How to Bet On Sports - Hot NHL Stanley Cup Betting Trends

How to Bet On Sports - Hot NHL Stanley Cup Betting Trends

The second season in both the NHL and the NBA gets underway in April with the start of the playoffs. While just about every best-of-seven basketball series in the NBA goes chalk, playoff hockey in the NHL is different. This is because it sets the stage for upsets when it comes to Bet On Sports.   This is where every team in the tournament has a chance to get hot and make a deep run.

Betting on the NHL playoffs is all about riding the hottest trends as they unfold. NHL bettors get to enjoy this excitement over the course of this four-round run to a Stanley Cup title.

Riding a Hot Team

Over the course of an 82-game regular season, everyone of the 16 teams in the NHL playoffs has gotten white hot and ice cold at times. The hot teams you are looking to ride right out of the gate in the opening round are the ones that turned up the heat down the stretch run of their final 10 games.

Looking at this year’s playoff field in the Eastern Conference, one team that jumps off the list is the Washington Capitals at 8-2 over their last 10 games. The Capitals have been one of the best regular-season teams in the NHL over the past decade, but their infamous early round exits in the postseason are an almost annual occurrence.

This season, Washington opens the playoffs as one of two fourth-favorites (along with Toronto) to win the Eastern Conference title at +600 odds.  With the bar set as low as it has been in recent years, the Capitals could be poised for that deep run everyone has been waiting for.

The Winnipeg Jets (9-1) and the Anaheim Dukcs (8-1-1) would qualify as hot teams in the Western Conference. The key to betting hot teams is to ride them early. An 0-2 start to an opening round series has a way of throwing ice on that fire.

Riding a Hot Goal Scorer

Looking at this season’s top goal scorers in the NHL, the Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin topped the list with 49. He has been one of the most prolific goal scorers over the course of his 12-year NHL career. In addition, he has been known to go MIA in the goal-scoring department in the postseason. If he starts scoring goals early in Washington’s opening round series against Columbus, this would be even more reason to ride the Capitals this year.

Similar to Washington, the top goal scorer in the West just so happens to play on the hottest team in that conference. Right winger Patrik Lane is Winnipeg’s top goal scorer with 44. He has only tallied one goal in his last 10 games to lessen his value as a hot goal scorer heading into the Jets’ first round series against Minnesota. However, he has been known to score goals in bunches.  This could be the difference between an early exit and a deep playoff run for the Jets.

Riding a Hot Goalie

The most important factor for any team looking to make a run to a Stanley Cup title is a hot goalie. Trying to outscore every team you face in the postseason is a tough way to stick around in this tournament. You need a goaltender that can win a few games along the way by simply shutting the other team down.

The most interesting name on the list for the 16 playoff teams is veteran goalie Marc-Andre Fleury with the expansion Vegas Golden Knights. This team has already blown away everyone’s expectations with 109 points in 82 games during the Pacific Division title road. Fleury has been a big part of that success with a goals-against average of 2.24 complementing a .927 save percentage. He has only posted four wins in his last nine starts while missing some time with health issues, but a hot start against Los Angeles in the first round could make Vegas the ultimate hot betting team in this season’s Stanley Cup Playoffs.
