UFC 133 Betting Preview at Bodog

UFC 133 Betting Preview at Bodog

By Richard Gardner

It's a great month for mixed martial arts as the UFC stages two cards in August, starting with this Saturday's UFC 133 at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia? next is UFC 134 at the end of the month in Rio de Janeiro.

The main event on Saturday features a light heavyweight bout between Rashad Evans and former champion Tito Ortiz. It was originally supposed to be Phil Davis against Evans but Davis had to pull out injured. Then reportedly both Ortiz and Lyoto Machida turned down the chance to replace Evans before Ortiz had a change of mind. You have to give him credit as Ortiz will be fighting for the second time in a little more than a month. On July 2 at UFC 132, Ortiz (16-8-1) took a first-round submission win over Ryan Bader, a result that saved the 36-year-old's job. Leading up to the fight, UFC president Dana White made it clear Ortiz needed a win to continue his UFC career, having dropped four of his last five heading into that bout.

Evans (15-1-1), a former light heavyweight champion himself, hasn't fought since earning a unanimous decision win over Quinton Jackson in May 2010 at UFC 114. Crowned the No. 1 contender following that fight, Evans was scheduled to face then-champion Mauricio Rua at UFC 128 last March but Rua required knee surgery. He was then set to face current champ Jon Jones, but that fight was scrapped due to an injury to Jones' thumb.

This bout will be a rematch of a controversial draw between the two at UFC 73 in July 2007. Ortiz was penalized for grabbing the fence in the fight, which ultimately prevented him from taking a decision. Since the judges awarded Ortiz two of the three rounds, the deduction resulted in scores of 28-28 across the board. Thus Ortiz obviously would have won without the deduction.

"Tito's gonna try and take me down, try some ground and pound. That was his game plan in the first fight, and I'll think he'll try that again, Evans said "I'm that much faster than him, as long I keep moving at all times and use my speed, he'll be making a mistake stepping into the cage with me. I'm confident no matter where the fight goes. ? There's no doubt in my mind I'll defeat Tito Ortiz. That I know for sure.?

Evans opened as the -400 favorite at Bodog with Ortiz at +300 and those numbers haven?t changed. Ortiz has taken about 58 percent of the action thus far. Evans is 2-0 in his UFC career as the betting favorite while Ortiz is 1-3 as the betting underdog. When the last bout ended in a draw, the odds closed at Evans -105 and Ortiz at -125.

White has said a victory for Evans means a title shot against the winner of the bout between Jones and Jackson at UFC 135 in late September and even hinted the same could be true for Ortiz.

Saturday's co-featured bout pits Vitor Belfort against Yoshihiro Akiyama in a middleweight contest. Belfort (19-9) enters the fight coming off of a first-round knockout loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 126 in early February. Prior to that he had won five fights in a row. Akiyama (13-3) is coming off back-to-back losses for the first time in his career and fighting for his UFC survival. He last fought Michael Bisping at UFC 120 last October.

The betting on this bout has been very lopsided. Belfort opened at -275 but is now at -285 because he has taken more than 93 percent of the action. Akiyama moved from +215 to +225. Belfort is 1-0 as the betting favorite while Akiyama is 1-1 as the betting underdog.

Streaking Tiger-Cats Hit the Road Against Calgary

Lost in the shuffle of Edmonton's undefeated 2011 season and Montreal's bid for a third-straight Grey Cup title, there have been two CFL clubs that have quietly put their work in early this year and seen it pay off.

This Saturday the 3-2 Calgary Stampeders will host the 3-2 Hamilton Tiger-Cats as each looks to improve their position in their respective division coming off of significant Week 5 victories.

Have an idea of how the match up will unfold? Bet on the CFL with Bodog

For the hometown Stampeders it will be a third opportunity to win their first home game of 2011. Despite their above .500 record, is 3-0 on the road and winless at McMahon Stadium, a surprising trend for the team that finished with the top record in the CFL in 2010.

After struggling early, in Week 5 the Stampeders took down the reigning Grey Cup runner up Saskatchewan Roughriders. Will this Saturday serve as the next stepping stone for the franchise hungry to climb back into contention?

Coming off a victory over the Montreal Alouettes the Tiger-Cats are riding high and will be no easy opponent. After starting the season in a 0-2 hole, Hamilton has knocked off three straight with no signs of slowing down.

Is the momentum enough to vault them into the top of the East Division standings? They currently have 5/1 odds of winning the Grey Cup. The once-favored Stampeders currently sit third in the CFL with 7/2 odds.

NL Central-Leading Milwaukee Brewers take on Houston Astros

Last weekend, the Milwaukee Brewers played host to the Houston Astros and unceremoniously swept them out of town. The rematch begins Friday when the Brew Crew travel to Texas for a three-game series starting Friday night.

Last Saturday, Yovani Gallardo won his 12th game of the season when his Brewers defeated J.A. Happ 6-2. Those two take the hill again on Friday. Other pitching matchups include Chris Narveson against Brett Myers on Saturday and Zack Greinke against Bud Norris on Sunday.

The Brewers are currently first in a tight NL Central race with a 62-50 record and have 14/1 odds of winning the World Series. The Astros are about as out of it as they can be, 24.5 games behind, the greatest gap in the majors.

Milwaukee is trying to make this the year they get that first World Series win. Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun have gone wild, combining for 52 home runs and 152 RBIs at this point. Staying that hot will be key as they try to get to the postseason for just the second time since 2008.

Odds Point to Brewers, But Hard-Fought NL Central On the Line

The National League Central is shaping up to be one of the hardest fought divisions in all of baseball down the stretch and this week is a perfect example. Think you know baseball? Prove it.

Starting Monday the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers will host the St. Louis Cardinals in a three-game set at Miller Park, individual game MLB odds are available in Bodog?s online sportsbook, but so are pennant and World Series futures for those thinking down the road.

It?s never too early to start talking playoff pictures, and with the wild card spot in the NL currently held comfortably by the Atlanta Braves, the race for the NL Central is only more important.

Though they?ll have the advantage of being the home team in the series, the Brewers will need to be at the top of their games if they hope to put a dent in St. Louis? record. With the Pittsburgh Pirates nipping at their heels in the division, every win is of utmost importance.

According to Bodog, the Brewers have the advantage in the big picture. With 14/1 odds of winning the World Series they top all of their NL Central counterparts in terms of MLB futures. The Cardinals, sit close behind at 22/1.

So far this season the Brewers have seen brilliant seasons from Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks, but none of that will matter if they can?t continue their torrid pace in the final few months.

Bodog is YOUR home for all the best baseball betting options.
