Giants and Mariners Should be Classic Pitchers Duel
The San Francisco Giants will be fighting to snap a losing streak on Wednesday when they take on the Seattle Mariners at AT&T Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 pm EST. This has the makings of a classic pitchers duel.
Oddsmakers opened the Giants as -141-moneyline favorites versus the Mariners, while the game's total opened at 7. The Giants are now -130 on the moneyline and the total is 7.5 Under -115.
These perennial aces will go head-to-head for the first time in their illustrious careers Wednesday. That is hard to believe with the advent of inter-league play.
The Mariners will give the ball to starter Felix Hernandez in this one. Hernandez is 1-0 this season with a 0.00 ERA. King Felix went on opening day for Seattle. He shut out the Cleveland Indians on two hits over 5 1/3 innings in a 2-1 win. He walked two and struck out four.
He has faced the Giants four times in his career, but never in San Francisco. He's gone 3-0 in the four starts with a 1.86 ERA. Hernandez will be pitching in the 27th different ballpark in his career. This is also the his 376th start.
The Giants will counter Hernandez with Johnny Cueto. Cueto has a 0.00 ERA to go along with a 0-0 record this season. Cueto actually pitched better than Hernandez in his first start. He took a perfect game into the seventh inning on the road against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
He wound up pitching seven shutout innings. He allowed just one hit, but got a no-decision in a game that was scoreless into the ninth inning. Joe Panik homered for a 1-0 Giants win.
Cueto has faced the Mariners just twice in his career. None as a member of the Giants. He's gone 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA.
Both Teams Facing Injury Bug
The Mariners jumped out of the gate quick in the rare matchup of West Coast rivals. They used a four-run first inning to help amass a 6-4 victory in the Giants' home opener Tuesday.
Nelson Cruz, but won't have a DH at all in the National League park.
The Mariners' Nelson Cruz was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday, retroactive to Sunday. He sprained his right ankle in Saturday's home game against Cleveland.
The Mariners already were missing 25-homer catcher Mike Zunino. He is out with an oblique strain. Seattle's catchers have combined to go 1-for-13 in his absence.
The Mariners didn't need a power-hitting catcher or a DH while piling up 12 hits in Tuesday's win. Dee Gordon and Jean Segura had three hits each from the top of the lineup. The duo accounted for half the Seattle total. This is against a San Francisco staff that already had two shutouts this season.
Evan Longoria homered in his home debut for the Giants. Bruce Bochy hinted that he may start the series finale on the bench. Pablo Sandoval could make his first start of the season.
Sandoval has two career home runs against Hernandez in eight at-bats.
