West Virginia Hosts UVA in Tuesday Night Hoops

West Virginia Athletics

West Virginia will try to Speed Things up Against the Wahoos

The fans at WVU Colliseum will be 15th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers and the 18th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers when they take their seats on Tuesday night. Tip-off is set for 7 pm EST. ESPNU will have the television coverage.

As usual the past few years, Virginia is unbeaten and playing Tony Bennett's trademark shut-down defense. West Virginia, has one loss, is sticking with its full-court press and riding a seven-game winning streak.

Oddsmakers opened the Mountaineers as -2.5-point favorites versus the Cavaliers, while the game's total opened at 133.5. WVA is now a 4-point favorite and the total has settled at 133.

West Virginia Looks to Bust UVA Sagging Defense

The teams have split their last two meetings. West Virginia has sometimes shown the patience for attacking the Cavaliers' sagging defense. At other times a reliance on tough shots fueled lengthy scoreless stretches. They will try to limit those tonight

West Virginia's veteran backcourt of Jevon Carter and Daxter Miles pknows what it is like to play against he UVA Defense. Coach Bob Huggins has been trying to educate a group of newcomers during a four-day break.

West Virginia is led by All-American candidate Carter. He is averaging 19 points, 5.8 assists, 4.5 steals per game. The sometimes-explosive Miles averages 14.9 points and 3.8 rebound.

Since dropping the season opener against Texas A&M, the Mountaineers are averaging 93 points across seven wins. That pace will be hard to match with Virginia allowing only 50 points per game.

UVA Looks to Handle West Virginia's Press and Up-Tempo Play

UVA coach Tony Bennett faces an tough task as well. He has to prepare his players to handle the in-your-face trapping of "Press Virginia" that generates more than 22 turnovers per game.

Transfer guard Nigel Johnson played his first two seasons at Kansas State. His teams went 1-3 against West Virginia in those Big 12 games. Now he's gearing up with his ACC teammates for another run of the gauntlet.

Guard Kyle Guy leads Virginia at 16.6 points per game. Guy is shooting nearly 43 percent from 3-point range. He made five 3s during Saturday's 75-54 win over Lehigh. He has also shown he can penetrate as well.

Guard Devon Hall averages 11.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. He is also excellent at the Charity Stripe. He is 20 of 21 this season for a Virginia team that makes 81 percent of its free throws.
