Pelicans Host Thunder Before All-Star Break

New Orleans Pelicans Basketball

Westbrook Looks to Extend Triple-Double Record Tonight

The Oklahoma City Thunder battle the New Orleans Pelicans at Smoothie King Center. Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook looks to extend his record streak of triple-doubles to 11 tonight. Westbrook had 21 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists in Monday's 120-111 home win over the Portland Trail Blazers. He broke the legendary Wilt Chamberlain's record of nine straight triple-doubles that was set in 1968.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT, FS Oklahoma LINE: Thunder -4.5; O/U: 238.5.

Westbrook's latest stellar outing, was his 23rd triple-double of the campaign. It led streaking Oklahoma City to its 11th win in the past 12 games. The Pelicans are badly unraveling with 10 losses in the past 14 games. Disgruntled star Anthony Davis had three points on 1-of-9 shooting in a 118-88 home loss to the Orlando Magic on Tuesday.

This, That, and a Dart Throw

The Thunder have improved to 37-19 on the season. Forward Paul George got into the triple-double act with the third of his career. He poured in 47 points and added 12 rebounds and 10 assists against Portland. George decided not to leave as a free agent after last season and he and Westbrook are meshing on the court and off in their second season as teammates.

The Pelicans are 25-33 on the season. Guard Jrue Holiday termed the 30-point home loss as "definitely embarrassing" as the atmosphere around the team remains surly after Davis requested a trade. Once he wasn't dealt prior to last Thursday's deadline, it has lingered and caused issues. Davis played only 24 minutes against the Magic in his third game since he wasn't moved. The Pelicans have to find a way to put this behind them.

PREDICTION: Thunder 127, Pelicans 105

Nashville Predators Host Montreal Canadiens Thursday Night

Nashville Predators

Defense Will be a Priority With Preds and Habs

Two highly defensive squads take the ice tonight in a battle of East vs. West. With Pekka Rinne between the pipes, Nashville Predators (33-21-5) has allowed the fourth-fewest goals in the league (2.59). They will take on the Montreal Canadiens, who’ve won three of their last four games (31-18-7) thanks to the stellar play of goaltender Carey Price.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TSN2, RDS (Montreal), FS Tennessee (Nashville); LINE: Predators -163; O/U: 5.5 Over -107.

The last time Montreal faced Nashville was January 5 at the Bell Centre, and the Habs were gouged 4-1. Following Price’s resurgence as an elite ‘tender" in the league, Montreal has elevated their defensive play. Now they sit just four points back of the second-place Toronto Maple Leafs in the Atlantic Division. The Predators find themselves mired in a three-game mini skid as they enter Thursday’s contest. They dropped two games to the St. Louis Blues and lost 3-2 to the Detroit Red Wings Tuesday night. Those are hardly elite squads in the NHL. It’ll be interesting to see how the Preds bounce back against a surging Canadiens’ club. Regardless of the outcome, it’ll be one that Habs fans will be extra keen to watch. Former Montreal hero, PK Subban, will suit up against his old squad

This, That, and a Dart Throw

Montreal has been idle since a 4-3 overtime loss to Toronto on Saturday. They made separate trades with Philadelphia and Los Angeles to bring in forwards Dale Weise, Nate Thompson, and defenseman Christian Folin. Weise spent parts of three seasons (2014-16) with the Canadiens, and Thompson have joined Nicolas Deslauriers on the fourth line. G Carey Price is 7-0-1 in his last eight starts overall and 4-4-2 with a 2.06 goals-against average versus Nashville.

Nashville Predators forward Viktor Arvidsson missed nearly the entire months of November and December. He has been on a goal-scoring binge over the past four weeks by scoring 11 times over the last 12 games. He has boosted his team-leading total to 25. Arvidsson, who amassed 60 goals over the previous two campaigns, joined linemate Filip Forsberg and Jason Arnott as the only players in franchise history to reach 25 in three consecutive seasons. Top-line center Ryan Johansen has collected a pair of assists in back-to-back contests. That gives him eight points during a five-game streak.

PREDICTION: Predators 3, Canadiens 2

NC State Hosts Syracuse in ACC Action

NC State ACC Football

The Orange or Wolfpack can Afford to Lose This one

The NC State Wolfpack host the Syracuse Orange in a key ACC battle on Wednesday night. The Wolfpack looks to build off its weekend win over Pittsburgh. The Wolfpack struggled through a rough stretch that saw them lose four of five game. All to ranked teams. They managed to rebound and hold off the late-charging Panthers for a 79-76 win on Saturday.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ACC Network LINE: Wolfpack -3; O/U: 143.

