Colorado State Hosts Hawaii to Open 2018 Season

Colorado State Rams Athletics

Colorado State and Hawaii Look for Big 2018 Seasons

Hughes Stadium has a Week 1 contest on tap for Saturday as the Hawaii Warriors and the Colorado State Rams play their season openers. The Mountain West Conference will be up for grabs this season. This game may tell a lot about the season.

Oddsmakers opened the Rams as -14-point favorites versus the Warriors, while the game's total opened at 55.5. Colorado State is now a 17-point favorite. The total is settled at 59.

CBS Sports Network has the coverage with kickoff set for 7:30 pm EST.

The Mountain West opener may come with big bowl ramifications for each team.

Hawaii has a 13-game season with winnable dates against Duquesne and Rice. They will likely be the underdog in at least nine games after this streak. They had an ugly 3-9 season the Rainbow Warriors need to start out with something positive tonight.

They need to be able to take down a winnable road game like this. They lost last year 52-21 to the Rams.

Colorado State was able to get off to a hot start in its Week 0 game last season. They beat up and blew out a awful Oregon State team. Little did anyone know what a big deal that would be for the Rams’ bowl hopes. but they only won six games on the year. They needed that win, and will need one tonight.

Colorado State Has to Go Without Head Coach

Colorado State is dealing with something scarier than Hawaii. Head coach Mike Bobo is hospitalized with numbness in his feet. He’s expected to be fine. In the meantime, the Ram coaching staff is trying to figure out its situation in case the head man can’t go.

It is going to be mixed early on for CSU. Star QB Nick Stevens is done. So are three all-conference linemen, and Dallas Cowboy WR Michael Gallup. Chip in leading rusher Dalyn Dawkins and you lose a lot. They were from the Mountain West’s best offense.

WR Preston Williams, Jr. is a Tennessee transfer. He was a superstar recruit and is getting a shot to show what he can do after being suspended. He’s got all the tools to be special player. The kid has 6-4, 210-pound frame and track star speed and athleticism. He tore it up this spring.

With the addition of grad transfer QB KJ Carta-Samuels, and a few interesting new parts starting to rise up, the O should be okay.

New defensive coordinator John Jancek has to figure out the defensive front. He’s got a terrific linebacking stable to work with. There’s  enough talent in the secondary for it not to not be a massive problem.

Safety Jordan Fogal returning is going to be a big help. Corner Anthony Hawkins should be a good one. He has to start producing and quickly.

Hawaii Has to Get Run and Shoot Going Early Tonight

Hawaii has to get the Run and Shoot going quickly. The Rainbow Warriors were trying to throw it last year. This time around they’re going back to the old days. They will attack with an offense that will spread everyone out.

Hawaii will look for the lanes in the running game, and take over games with the quick-hitting controlled passing attack.

The program that would throw the ball around the yard 600 times a season is going back to the past. They still kept winging it after June JOnes, but not in quite the same way.

Defense was always optional, and the running game was occasionally decent. Hawaii football turned into the fun late night snack everyone craved. Just when you thought you didn’t have enough fun, there for you in the wee hours of the morning were 512 passing yards coming your way.

Head coach Nick Rolovich is making the move to what Hawaii football is supposed to be about. The Fun and Gun. It’s not like the run-and-shoot offensive attack ever vanished. It morphed into more of an up-tempo, diverse style.

To work it relied as much on balance at times as it did the big passing game. But a 2,814-yard 2017 passing season with 19 touchdowns? That used to be a good quarter for Timmy Chang.

The pieces may not be in place yet to return to the fun days. One thing is for sure the offense should be more fun to watch this season.
