The Aggies and Golden Gophers Look to Improve over Tournament



The Texas A&M Aggies and the Minnesota Golden Gophers will both be trying to pick up a win on Sunday when they battle at Vancouver Convention Centre. They are Participating in the 2018 Vancouver Showcase basketball tournament.

Texas A&M is coming off its second Sweet 16 appearance in three years but has managed just an unimpressive home win over Savannah State during a 1-2 start this season. The Aggies, who lost 94-71 at third-ranked Gonzaga on Thursday.

The Aggies, who lost three key starters in center Tyler Davis and forwards D.J. Hogg and Robert Williams, have also been hampered by injuries early. Guard Admon Gilder, who averaged 12.3 points and shot 39.3 percent from 3-point range last season, missing the first three games and out indefinitely with "health issues."

Highly touted transfer Wendell Mitchell has also been sidelined with tendinitis. Het could be back for the contest with the Golden Gophers, who come in off an impressive 78-69 home win over Utah.

The Aggies are 1-2 on the young season. The Aggies, who also lost at home to UC Irvine, 74-73, were tied 28-28 after 15 minutes before Gonzaga went on a 15-5 run. They took a 43-33 halftime lead and then opened the second half another 14-4 run to blow the game open.

Four players average in double figures led by sophomore swingman Savion Flagg. He is averaging 17.7 points and 8.7 rebounds. Sophomore point guard T.J. Starks (13.3), guard Jay Jay Chandler (10.3) and freshman forward John Walker III (10.3) also are scoring in double digits. Forward Christian Mekowulu, a grad transfer from Tennessee State, leads the squad in rebounds (9.3).

Texas A&M has connected on just 19-of-84 3-point attempts (22.6 percent).

The Golden Gophers are 2-0 on the season. The Gophers got a big game in the win over the Utes from freshman guard Gabe Kalscheur. He was 5-of-6 from 3-point range and led four Gophers in double figures with 19 points.

Senior forward Jordan Murphy, who led the nation with a school-record 24 double-doubles last season, recorded his second double-double of the season with 11 points and 17 rebounds and also had five assists.

Murphy has 937 career rebounds and needs 14 more to pass Kevin McHale for second place in school history.
