The Seattle Mariners clash with the Oakland Athletics in a game with huge American League West implications. The A's won the series opener 7-6 last night and now they're just two games behind the Astros in the division while the Mariners are just 4.5 games out of first place.

Paxton beats the Astros despite going just 5 2/3 innings

James Paxton (10-5, 3.63 ERA, 1.09 WHIP) gave up four earned runs on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts across 5 2/3 innings in an 8-6 win against the Astros last Thursday. Paxton is now 2-1 with a 3.20 ERA and a 5/1 strikeout-to-walk ratio (K/BB) in three starts (19 2/3 innings) since returning from a back injury on July 30

The Mariners (http://oddsandnews.com/baseball/MLB/seattle-mariners/38) have scored 750 runs (15th in the majors), putting up 4.21 runs per game (21st), hitting .259 (11th) with 136 home runs (15th). Seattle ranks 15th with a 4.46 ERA, 12th with a 1.31 WHIP and 17th with 995 strikeouts. Their bullpen ranks 15th with a 3.98 ERA.

Nelson Cruz leads the Mariners with 30 home runs and is second on the team with 76 RBI, Ryon Healy has 22 home runs and 59 RBI and Mitch Haniger has 17 home runs and team-bests with 78 RBI and a .366 OBP.

Fiers makes second start for the Athletics

Mike Fiers (7-6, 3.40 ERA, 1.21 WHIP) allowed one earned run on four hits (one home run) and no walks with eight strikeouts across 5 1/3 innings to get a no-decision in a 3-2 win against the Dodgers last Wednesday.

The Athletics (http://oddsandnews.com/baseball/MLB/oakland-athletics/37) have scored 739 runs (17th in the majors), putting up 4.77 runs per game (8th), hitting .246 (24th) with 160 home runs (6th). Oakland ranks 23rd with a 4.67 ERA, 14th with a 1.36 WHIP and 24th with 910 strikeouts. Their bullpen ranks 6th with a 3.39 ERA. Khris Davis leads the Athletics with 34 home runs and 93 RBI and Matt Olson has 22 home runs and 56 RBI.

MLB Trends:

The Under is:

15-5-1 in Seattle's last 21 after scoring five runs or more in their previous game

11-5 in Paxton's last 16 starts against a team with a winning record

6-2 in Paxton's last eight starts overall

5-1 in Oakland's last six home games

7-2 in Oakland's last nine overall

5-1 in the last six meetings

5-2-1 in the last eight meetings in Oakland

Deciding to bet the total here is a little tough because both offenses have the ability to explode but James Paxton and Mike Fiers are top notch quality starters, particularly as of late. Paxton has a 3.40 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP in his last seven starts while Fiers has a 2.04 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP in his last seven starts.
