NBA on ABC: Cavs Host the Rockets

Houston Rockets Basketball

Rockets and Cavs on ABC in Prime-time

The Houston Rockets and the Cleveland Cavaliers meet in prime-time on Saturday at Quicken Loans Arena. The nationally televised game will tip-off at 8:30 pm EST and will be on ABC.

Oddsmakers have Houston as 3-point favorites. The total is at 231.

The Houston Rockets are rolling. They are well on the way to molding themselves into a deep, explosive team. They may be the only team capable of challenging the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference finals.

The Cleveland Cavaliers' are in disarray. Their best player is trying to beat back rumors that he may join the Warriors this summer. LeBron James dismissed the reports as "nonsense". He was disputing a report from ESPN that he would "take" a meeting with the Warriors in free agency if they cleared the cap space to give him a max contract.

James can become a free agent if he declines his $35.6 million contract option with the Cavaliers.

Cavaliers Trying to Keep Pace With Boston

Cleveland won its last outing, a 91-89 result against the Miami Heat on January 31. The Cavaliers failed to cover in that game as a -2.5-point favorite, while the 180 combined points took the game UNDER the total.

Cleveland was six games in back of Boston in the East when play began Friday.

Kevin Love is out eight weeks with a broken bone in his left hand.

Rockets Look for Sweep of Cavliers

Last time out for Houston, they were a 102-91 winner as they battled the San Antonio Spurs on the road. The Rockets covered in the match as a -2.5-point favorite, while 193 combined points moved the game UNDER for totals bettors.

The Rockets beat Cleveland 117-113 on Nov. 7. Chris Paul didn't play in that game for Houston and Kevin Love was out there for the Cavs. Paul is healthy. He will be alongside James Harden against a team that struggles to guard the perimeter.

The Rocket trail the Warriors by 2.5 games in the West. They won their third straight and seventh out of the last eight when they beat San Antonio Thursday.

Harden has scored 88 points in his last two games. This is including his 60-point outburst in a triple-double against Orlando. Harden posted 35 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds last time out against the Cavs.

Virginia Cavaliers Have Nations Best Defense

The 2nd-ranked Virginia Cavaliers and the Syracuse Orange will battle on Saturday when they meet at Carrier Dome. The ACC Network will provide television coverage. Tip-off is set for 4 pm EST.

Oddsmakers opened the Cavaliers as -7-point favorites versus the Orange, while the game's total opened at 112. Virginia is now a 5.5-point favorite and the total has edged up to 114.

The fans will likely not be entertained by an up-tempo, high-scoring track meet type of game. Defense will be theme in front of an expected crowd of more than 26,000 at the Carrier Dome. It will be Syracuse's biggest crown of the season.

Virginia has the best defensive team in the nation. They are allowing only 52.7 points per game. Syracuse is known for its active 2-3 zone defense. The Orange rank No. 10 in the nation. They are allowing 62.8 points per game.

In the first meeting on Jan. 9 at Virginia, the Cavaliers won 69-61. The Cavs shot only 38.3 percent from the field and Syracuse made 37.7 percent. The Orange made 28.6 percent of its 3-point shots, while the Cavaliers shot just 33.3 percent from beyond the arc.

Syracuse Look to start Win Streak Versus Virginia Cavaliers

Syracuse was a 55-51 loser in their most recent outing on the road against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. They failed to cover the PK-point spread.

Syracuse had a three-game winning streak snapped against Georgia Tech on Wednesday. Forward Tyus Battle had 19 points and a career-high nine rebounds. The Orange shot a season-low 30 percent from the field.

Battle and guard Frank Howard combined to make only 8 of 34 shots from the field. The killer included being only 4 of 15 from 3-point range.

Great Defense is no Stranger to the Virginia Cavaliers

Virginia was a 74-64 winner in their most recent outing at home against the Louisville Cardinals. They earned a push of the -10-point spread as favorites.

