UCONN Hosts Central Florida (21) to Open Season

Central Florida Black Knights

Can Central Florida Do it Again?

The Central Florida Knights and the UCONN Huskies will meet at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field. This Thursday Night matchup will kick off the season for both teams. ESPNU has the kickoff at 7 pm.

Oddsmakers opened the Knights as -16.5-point favorites versus the Huskies, while the game's total opened at 69.5. The line is now Central Florida as 24-point favorites. The total is now 70.

Central Florida will be hard-pressed to match its magical undefeated 2017 season. The Knights begin a new campaign in the American Athletic Conference expecting to make noise again. After losing Head Coach Scott Frost it will be tough.

Former Missouri offensive coordinator Josh Heupel takes over as coach.

The Black Knights have won three of the five previous meetings. They had a 49-24 triumph last year in Orlando, Fla.

UCONN Looks to Improve in 2018

Coach Randy Edsall begins the second season of his second stint with the Huskies. He needs to replace nine starters on defense. He has told reporters this freshman class may be the best he has ever had at UConn.

The Huskies' offense is more seasoned with senior David Pindell taking over full time at quarterback. He passed for more than 200 yards in the last three games of 2017, including 201 against UCF.

Edsall told reporters of Pindell: "He seems a lot faster, looks a lot faster than what he was a year (ago). Not a guy that talks a lot, but the kid is really respected, and he's a hard worker."

The Huskies return their top rusher in sophomore Kevin Mensah. He had 561 yards and four TDs. Redshirt freshman Zavier Scott from Texas was listed as the starter on this week's depth chart.

Senior Hergy Mayala had 43 catches, 615 yards, and seven TDs in 2017. He keys the receiving corps that includes five players (also tight end Aaron McLean and wideouts Keyion Dixon, Quayvon Skanes and Tyraiq Beals) who registered at least 30 receptions last season.

Central Florida Has New Coach, but Plenty of Talent

Missouri finished in the top 10 in the nation for total offense last year under Heupel. Heupel is a former Oklahoma quarterback that excelled at his position. McKenzie Milton should prosper despite losing his top receiver Tre'Quan Smith to the NFL. It will be tough to match a 13-0 season.

Junior All-Conference center Jordan Johnson anchors the offensive line for the Knights. They return sophomore Otis Anderson and junior Adrian Killins Jr., who had 790 rushing yards, at running back.  Junior receiver Dredrick Snelson is back. He had 46 catches, 695 yards, and eight TDs.

New defensive coordinator Randy Shannon must replace some key people. Senior linebacker Pat Jasinski had 104 tackles. Senior safety Kyle Gibson had four interceptions. They are expected to lead Shannon's defense.

Junior quarterback McKenzie Milton, who was eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting last year, leads the way for 23rd-ranked UCF and

Prediction: UCF 42, UCONN 21

Odds: Dodgers -140-moneyline favorites. The total is 7.5 -110.

The Arizona Diamondbacks clash with the Los Angeles Dodgers in a four-game series with National League West implications. The Diamondbacks have a one-game lead in the division over the Dodgers, who have won five straight.

Ray is winless since June 27

Robbie Ray (3-2, 4.73 ERA, 1.46 WHIP) allowed one earned run on five hits (one home run). He had four walks with seven strikeouts over five innings to get a no-decision in a 4-3 loss against the Mariners last Saturday.

Ray just couldn't find the strike zone. Throwing only 56 of his 104 pitches for strikes was a problem. He has issued at least four walks in four of his last five starts. The left-hander is winless in his last 10 starts and he's posted a 4.34 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP in his last seven appearances.

The Diamondbacks have scored 590 runs (17th in the majors). They are putting up 4.44 runs per game (17th), hitting .239 (27th) with 145 home runs (19th).

Arizona ranks 3rd with a 3.54 ERA, 5th with a 1.21 WHIP and 7th with 1179 strikeouts.

Their bullpen ranks 3rd with a 3.12 ERA.

Paul Goldschmidt leads the Diamondbacks with 30 home runs, 76 RBI, a .395 OBP and 144 hits.

David Peralta has 25 home runs, 71 RBI and a team-best .303 batting average.

Hill dominates the Padres

Rich Hill (6-4, 3.50 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) threw six scoreless innings in Friday's 11-1 win against the Padres. He surrendered just two hits and a walk with eight strikeouts. Hill is pitching well as of late, going 2-0 with a 2.76 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP in his last five starts.

The Dodgers have scored 634 runs (7th in the majors). They are putting up 4.77 runs per game (6th), hitting .245 (17th) with 186 home runs (2nd).

Los Angeles ranks 2nd with a 3.44 ERA, 2nd with a 1.17 WHIP and 3rd with 1276 strikeouts.

Their bullpen ranks 13th with a 3.92 ERA. Max Muncy leads the Dodgers with 30 home runs.

Yasmani Grandal has 22 home runs and 60 RBI and Cody Bellinger has 21 home runs, 63 RBI and a team-best 123 hits.

