The Houston Astros open a three-game series with the Boston Red Sox that many consider a potential postseason preview. Gerrit Cole starts for the Astros while David Price takes the hill for the Red Sox.

Cole dominates the Angels



Gerrit Cole (13-5, 2.86 ERA, 1.03 WHIP) allowed two earned runs on six hits in his last outing. He also had three walks with nine strikeouts in a 4-2 win against the Angels last Sunday.

Cole ranks 2nd in the American League with 243 strikeouts, 5th with 176 1/3 innings pitched, 5th with a 1.03 WHIP, 6th with a 2.86 ERA and and 9th with 13 wins. 

The Astros have scored 695 runs (4th in the majors). They are putting up 4.96 runs per game (4th), hitting .256 (7th) with 181 home runs (10th).

Price returns after missing a start



David Price (14-6, 3.60 ERA, 1.16 WHIP) missed a start after taking a liner off his wrist in his August 29 start. He gave up three earned runs on five hits (one home run). Price had no walks with three strikeouts over just three innings to get a no-decision in a 14-6 win against the Marlins. 

The Red Sox have scored 766 runs (1st in the majors). They are putting up 5.43 runs per game (1st), hitting .268 (1st) with 182 home runs (8th).

David Price is pitching well but he will have his work cut out for him in his return against Houston. This is an Astros team that is firing on all cylinders, especially Alex Bregman. He is 9-for-18 with four doubles, four home runs and 10 RBI in his last five games.

Bregman is 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI against Price.
