Red-Hot Stampeders Top CFL Betting Board, Face West Rival

The CFL's top two West Division teams will square off in a primetime bout this long weekend when the 6-2 Calgary Stampeders host the 5-3 Edmonton Eskimos on Monday afternoon.

Not only does the match serve as a potential preview of the league's West Division final, it also gives bettors an inside look at two heated story lines that ought to factor into any CFL betting decision.

Though both teams sit towards the top of the Grey Cup futures list, they?re headed in vastly opposite directions.

Having won their last four games, the Stampeders are well on their way to replicating last year?s success when they finished the 2010 campaign with the best record in Canadian football.

The Eskimos, on the other hand, after winning their first five games of the season have been in free fall ever since. With just 5/1 odds of winning the Grey Cup - a low mark considering six of the eight teams in the league make the playoffs - bettor confidence is obviously waning.

In contrast, the Stampeders have 9/4 odds of winning the CFL championship this fall. A mark even more optimistic than the 7-1 Blue Bombers and two-time reigning champion Alouettes.

Will the Stampeders continue their torrid run through the league or will the spotlight be all Edmonton needs to get their wayward season back on track?

CFL Preview: Winnipeg Blue Bombers vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Saskatchewan Roughriders will both be trying to pick up a win on Sunday when they battle at Mosaic Stadium at Taylor Field.

Oddsmakers currently have the Blue Bombers listed as 3-point favorites versus the Roughriders, while the game's total is sitting at 49½.

Buck Pierce tossed two touchdown passes in Week 9 to lead the Blue Bombers to a 30-27 win over the Tiger-Cats.

The Blue Bombers failed to cover the 3.5-point spread in that contest, while the combined score went OVER the night's posted total (49).

Darian Durant threw two TD passes in the Roughriders' 24-18 loss to the Argonauts in Week 8.

The Argos managed to cover the 3-point spread at home in that contest, while the combined score fell UNDER the night's posted total (54).

Current streak: Winnipeg has won 5 straight games. Saskatchewan has lost 4 straight games.

CFL Odds Board in Flux as Bubble Contenders Clash

Lost in the hype of the the CFL's elite are a pair of wayward franchises sputtering in two of the country's largest markets. Though it may not be the best for business in big cities, it only adds drama to the CFL betting field.

This Friday the Toronto Argonauts, four years removed from a plus-.500 season and on the verge of missing the playoffs altogether, will host the equally disenfranchised B.C. Lions.

The match up may lack the fanfare of a contender tilt elsewhere in the Canadian Football League, but it's a reflection of the power shift in the game, and specifically the dog fight on the horizon at the bottom of the CFL betting board.

Though they each won their most recent match ups in Week 8, Toronto over Saskatchewan and B.C. over Edmonton, their desperate attempts to cling to a playoff berth are only just beginning.

With the current CFL playoff format, six of the league?s eight teams will qualify for a berth. That?s why, despite their 2-6 record, the Lions have 10/1 odds of winning the Grey Cup.

The reason the Lions face 10/1 odds, as opposed to Toronto's 30/1, is because B.C. currently sits third in the West Division (ahead of the 1-7 Saskatchewan Roughriders). The Argos, two games behind 4-4 Hamilton, sit fourth in the East.

Not all however is lost for Toronto, thanks to the CFL?s crossover playoff berth which allows a fourth-place team in one division to steal the berth of a third-place team in the opposing conference so long as they finish with more points in the regular season standings.

That backdoor entrance to the postseason is what will make this Friday?s basement-dwelling showdown an event with utmost playoff implications.

The Alouettes managed to cover the 4.5-point spread on the road in that contest, while the combined score went OVER the night's posted total (52).

The Tiger-Cats fell on the road in Week 6, losing 32-20 to the Stampeders in Calgary.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers: Early Fluke or High Payout CFL Bet Option

A season ago the Winnipeg Blue Bombers were a nonfactor, the lone East Division team to miss the boat on the playoffs. Their 4-14 record wasn't just last in their own conference though, but also the entire league.

This season, however, they've emerged as one of the most intriguing options on the odds board.

Through 2011's first six weeks, the Blue Bombers have not only turned their fortunes around, but done so dramatically. They currently sit first in the East Division and tied in the CFL for the best record. Their defense has allowed the fewest amount of points against this season - by far.

Perhaps most impressively, they've already won more games than last year out.

Why then, do they have just 7/1 odds of winning the Grey Cup?