NC State was in desperate need of a win as their losing streak saw them drop out of the Top 25 and to the bottom half of the ACC standings. They got back in the win column by playing a complete game against Pitt. Syracuse got back in the win column following a home loss to No. 19 Florida State. They bounced back with a 67-56 home win over Boston College on Saturday.

The Syracuse Orange are 17-7 overall and 8-3 in the ACC. Buddy Boeheim is a freshman guard, and coaches son, averaging 13.5 minutes. He had a career day Saturday as he scored a career-high 16 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the 3-point line and 4-of-4 shooting from the free-throw line. Leading scorer Tyus Battle is averaging 17.9 ppg. He once again led the Orange with 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting while adding four rebounds and three steals. The Orange used a raucous home crowd of 26,011 to fuel its defense. The D held the Eagles to 33.3% shooting while also blocking six shots and forcing 18 turnovers. The crowd on Saturday was the largest in Division I this season.

The NC State Wolfpack are 17-7 on the season and 5-6 in ACC play. Guard C.J. Bryce scored a game-high 21 points on 6-of-11 shooting Saturday. He was 4-of-5 from the 3-point line, while also grabbing seven rebounds. The Wolfpack weren't all that efficient from the floor though. They only shot 26-of-64 (40.6 percent). They made up for it by nailing a season-best 14 3-pointers on 51.9 percent shooting from long range. The Wolfpack did allow Pitt to shoot 47.3 percent from the field, but forced 15 turnovers. They held the Panthers without a field goal over their final seven attempts.

PREDICTION: North Carolina State 76, Syracuse 67

Rockets and Timberwolves on ESPN

Minnesota Timberwolves

Can Harden Tie Wilt in 30 Point Games?

After adding some extra help at the trade deadline, the Houston Rockets (33-23 SU, 26-29-1 ATS) hope they have the right formula for another deep run in the NBA playoffs. The Rockets will test their new lineup tonight when they visit the Minnesota Timberwolves (26-30 SU, 28-28 ATS); ESPN will air this game at 8 PM ET.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN, AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston), FS North (Minnesota) LINE: Rockets -3.5; O/U: 232.

James Harden strives to extend his streak of 30-point outings to 31 tonight. Another 30-point performance by Harden will tie Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain for the second-longest streak in NBA history.

As part of a series of moves, Houston acquired veteran guard Iman Shumpert from the Sacramento Kings on Thursday. Shumpert was enjoying a bounce-back year in Sacramento with the minutes he was given. He provided a steady hand on defense and a little bit of everything on offense. He’ll take over as a back-up wing for the departed James Ennis III, who is now with the 76ers. He also provides an insurance policy in case PG Chris Paul suffers another hamstring injury.

The Timberwolves didn’t make any moves at the trade deadline. They are rapidly falling out of contention in the Western Conference at 5-8 SU and ATS in their last dozen games. Swingman Robert Covington (knee) and guard Tyus Jones (ankle) remain out indefinitely. PG Derrick Rose is listed as day-to-day with an ankle issue. The status of guard Jerryd Bayless (toe) is undetermined at press time.

Harden finished with a flurry to reach 30 during Monday's 120-104 win over the Dallas Mavericks. He was hindered by an ailing left shoulder he hurt on Saturday against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Rockets have defeated Minnesota in 17 of the past 21 meetings, but the Timberwolves won this season's first matchup. Minnesota won for just the second time in its past eight contests on Monday. They won 130-120 over the visiting Los Angeles Clippers.

This, That, and a Dart Throw

Harden's streak was in deep jeopardy on Monday as he had just 20 points with under three minutes to play. He poured in 11 late points, including a 3-pointer with 52.9 seconds to surpass 30. Chris Paul had 11 assists to move into eighth place on the all-time list with 8,972. He surpassed "The Glove" Gary Payton, who accumulated 8,966 from 1990-2007. Kenneth Faried is averaging 16.3 points, on 75-of-116 shooting, in 11 games since joining the club.

Derrick Rose (22 points, six assists) and Jeff Teague (19 points, 10 assists) were both on the floor in the same game for the first time since Jan. 20th. They ignited the squad out of its recent slumber. Teague, who has a bum foot, missed eight straight games before returning for Friday's contest against the New Orleans Pelicans. Rose missed six of the previous seven before suiting up Monday. The Timberwolves held the Rockets to 29 second-half points while racking up a 103-91 home win on Dec. 3rd.