1-7 in Ray's last eight starts

1-5 in Ray's last six starts with four days of rest

0-5 in Ray's last five starts following a team loss in their previous game

0-5 in Ray's last five starts against a team with a winning record

 The Los Angeles Dodgers are:

13-3 in Hill's last 16 starts after allowing two runs or less in their previous game

5-1 in Hill's last six starts with five days of rest

5-2 in Hill's last seven starts

4-0 in Hill's last four starts during game 1 of a series

The Diamondbacks have scored just three runs in their last three games. Getting the Dodgers and 1.5 runs is a strong play.

Free NFLX Week 4 Pick- Cleveland Browns at Detroit Lions

Detroit Lions

Free NFL Preseason Week 4 Pick- Cleveland at Detroit

The Cleveland Browns are a slight 2.5 road favorite against the Detroit Lions in a slated 7 p.m. start at Ford Field. The final round of NFL preseason games is set for this tonight. The Browns and Lions are one of the NFL Networks featured games.

BetAnySports has set the total line for this game at 35.5 points.

Last year’s Cleveland was a perfect 4-0 through the preseason. That was both straight-up and against the spread. They followed that up with 16 losses in the regular season. With Pittsburgh coming to town on opening day, ending that losing streak may have to wait.

In the meantime, the Browns will try and finish this preseason on a winning note. They have gone 2-1 SU and ATS in their first three games. The total stayed UNDER in all three contests with the offense averaging just 14.0 points per game.

The big story in Cleveland this preseason has been the play of Baker Mayfield at quarterback. He went first overall in this year’s draft. The results have been mixed. If left the door open for veteran Tyrod Taylor as the team’s starter when the regular season does get underway.

Neither player had much success last Thursday in the Browns’ 5-0 grinder against Philadelphia. The Browns covered as three-point home favorites.

Lions Will be Getting Ready for Tough NFC North

The Lions should have their hands full in the NFC North with Green Bay and Minnesota. They posted a 9-7 SU record in 2017. They are off to a 1-2 start both SU and ATS this preseason. This is after getting past Tampa Bay 33-30 in Week 3.

Detroit closed that game as a 2.5-point road underdog with BetAnySports. The total went well OVER the 43-point line. Going back to last season, the Lions beat the Browns 38-24 in mid-November as 10.5-point favorites at home.

Matthew Stafford will most likely carry the clipboard on Thursday night. This will give backup Matt Cassel a few more reps running the Lions’ offense. Stafford completed nine of his 18 passing attempts against Tampa Bay for 113 yards. It was his first extended action in the preseason.

Cassel added another 60 yards and one touchdown through the air in that game. The biggest takeaway from that game was veteran running back LeGarrette Blount rushing for 45 yards on 11 carries.

With most of the starters sitting this one out, betting on the outcome all comes down to team depth. That gives the clear betting edge to the Lions only giving up 2.5 points at home.

The Rangers have scored 630 runs (8th in the majors). They are putting up 4.74 runs per game (9th), hitting .244 (22nd) with 159 home runs (13th).

Texas ranks 28th with a 4.97 ERA, 25th with a 1.40 WHIP and 30th with 929 strikeouts.

Their bullpen ranks 18th with a 4.14 ERA.

Joey Gallo leads the Rangers with 34 home runs and 78 RBI.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are:

2-5 in Wood's last seven starts

1-4 in Wood's last five starts during game 2 of a series

0-4 in Wood's last four starts against American League West opponents

The Texas Rangers are:

9-4 in their last 13 Wednesday games

4-0 in Minor's last four starts

5-2 in Minor's last seven starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance

Alex Wood has pitched well as of late but he's had some bad luck. Mike Minor has been one of the few bright spots for the Rangers this season. He is arguably their best pitcher.

Minor is 4-0 with a 2.60 ERA and an 0.74 WHIP in his last four starts and we are getting him at plus money here. You just can't pass on this much value.

Shaky Yankees Meet Orioles at Camden Yards

Yankees Baseball

Yankees Going for Sweep to Stay in AL East Race

The second half of the 2018 regular season hasn’t been a smooth one for the New York Yankees (82-47, + 1.52 betting units). But they can solidify their playoff spot with a sweep of the last-place Baltimore Orioles (37-93, -45.72 units).

ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball is the setting  and first pitch at Oriole Park is 8:05 PM ET.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Luis Severino (16-6, 3.28 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Dylan Bundy (7-12, 5.31).

Odds: The Yankees are -250-moneyline favorites. The total is sitting at 8.5 -110.

New York (82-47) swept a doubleheader from the major league-worst Orioles on Saturday. It was by a combined 15-4 to pull within seven games of division rival Boston atop the AL East.

Luis Severino (3.28 ERA) gets the nod for the Yankees. He tries to recapture his form from the first half of the season. Severino has just one quality start in his last six outings.

New York is 2-4 during this slump. The team has falling to 20-6 on the season (plus-6.22 units) when their ace takes the mound. Unfortunately for Severino and the Yankees, closer Aroldis Chapman (2.11 ERA) has been put on the 10-day disabled list with left knee tendinitis.

The tanking Orioles respond with Dylan Bundy (5.31 ERA). He is down 8.62 units this year on a team record of 8-16 (Over 13-9). Bundy has given up seven earned runs in each of his last three starts.

The last time he faced the Yankees was on July 11. The Yankees won 9-0 as –183 home favorites, with the third-year starter lasting just four innings.
