SEC Football Preview: Georgia is a 4.5-point dawg to Tennessee at home - Handicappers Hideaway

Georgia Bulldogs Football

SEC Football Preview: Georgia is a 4.5-point dawg to Tennessee at home

A great SEC Football game  between the Tennessee Volunteers and the
Georgia Bulldogs will tee off on Saturday at Sanford Stadium in Athens,
GA. This should be a good game as most of these contests usually are.
Both teams have scored over 30 points in the last 4 meetings and today
could see it happen again.

Georgia is coming off a terrible perfomance in Super-Frosh, Jacob
Eason’s, first road game in a really hostile environmet.  Ole Miss took
advantage of his youth and many UGA mistakes and dropped passes.
Tennessee is going for it’s 1oth straight win and a resurgence back into
national prominence.

Oddsmakers currently have the Volunteers listed as 4½-point favorites versus the Bulldogs, while the game’s total is sitting at 53.

Georgia was a 45-14 loser in its last game on the road against the
Ole Miss Rebels. They failed to cover the +7-point spread as underdogs,
while the total score of 59 sent UNDER bettors to the payout window.

In their last action, Tennessee was a 38-28 winner at home against
the Florida Gators. They covered the -5-point spread as favorites, while
the combined score (66) was profitable news for OVER bettors.

No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs (0-0) vs. No. 8 Clemson Tigers (0-0) Preview

No. 5 Georgia and No. 8 Clemson square off in the marquee game of the week. Aaron Murray came five yards shy of leading Georgia to the BCS Championship Game as a junior last season before time ran out against eventual national champion Alabama. Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd enjoyed a record-setting junior campaign and joins Murray as a preseason candidate to take home the Heisman Trophy.

Murray, whose 95 touchdown passes are more than any active FBS player, was named the preseason SEC player of the year despite the presence of Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, the reigning Heisman winner while Boyd threw for 3,896 yards and 36 touchdowns last season en route to winning ACC player of the year honors. In addition to the top-tier quarterbacks, both teams possess electrifying complementary players such as Georgia running back Todd Gurley and Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins.

Georgia will begin their season in daunting fashion, facing No. 8 Clemson, No. 7 South Carolina and No. 13 LSU in three of their first four games. The tough schedule will pose an early challenge for their top running backs, Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall, who combined for 2,144 yards and 25 touchdowns as true freshmen last year. Defensively, head coach Mark Richt must find a way to replace seven starters, including first round picks Jarvis Jones and Alec Ogeltree.

Clemson is coming off their best season since winning the 1981 National Championship with a 12-0 record. Only five teams averaged more than Clemson's 41.0 points per game last season, but it won't be easy to replace running back Andre Ellington (1,081 yards, eight touchdowns) and wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins (1,405 yards, 18 touchdowns). The Tigers also have to find a way to shore up their pass defense, which ranked 71st nationally last season and will face an immediate test against Aaron Murray and Georgia.

Georgia Bulldogs vs. No.1 Kentucky Wildcats

Pointspread: Kentucky -19

Total Line: 128

The Georgia Bulldogs will try and pull-off a second-straight upset of a ranked team this Thursday night in a SEC match up against the No.1 ranked Kentucky Wildcats. The tip-off from Rupp Arena is slated for 9 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.

Georgia comes into this game fresh-off Saturday's stunning 76-62 victory over No.13 Florida as a 7.5-point home underdog. This shocker aside, the Bulldogs? overall body of work this season has been less than impressive with a 13-15 straight-up record overall and a 4-10 SU record in the conference. They are 11-13 against the spread and 6-6 ATS on the road. The total has stayed "under" in seven of the 12 road games.

Beating Florida at home is one thing, but going on the road against the No.1 team in the nation with an offense that is averaging 61.5 points a game and shooting just 39.7 percent from the floor is a whole other story. Georgia's goal on Thursday night should be to keep this a 10-point game late into the second half.

Kentucky has already clinched the SEC regular season title and has this game and a season-ending showdown with Florida left on the slate before the start of next week's conference tournament. The Wildcats are an impressive 28-1 SU overall and a perfect 18-0 SU at home, but the caution flag has to go up in light of a 10-17-1 overall record ATS and a dismal 4-12-1 record ATS at home.

On paper, this game should be over at the half with the Wildcats averaging 77.8 points and 39.2 rebounds a game while shooting 48.8 percent from the field. The question is, how motivated will Kentucky be playing a team it already beat 57-44 in late January as a 12-point road favorite?

Georgia is 4-13 ATS in its last 17 games following a SU win and the total has stayed "under" in six of its last eight games following a SU win.

Kentucky is 2-5 ATS in its last seven games against a team with a losing record and 3-12-1 ATS in its last 16 games following an ATS loss. The total has stayed ?under? in five of its last seven Thursday games.

The road team in this series is 18-6 ATS in the last 24 meetings and the Bulldogs are 5-0 ATS in their last five trips to Rupp Arena. The total stayed "under" the 130.5-point line the last time they met but had gone "over" in four of the previous five meetings.

Stick with the recent trends in this series and the Wildcats inability to cover huge spreads at home, as Georgia keeps things close enough to cover on the road.

The Pick: Kentucky 68 Georgia 57

NCAA Football Futures – Trojans Buckeyes at top of BCS pile

August 28, 2008

USC fell short of the BCS title game thanks to an upset to lowly Stanford, while Ohio State have been trounced in the past two BCS title games by teams from the SEC (Florida and LSU), but that has not stopped oddsmakers from putting the Trojans and Buckeyes at the top of the NCAA football odds heap. However, they will face stiff competition from the likes of Oklahoma and preseason No.1 Georgia.

The Trojans have a tough schedule, playing in the Pac-10, but their most difficult opponents, Ohio State and Arizona State, visit the Rose Bowl. USC received a boost when it was announced that injured quarterback Mark Sanchez would be ready for the start of the season, but the Trojans still have an offensive line with four new starters. Look for the defense, which welcomes back seven starters led by linebacker Rey Maualuga, to carry the team early in the season as USC was second only to Ohio State in total defense last season. USC has NCAA football odds of +350.

The Buckeyes are rated at +400, and they are an experienced bunch with 20 returning starters, including nine from last year’s defense which was the best in the nation. Running back Chris Wells is a legitimate Heisman candidate, and a lot of people will also be interested to see how highly-touted freshman quarterback Terrelle Pryor fits into the Buckeyes’ gameplan. Their trip to USC on Septemer 13th will have huge national implications.

Oklahoma comes in at at +500, and a midseason back-to-back against Texas and Kansas will show them if they are truly the class of the Big 12. Quarterback Sam Bradford returns from a brilliant freshman with seven other starters, but with only five starters back on defense, the Sooners could be in line for some shootouts.

Georgia may have the toughest schedule in the country, but that comes with playing in the brutal SEC. The Bulldogs go to South Carolina and Arizona in the first four weeks of the season, then at LSU, Florida and at Auburn, just to name a few. It is a good thing they have a Heisman candidate in sophomore running back Knowshon Moreno, a confident quarterback in Matt Stafford and nine returning starters on defense. It could be smart to grab the Bulldogs at NCAA football odds of +500.
