Dodgers Host the Cubs With Eye on HR Record

Los Angeles Dodgers

Dodgers Need 5 HR's to Tie Team Record

The fans at Dodger Stadium will see the Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Dodgers when they take their seats on Wednesday. The Dodgers are on the cusp of breaking the team home run record for the month of June. They currently have 48, while the record is 53.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, ESPN, NBCS Chicago, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH Kyle Hendricks (5-7, 3.73 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Alex Wood (3-5, 4.13)

Oddsmakers opened the Dodgers as -142-moneyline favorites versus the Cubs, while the game's total opened at 7.5. Now the Dodgers are -138-moneyline favorites and the total has held steady.

Dodgers HR Record is ONLY a Year Old

In June of last season the Dodgers hit 53 home runs. They were buoyed by the arrival of first baseman Cody Bellinger. No Dodgers team had ever hit that many in a month. The 1953 team did hit 49 home runs in two separate months.

The Dodgers' power explosion has been impressive. When you consider the slow start to the season. Not too many balls were flying out of the park. The Dodgers hit 25 home runs in March/April and 31 in May. Now they have exploded.

Not too long ago, Dodgers starter Alex Wood was trying to find some consistency. A mechanical adjustment on the club's previous home-stand, along with the no longer having leg cramps has allowed him to settle in.

Wood has won his last two starts. In his outing Friday against the New York Mets, he gave up two runs over six innings with seven strikeouts. He is 2-2 lifetime against the Cubs with a 2.93 ERA in eight games (five starts).

Cubs Lost 4 of last 5 of Hendricks Starts

Hendricks has given up three home runs in four June starts and 14 already this season. He may be blasted tonight. The most he has ever given up in a season is 17 in both 2015 and 2017.

The Cubs have lost four of his last five starts. On Thursday at Cincinnati, he lasted just 5 2/3 innings. The Cubs lost the first of four consecutive games against the Reds. Hendricks has given up 13 runs in June. He is 2-1 with a 3.15 ERA in three regular season starts against the Dodgers.

The Cubs have been in a prolonged offensive funk. But the tide appeared to turn Tuesday after hitting coach Chili Davis blasted them in a closed door meeting. They promptly scored 9 runs and had 15 hits in Wednesdays victory of the Dodgers.

Chicago hopes to continue receiving production from Javier Baez. The 25-year-old Puerto Rican went 4-for-5 with a pair of homers in Tuesday's win. That included a grand slam during a six-run sixth inning. It helped to end Chicago's five-game losing streak.

Baez finished a triple shy of the cycle. He has hit safely in seven of his last nine games and gone 8-for-20 with 10 RBI's over the first six contests of the Cubs' eight-game road trip.