Celtics Travel to Face the 76ers

76ers NBA Basketball

76ers Look Much Improved after Trades at Deadline

The Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers will meet at Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday in a battle of division rivals. The 76ers made significant improvements at last week's trade deadline. They have since played like a team that is headed in the right direction. The Celtics failed to make any upgrades prior to the deadline and are looking like a team that needed a shake-up.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT LINE: 76ers -6.5; O/U: 226.

After a quiet deadline day last Thursday, the Celtics lost on a buzzer-beater to the Los Angeles Lakers. They then blew a 28-point lead before falling to the Los Angeles Clippers 123-112 on Saturday in a demoralizing defeat. The Sixers are coming off impressive wins over the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers since making a series of deadline moves. Joel Embiid went off for 37 points and 14 rebounds in Sunday's 143-120 rout of the Lakers. Philadelphia moved one game ahead of Boston for fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

This, That, and a Dart Throw

The Celtics are 35-21 overall. Saturday's collapse began late in the first half after All-Star guard Kyrie Irving suffered a sprained knee that has him day-to-day entering the week. Gordon Hayward had a team-high 19 points off the bench. The other starters combined to shoot 14-for-42 from the floor without their leader. The Celtics took the first two meetings -- both at home. Irving scored 40 points in an overtime triumph against the Sixers on Christmas Day.

The 76ers are 36-20 overall. Embiid was 12-for-16 from the floor in Sunday's win. Newly acquired forward Tobias Harris had 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting in his second game with the team. Ben Simmons contributed seven assists and stunned the masses with a rare 3-point attempt that rattled in and out. Was it potentially signalling an addition to the dynamic All-Star's repertoire? Only time will tell and if Simmons can hit a few three's from time to time it will open things up more for the 76ers offense.

Kentucky and LSU Clash in SEC Hoops

Kentucky Wildcats Athletics

LSU and Kentucky Both are on Fire Heading into Matchup

The LSU Tigers and the Kentucky Wildcats will clash on Tuesday at Rupp Arena. They are two of the hottest teams in the nation at the moment. They meet with second place in the SEC on the line. Fifth-ranked Kentucky goes after its 11th straight victory against No. 21 LSU. It will not be an easy task as the Tigers have won 12 of its last 13 games. The Wildcats have allowed 58.9 points and 37.9 percent shooting from the field during their 10-game winning streak. LSU has scored at least 80 in 10 of its past 11 contests.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN LINE: Wildcats -8; O/U: 149.

The Wildcats hope to continue tightening all their screws while winning. They must come up with another big performance against the Tigers, who knocked off Auburn 83-78 on Saturday. LSU suffered their only loss since mid-December against Arkansas (90-89) on Feb. 2. Reigning SEC Player of the Week Tremont Waters leads the way for an LSU team that has shown the ability to rally in games consistently.

This, That, and a Dart Throw

The Tigers are 19-4 overall and 9-1 in SEC action. Waters is averaging 23.3 points over the last four games. That has pushed his team-leading scoring mark to 15.7 ppg while leading LSU with 6.1 assists per contest. He is also sitting tied for third in the nation in steals at 3.04 per game. Forward Naz Reid averaged 20.3 points and 9.7 boards over the last three games to improve his season totals to 13.9 ppg and a team-leading 6.2 rpg. Guard Skylar Mays scored 20 against Auburn and averages 13.4 overall along with two steals per game. LSU averages 83.3 points, which ranks third in the SEC and just one spot ahead of Kentucky (78.7).

The Wildcats are 20-3 overall and 9-1 in the SEC. Forward P.J. Washington leads the team in scoring, chipping in 14.2 per game. He also leads in rebounding at 8.0 rpg. He is averaging 20.8 points and 8.5 boards over the last six games. Keldon Johnson averages 13.9 ppg and is just 10-of-32 from the field in the last three games. Guard Tyler Herro averages 13.3 ppg and has drained 6-of-11 from behind the 3-point arc during the same 6-game stretch. Forward Reid Travis averages 11.7 points and 7.0 rebounds a game. He is shooting 52.2% from the field. Point guard Ashton Hagans leads the team in assists with 4.5 a game after matching a season high with nine on Saturday.

Lightning Host the Flames in NHL Action

Tampa Bay Hockey

NHL Odds: Top Offensive Clubs Face Off in Tampa Bay

If you’re a fan of offensive hockey, Tuesday’s contest between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Calgary Flames is a game not to be missed. The Nikita Kucherov-led Lightning top all other NHL teams in goals scored per game, averaging 3.78. Not far behind them in second are Johnny Gaudreau and the Flames, who score 3.67 goals per game.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Sportsnet West (Calgary), FS Sun (Tampa Bay); LINE: Lightning -150; O/U: 6.5 Over -135.