This Saturday, Winnipeg will have an opportunity to extend their 5-1 mark to 6-1, as they host the last-place B.C. Lions. A victory may well raise their stock in the eyes of oddsmakers but likely not by much.

Despite their success so far this season, they remain closer to the bottom of the barrel than the top when it comes to CFL futures.

Will Winnipeg's success last over the course of the season? It may be tough with the Montreal Alouettes on their heels and with the West Division sharpening their teeth as they year progresses, but at least the Blue Bombers can take solace in the fact that no matter what happens over the remaining 12 weeks, they've already improved in the win column.

CFL Betting Board Heats Up As Eskimos Face Alouettes

The Edmonton Eskimos may have had their undefeated record soiled last week against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, but that doesn?t mean they?re no longer a legitimate option when it comes to CFL betting.

This Thursday the Eskimos will head to Montreal to face another East Division juggernaut, the two-time reigning champion Alouettes. Can they bounce back in time to reclaim the momentum lost in Week 6?

Bet on the CFL now.

According to Bodog?s online sportsbook, the Eskimos have 4/1 odds of winning the Grey Cup. Though football fans will knock them slightly for falling to Winnipeg, they remain one of the toughest teams in the CFL behind the resurgence of quarterback Ricky Ray.

In Montreal, the last three weeks haven?t gone as smoothly. Though 4-2 now, the Als started to show cracks in Weeks 4 and 5, dropping a pair of matches to the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Is this the end of the road for veteran QB Anthony Calvillo? If Week 6 is any indication, not quite. A 36-23 victory over the lowly Toronto Argonauts may be all the Alouettes need to get back on track in their pursuit of a three-peat.

Might this Week 7 tilt be a preview of the Grey Cup?

Streaking Tiger-Cats Hit the Road Against Calgary

Lost in the shuffle of Edmonton's undefeated 2011 season and Montreal's bid for a third-straight Grey Cup title, there have been two CFL clubs that have quietly put their work in early this year and seen it pay off.

This Saturday the 3-2 Calgary Stampeders will host the 3-2 Hamilton Tiger-Cats as each looks to improve their position in their respective division coming off of significant Week 5 victories.

Have an idea of how the match up will unfold? Bet on the CFL with Bodog

For the hometown Stampeders it will be a third opportunity to win their first home game of 2011. Despite their above .500 record, is 3-0 on the road and winless at McMahon Stadium, a surprising trend for the team that finished with the top record in the CFL in 2010.

After struggling early, in Week 5 the Stampeders took down the reigning Grey Cup runner up Saskatchewan Roughriders. Will this Saturday serve as the next stepping stone for the franchise hungry to climb back into contention?

Coming off a victory over the Montreal Alouettes the Tiger-Cats are riding high and will be no easy opponent. After starting the season in a 0-2 hole, Hamilton has knocked off three straight with no signs of slowing down.

Is the momentum enough to vault them into the top of the East Division standings? They currently have 5/1 odds of winning the Grey Cup. The once-favored Stampeders currently sit third in the CFL with 7/2 odds.

Calgary Stampeders Struggle to Live Up to Odds in 2011

Lost in the early success of the Edmonton Eskimos is the fact that the top two teams in the West Division last year have struggled early in 2011. This week one of them will have a chance to salvage some momentum.

In a rematch of the 2010 West Division Finals, the Saskatchewan Roughriders will host the Calgary Stampeders Saturday at 9 PM EST.

Bet on the CFL with Bodog.

With a 1-3 mark through Week 4, the Roughriders are far from where they anticipated they would be to start the year after making it as far as they championship game last fall. They?ve struggle mightily on both sides of the ball, allowing a league-high 138 points against and scoring for themselves just 83.

All things considered, despite their success in 2010, the Roughriders have the second worst outlook on the CFL futures board with just 10/1 odds of winning the Grey Cup in the eight-team league.

The Stampeders are a bit of a different story. Though they finished last season with the CFL?s best record, their early exit at the hands of Saskatchewan spoiled the campaign. This time out expectations are high, despite their mixed success in the first month of the season.

Though Calgary has been towards the top of the CFL futures board all season (now with 4/1 odds of winning the Grey Cup), they sit at just .500 with a game log that includes losses to both the Toronto Argonauts and Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Will this be the week the Roughriders show a glimpse of the team that rallied to the Grey Cup last week? Or will the Stampeders crawl back above .500 in their pursuit of a West Division first-round playoff bye.
