NFL Week 5 Preview & Free Pick- Philadelphia Eagles at Detroit Lions - Handicappers Hideaway

Detroit Lions Football

Eagles Going for 4-0 After Early Bye Week

The 3-0 Philadelphia Eagles return to action this Sunday from a bye
week as 2.5-point road favorites against the 1-3 Detroit Lions in a 1
p.m. (ET) start on FOX at Ford Field. BetAnySports has set the total line for the NFC tilt at 46.

The Philadelphia Eagles went into their bye week with a very
impressive 34-3 romp over in-state rival Pittsburgh. As four-point
underdogs at home, they played well over expectations. The total stayed
UNDER 46.5 points in that game. Total points in Philadelphia Eagles
games has now stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in all three of their
games. They also beat Cleveland as four-point home favorites and Chicago
on the road as three-point underdogs for the perfect start.
Philadelphia will head back on the road with a 4-1 record both
straight-up and against the spread in its last five road games.

The combination of rookie quarterback Carson Wentz and a shutdown
defense is largely responsible for the Eagles’ fast start. Wentz has yet
to throw an interception through his first three starts and he has
tossed five touchdown passes. The Philadelphia Eagle defense is allowing
the fewest points in the league. It is ranked sixth against the pass
and third against the run.

Lions Bad Defense and Struggling Offense without Megatron

Detroit fell to 1-3 on the year both SU and ATS with this past
Sunday’s 17-14 loss to Chicago as a three-point road favorite. The total
stayed UNDER 48 points on BetAnySports
closing line in that game. Detroit has now stayed UNDER in two of the
Lions’ last three games. They will return to Ford Field with a 3-7
record ATS in their last 10 home games. The total has gone OVER in six
of their last eight games at home.

The deep-rooted problems with this team on both sides of the ball
were clearly exposed in the loss to the Bears. Detroit’s offense has
struggled to move the ball this year. They have struggled Both on the
ground and through the air. The Lions defense surrendered over 400 total
yards to one of the worst offenses in the league. Matthew Strafford was
held to 197 yards passing. He was also picked off twice in Sunday’s
loss. The Lions are now ranked 22nd in the NFL in rushing with an average of 92.2 yards a game.

BetAnySports Prediction

I am looking for the Philadelphia Eagles to keep things rolling this Sunday with a SU win that easily covers BetAnySports
current 2.5-point spread. That overall gap in talent on both sides of
the ball is just too wide for Detroit to keep things close.

NFL Preseason Pick of the Week: Detroit Lions vs. Jacksonville Jaguars - Friday, Aug. 28 - Handicappers Hideaway

Betting on Jaguars Football

NFL Preseason Pick of the Week: Detroit Lions vs. Jacksonville Jaguars – Friday, Aug. 28

Current BetAnySports Line: Jaguars -2 and the total is sitting at 39 1/2

The Detroit Lions and the Jacksonville Jaguars kick-off Week 3 of the
NFL preseason this Friday night at EverBank Field in an 8 p.m. (ET)
start that will be broadcast nationally on CBS. Both teams come into
this game with a 1-1 record in the preseason both straight-up and
against the spread. BetAnySports has listed Jacksonville as a slight
one-point home favorite and the betting odds for the total have been set
at 42.5.

The Lions followed-up their 23-2 victory over the New York Jets as
four-point home favorites in Week 1 with a 21-17 loss to Washington this
past week as three-point road underdogs. The total stayed UNDER
BetAnySports’ closing line in each game. Over the first two games
starting quarterback Matthew Stafford has looked sharp in limited action
with 135 yards passing and one score while completing eight of 10
throws. Look for him to possibly play into the second half in Friday
night’s contest.

Detroit’s offense as a whole this preseason has averaged 215 yards
passing and another 119.5 yards a game on the ground. Zach Zenner leads
the team in rushing with 77 yards on 17 carries, but most of the
attention has focused on second-round pick Ameer Abdullah with 74 yards
rushing on just nine attempts for an average of 8.2 yards a run.

Jacksonville’s 1-1 start consists of a 23-21 victory against Pittsburgh
in Week 1 as slight one-point home favorites followed by last Friday’s
22-12 loss to the New York Giants as a 3.5-point underdog on the road.
The total went OVER the 37-point line against the Steelers and it stayed
UNDER the 40.5-point line against New York.

The expectation level for Blake Bortles remains high coming into his
second year as the Jaguars’ starting quarterback. Through limited
playing time in the first two games he has completed 19-of-31 attempts
for 216 yards. Jacksonville’s offense has struggled to move the ball
both through the air and on the ground with an average of 284.5 yards in
two games. Against the Giants, it only managed to gain 60 yards
rushing.