With an elite offense and above-average defense, the Lightning win a ton of games. In fact, they lead the entire NHL in points with 86. That is a cool 12 points better than the second-placed Flames. And year after year, star right winger Nikita Kucherov leads the show. The NHL’s top point-getter has amassed 22 goals and 59 assists on the season. He’s an MVP candidate and will likely make the Flames’ lives difficult on Tuesday. Calgary has hit a bit of a rough patch of late, dropping two-straight games and three of their last four. With a trip to Florida to face the Lightning, they’re hopeful that some warm weather and a change in scenery will help them get back on track. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET, so don’t miss what is sure to be one of the best games of the season.

Nikita Kucherov ended two droughts with authority last time out. The NHL's point leader looks to get on a roll again Tuesday night. Kucherov had gone 11 games without a goal before scoring twice in Sunday's 5-2 victory at Florida. He posted three points after being blanked in two consecutive contests to push his season total to 84.

Kucherov registered a pair of assists in a 5-4 shootout win at Calgary on Dec. 20th. The Flames will try to tighten up defensively after giving up 11 goals while losing the last two meetings with the Lightning. Calgary entered Monday leading the Western Conference with 74 points. They have dropped three of its last four contests (1-2-1) after suffering a 4-3 shootout setback at Vancouver on Saturday despite posting 47 shots.

This, That, and a Dart Throw

The Flames are 35-15-6 overall on the season. Left wing Matthew Tkachuk has been kept off the scoresheet in five straight contests and will try to break out of that slump as he plays his 200th NHL game tonight. Left wing Johnny Gaudreau has cooled off a bit with three of his team-leading 75 points in the last five games. Center Sean Monahan managed only two assists in his past five outings to place second on the team with 63 points. Forward Elias Lindholm made the scoresheet in 11 of his last 12 games, including three goals in four contests, and boasts a career-high 61 points. G David Rittich (20-4-5, .915 save percentage), who stopped 32-of-36 shots against Tampa Bay in December, has one regulation loss in his last 14 games.

The Lightning are 41-11-4 on the season. Right wing Ryan Callahan was told by the team recently he was relegated to being the 13th forward. He took advantage of a chance with left wing Ondrej Palat (upper body) out Sunday to score the game-winner and register seven hits. Stamkos is one away from his sixth 30-goal season and first since 2015-16 after scoring Sunday. LW Alex Killorn, who boasts a plus-15 rating this season, is two goals shy of 100 for his career but has one in the last 18 games.

ACC Hoops: UNC Tar Heels Host the Virginia Cavaliers

The fans at Dean Smith Center will the Virginia Cavaliers and the North Carolina Tar Heels when they take their seats on Monday. This is a game between two ACC heavyweights and should be a hard fought battle. We know one thing. Something will have to give in this matchup. One of the nation's best offenses takes on the nation's best defense.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN LINE: Tar Heels -1; O/U: 140.5.

Eighth-ranked North Carolina will test an offense that is averaging more than 90 points over the last six games when it visits No. 3 Virginia on Monday night for a critical ACC contest. The Tar Heels have won seven straight games after surviving a challenge from Miami (Fla.) on Saturday while grinding out an 88-85 overtime victory. They will face a Virginia team that is allowing a national-best 54.1 points per contest.

The Cavaliers have three straight wins over the Tar Heels including the ACC Tournament final last March. The Wahoos have given up 60 or more points just five times this season. But Virginia coach Tony Bennett will be looking for a "cleaner game" from his team after dropping an 81-71 decision to second-ranked Duke at home on Saturday. The Cavaliers allowed 13-of-21 shooting from 3-point range. "We just have to keep trying to tighten up and be as sound as we can," said Bennett, whose team is limiting opponents to 26.5 percent from behind the arc overall in 2018-19.

This, That, and a Dart Throw

The Cavaliers are 20-2 overall and 8-2 in the ACC. Junior guard Ty Jerome returned after missing one game with a back injury. He scored 16 points to go along with four assists against Duke. He will likely be a game-time decision in the quick turnaround Monday. Guard Kyle Guy also recorded 16 points versus the Blue Devils and leads the team in scoring at 14.6 ppg and 3-point shooting with 63 makes, while shooting 43.2%. Guard De'Andre Hunter, who averages 14.5 ppg, scored 11 against Duke. He is shooting 52.5 percent from the field overall. Guard Braxton Key tops the team in rebounds at 6.1 rpg, including 28 total over the last three games. F Mamadi Diakite, who has at least one block in 15 straight games, left Saturday's game after a collision and his status is uncertain.

