Diamondbacks and Cardinals Could be Pitchers Duel



The St. Louis Cardinals and the Arizona Diamondbacks meet on Wednesday night at Chase Field. Each team has a pitcher that could be auditioning for a spot on the National League All-Star Team.  Both have had under the radar, but quality seasons.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, ESPN, FS Midwest (St. Louis), FS Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Miles Mikolas (8-3, 2.61 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks LH Patrick Corbin (6-3, 3.14)

Both pitchers rank in the top 10 among NL qualifiers in several areas. The categories are ERA, WHIP, WAR and innings pitched. The only statistical difference is in strikeouts.

Corbin is tied for second and Mikolas is down the list a bit. Mikolas compensates by hitting spots and getting the majority of his outs on the ground.

Oddsmakers opened the Diamondbacks as -130-moneyline favorites versus the Cardinals, while the game's total opened at 8. The total has dropped to 7.5. The moneyline is not Arizona -135.

The teams split the first two games of the series.

Diamondbacks Look to Get Offense Consistent



Arizona got a three-run homer from Paul Goldschmidt to take a 4-2 victory Tuesday. Goldschmidt is hitting .413 with 11 homers and 28 RBIs over his past 26 games. He was named the National League Player of the Month for June after hitting .364 with eight multi-hit games.

Corbin, has made two straight quality starts. He has gived up only one run and in 13 innings, and did not receive a decision in either game. He had extra rest the last time through the rotation. This was after pitching seven scoreless innings while striking out 12 in a no-decision at Pittsburgh.

Jeff Mathis, one of two healthy catchers on the Arizona roster will catch Corbin for the third straight start. With Alex Avila on the disabled list, this is the best option.

Corbin has received only 3.65 runs per start. that is tied for the third fewest in the league. He is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in four career starts against St. Louis. He is 4-3 with a 3.69 ERA in 10 starts at home this season. He has pitched one of the five shutouts in the NL this season.

Cardinals Looking for Quality Pitching Tonight Against Diamondbacks



Mikolas has been a pleasant surprise for the Cardinals and one of the best in the major leagues. He signed with the Cardinals over the winter. Mikolas had three strong seasons for the Yomiuri Giants in the Japanese Central League.

He was 3-13 with a 2.18 ERA in 62 starts in Japan after being released by Texas in November 2014.

Mikolas has made 11 quality starts. That is tied for fourth in the league. After starting the season 6-0, he has lost three of his five decisions in June. He posted five quality starts and giving up one earned run in two of his losses.

He has pitched one of the five shutouts in the NL this season. Mikolas has posted a 2.68 ERA and 21-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio in six starts in June. He received one run or fewer of support in four of those outings.

Yadier Molina has hit 11 of his 12 home runs this season on the road.