Virginia coach Tony Bennett has coached four teams that have led the nation in scoring defense. The Cavaliers are in the midst of a 13-game winning streak. During the streak they have held eight opponents below 50 points this season.

He has used the same starting lineup of Ty Jerome, guard Kyle Guy, guard Devon Hall, forward Isaiah Wilkins and center Jack Salt in all 22 games.

The Cavaliers are off to their best start in the ACC since 1980. They were 12-0 in Ralph Sampson's sophomore season.

Texas Tech Travels to Battle TCU

Texas Tech Athletics

Texas Tech and TCU High Powered Offenses Collide

The 10th-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders and the TCU Horned Frogs meet on Saturday at Schollmaier Arena. Tip-off is set for 2 pm EST and ESPNU will have the Telecast.

Oddsmakers opened the Horned Frogs as -3.5-point favorites versus the Red Raiders, while the game's total opened at 146. The line has held steady.

TCU and No. 10 Texas Tech have two of the best offenses in the Big 12 Conference, and two of the best in the nation. Defense may be the part of the game that decides things Saturday afternoon.  Something has to give with these two teams and it may be who creates the most turnovers and has the most stops.

TCU Heads Home With Balanced Offensive Attack

In their last action, TCU was a 79-66 winner on the road against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. They covered the -1-point spread as favorites.

TCU heads home after beating Oklahoma State behind a balanced attack led by Alex Robinson's and Kenrich Williams' 13 points each.

Desmond Bane and Kouat Noi chipped in 12 points each. Vladmir Brodziansky scored 10 points for the Horned Frogs. TCU out-shot Oklahoma State 55.6 percent-41.8 percent while controlling the boards with a 37-26 rebounding advantage.

It's only the second time that the Horned Frogs have won in Stillwater. The first since 1925. TCU has beaten Oklahoma State only three times since joining the Big 12 in 2013.

TCU's defensive intensity and execution was crucial in the win. It played big in a game that was dead-even statistically after the first half.

The Horned Frogs' offense, with their balanced attack, is good enough to make them one of the best teams in the loaded Big 12. They hope to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.

Texas Tech Keeps Surviving Close Calls

Last time out for Texas Tech, they were a 73-71 winner in overtime as they battled the Texas Longhorns at home. They failed to cover in the match as a -8-point favorite.

The Red Raiders got a career-high 38 points from Keenan Evans. He hit the game-winning step-back jumper with one second remaining on the clock.

Evans was the only Red Raider who scored in double figures. He had double the points of Texas Tech's four other starters combined. Norense Odiase snatched 11 rebounds.

Evans is the first Texas Tech player to notch back-to-back 30-point games since Andre Emmett. He accomplished the feat on Dec. 18 and Dec. 21, 2002.

Evans scored 21 of his points during the second half and overtime. The 38 points were the most by a Texas Tech player since Mike Singletary. He tallied 43 points against Texas A&M on March 11, 2009 in the Big 12 Championship game.

It was the third in row for Texas Tech. The Red Raiders improved their winning streak in designated home games to 14-0 this season.

In their second game following the All-Star break, the Jets and Golden Knights are looking to pick up where they left off. Led by likely Hart Trophy candidate, Blake Wheeler (14 goals, 42 assists), the Jets have been as solid as any team in the league this season.

The Jets have a strong balance on offense and defense. Their high-scoring offense ranks fifth in the NHL with 3.24 goals scored per game. The Jets stingy defense  sits seventh by allowing just 2.65 goals per game. Winnipeg has amassed an impressive +0.59 goal differential through 51 games.

At the opposite end of the ice is the surprise team of the NHL season. Vegas has captured the attention of hockey fans across the nation. This group of castaway players has put together the second-best record in the entire league.

Vegas has been the model of consistency this season. They have nine players tallying at more than 20 points. The team is ranking in the top six in the league in both goals for (3.39) and goals allowed (2.61). This is truly a battle between complete teams.