The Tar Heels are 19-4 overall and 9-1 in the ACC. Freshman guard Coby White is averaging 20 points during the winning streak to push his team-high scoring mark to 15.9. He matched a season high by scoring 33 against Miami. Brice Johnson is a close second in scoring at 15.8 ppg. Senior forward Luke Maye is pouring in 15.1 points and 9.7 rpg, is scoring 23.7 per game the last three contests. Johnson connected on 19-of-37 shots from 3-point range in the last six games and shoots 47.2 percent from behind the arc overall - second in the ACC.

NBA Monday Free Pick- Dallas Mavericks at Houston Rockets

Houston Rockets Basketball

Dallas at Houston

Monday night’s featured matchup on NBA TV at 8 p.m. is a Southwest Division tilt in Texas with the Dallas Mavericks going on the road to face the Houston Rockets. The Rockets are favored by 10.5 points with BetAnySports setting the total at 225 points.

Dallas will wrap up its three-game home stand on Sunday against Portland after beating Charlotte 99-93 last Wednesday ahead of Friday night’s 122-117 loss to Milwaukee. The Mavericks failed to cover as 5.5-point underdogs in Friday’s loss after posting a perfect 5-0 record against the spread in their previous five games. The total went OVER 226 points in the loss to the Bucks after staying UNDER in their previous four games.

The Mavericks appear to be raising the white flag on the season with their recent personnel moves ahead of last Thursday’s trade deadline. The most notable move jettisoned Harrison Barnes steep cap liability in a trade to Sacramento. He was the team’s second leading scorer with 17.7 points after Luca Doncic, who is averaging 20.6 points a game. Dallas is ranked 21st in the NBA in scoring with 109.1 PPG. It ranks 11th in points allowed (108.6).

The Rockets
have already lost the first two meetings this season against their division
rivals SU and ATS. More recently, their modest three-game SU winning streak
came to an end on Saturday night with a 117-112 loss to Oklahoma City as
2.5-point home favorites. Houston is now a very costly 3-9 ATS in its last 12
games, including a 1-5 mark covering the closing number at BetAnySports in its
last six home games. The total has gone OVER in four of its last six games
played at home.

James Harden
scored 42 points in Saturday’s loss after Paul George posted a game-high 45
points for OKC. The Rockets blew a 26-point lead in that game. Chris Paul added
18 points with 10 rebounds and nine assists, but Houston’s defense let that
game slip away. With Harden averaging 36.6 points a game, the Rockets’
113.1-point scoring average in ranked 11th in the league. They fall
to 14th on the list at the other end of the court with a
points-allowed average of 111.0.

Houston had won the previous eight meetings between the two before this season and I like its chances to snap the two-game SU skid on Monday night. My ‘best bet’ pick in this matchup is still the UNDER on the total line.

Shaan Washington Delivers AAF Viral Hit

The best football moment this month doesn’t come from the Super Bowl. Instead, it came from the upstart Alliance of American Football or the AAF. During its inaugural weekend, San Antonio Commanders’ linebacker Shaan Washington delivered the first AAF viral hit.

In the San Antonio-San Diego Fleet game, Washington found himself unblocked during a weakside blitz and sacked QB Mike Bercovici. The hit was so vicious that its short clip already got three million views as of Sunday afternoon.

Washington previously played for A&M. During his Aggie career, he got 269 tackles, with 6.5 sacks. He signed with the Minnesota Vikings in 2017 as an undrafted free agent. However, he didn’t get to play in a regular season game. Other A&M alumni on the Commanders squad are tight end Cameron Clear and running back Trey Williams.

AAF Viral Hit

The AAF wants to cash in on the nation’s obsession with football. It sees itself as a developmental league for the NFL, like MLB’s farm system or the NBA’s G-League. However, the AAF wants to introduce innovations, such as no kickoffs.

Shaan Washington Delivers AAF Viral Hit

Another AAF viral hit it introduced is the Sky Judge, which reviews plays in real-time. In fact, the Sky Judge can reverse calls made by the refs if there were errors. In addition, it gives football fans a unique experience that’s different from what the NFL has to offer. PPH bookie sites will support the league as well.

AAF co-founder Bill Polian is happy that the league’s inaugural weekend made sports news headlines. Also, he is thrilled by the warm support they got from fans. Although the AAF’s app encountered some technical glitches, it was on top of both the Google Play and Apple stores in the US.

The games have a great turnout, and fans were engaged from start to end. In addition, the AAF received a positive reaction on social media. It also received hundreds of inquiries about season tickets. The best pay per head bookie also offered betting lines on the games. All these are good signs for the new league.
