNDER for totals bettors.

The Saints will be looking for their first three-game winning streak since October 2015. They recovered from a 1-4 start to reach 4-4.

Since 2014 the Saints are only 11-14 at the Superdome. This year they have a younger and more talented defense. Early on there are signs the team is beginning to improve defensively.

New Orleans is one of only three teams in NFL history not to have committed a turnover in the first four games of a season. That streak could be in jeopardy.  The Lions lead the NFC, and are tied for second in the NFL with a plus-8 takeaway margin.

Lions are Battling Injuries

The Lions were a 27-24 loser in their most recent outing at home against the Carolina Panthers. They failed to cover the -2-point spread as favorites, while the total score (51) made winners of OVER bettors.

In the loss last week to the Panthers, the Lions lost their best defensive lineman. Haloti Ngata is possibly out for the season with a first-half elbow injury. Quarterback Matthew Stafford was limping badly in the fourth quarter with ankle and hamstring injuries. He soldiered through and almost sparked another late comeback.

Stafford's lack of mobility, coupled with Detroit's porous offensive line play, have led to 12 sacks in the last two games. Stafford is averaging only 6.45 yards per attempt. That is a full yard fewer than Brees.

The Lions have defeated the Saints in each of the last three seasons. In order they are: 24-23 in 2014 in Detroit, and 35-27 in 2015 and 28-13 and 2016 in the Superdome.