Both team’s starters should play well into the second half on Friday
night which clearly gives the edge in this matchup to Detroit. Last
season the Lions beat Jacksonville 13-12 in Week 3 of the preseason as
three-point favorites at home. This time around look for Detroit to win
SU by a much wider margin.

NFL Wildcard Round Betting Previews- Detroit Lions vs. New Orleans Saints

Point spread: New Orleans -10.5
Total line: 58.5
The Detroit Lions return to the postseason for the first time since 1999 to square-off against the New Orleans Saints this Saturday night in the Superdome in the Wildcard Round of the NFL playoffs. The game is slated to get underway at 8 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on NBC.
Detroit’s season has been filled with a number of ups and downs, but a 10-6 straight-up record was good enough to earn the sixth-seed in the playoffs in the NFC. The Lions were 7-7-2 against the spread this season overall and 3-3-2 ATS on the road. The total went ‘over’ in 10 of their 16 games and in seven of their eight games on the road.
The Lions only chance in this game will be for quarterback Matthew Stafford, wide receiver Calvin Johnson, and the rest of the offense to put on their fastest track shoes and try and match the Saints score for score all night long. This is not that far-fetched considering that Detroit finished the season ranked fifth in the NFL in total yards per game and fourth in scoring with an average of 29.6 points a game.
New Orleans cruised through the second half of the regular season with eight victories both SU and ATS in eight games. It finished the year 13-3 SU and a very profitable 12-4 ATS. The Saints were unbeatable in the friendly confines of the Superdome this season with a perfect 8-0 record SU and ATS. The total went 9-7 overall and 5-3 at home.
Drew Brees comes into this game arguably playing the best football in his illustrious 11-year NFL career. He broke Dan Marino’s single-season passing record with 5,476 yards while throwing 46 touchdowns and completing an amazing 71.2 percent of his passes. He actually completed 80 percent of his throws in two of his last three games.
Detroit is 0-3-1 ATS in its last four road games and 1-4-1 ATS in its last six games overall. The total has gone ‘over’ in five of its last seven games as road underdogs.
New Orleans is 11-1 ATS in its last 12 home games and 7-0 ATS in its last seven games against the NFC. The total has gone ‘over’ in six of their last eight games in the postseason.
Head-to-head, the Saints have won the last three games both SU and ATS including a 31-17 rout in Week 13 as nine-point home favorites. The total stayed ‘under’ the 55-point line. The Lions should be able to put some points on the board against a less-than-stout Saints’ defense, but it will not be nearly as many points as New Orleans will pin on them.
The Pick: New Orleans 34 Detroit 20

NFL Odds Favor Red-Hot Saints Against Lions in Wild Card Weekend

For the first time this century the Detroit Lions are an NFL playoff team, but the postseason dream may not last long. This weekend the NFC North wild card will hit the road against the New Orleans Saints.

Weigh in on Bovada’s NFL betting line today.

With a 10-6 mark the Lions have strung together their best season since 1995, but waiting for them down south is a Drew Brees-led Saints team hungry to make up for last season’s disappointing early exit to the Seattle Seahawks.

According to Bovada’s NFL money lines, New Orleans is favored heavily with a -11 point spread and rightfully so. Having thrown a record-setting 5,476 yards in the regular season, it’s hard to imagine anyone slowing down Brees and his receivers in the biggest game of the year.

But just because the football odds lean toward the hometown Saints, that doesn’t mean Detroit isn’t an intriguing option for fans looking to take a chance. The Lions have won four straight games heading into the postseason and will look to continue to ride the wave momentum that they’ve ridden since their stellar start to the season in September.

Think you know how the first week of playoffs will unfold?

NFL Odds Board Pits Wild Card Hopefuls Head-to-Head in Week 16

A three-game win streak has put the San Diego Chargers back in the conversation for an AFC wild card berth, but their season isn't about to get any easier in Week 16. This Saturday - on Christmas Eve, no less - San Diego will square off on the NFL odds board against an equally-postseason hungry Detroit Lions team from the NFC.

Both Detroit and San Diego remain eligible candidates on Bovada's NFL futures board, but only one team can walk away as Super Bowl champions. To even get there, they'll have to slug out a holiday victory that proves they deserve it.

The 9-5 Lions have emerged as a force to be reckoned with in the NFC North, but if they want to live up to the five-game win streak that put them back on the map this fall, they'll have to come through in the final hour of the season.

Standing between the Chargers and a playoff berth remain a number of threats from the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets to the Tennessee Titans and Oakland Raiders. Since only one spot remains, every game and every winnable opportunity counts in the final stretch of the season.
