NFL Preseason Brings QB Questions for Texans

The Houston Texans kickoff the first full week of action in the NFL preseason with a road game against the Carolina Panthers. The Wednesday night game is the featured matchup on the NFL Network. BetAnySports opened the Panthers as three-point favorites. The total was opened at 36. After a couple of weeks of betting, the line now has the Panthers as 1-point favorites. The total is now up to 38.

The big question for Houston heading into this preseason opener is which quarterback on its current roster will line up under center. Early September is when the games start counting for real, and it is not far away. The Texans drafted former Clemson standout Deshaun Watson with the 12^th overall pick in the 2017 draft. He may have to wait a bit to take his place as the team’s quarterback of the future. Tom Savage is still holding the top spot on the depth chart. Houston also has quarterback Brandon Weeden on its roster.

The Texans have been able to win the AFC South Division the last two years. They won it with a record of 9-7 both seasons. Their projected win total this season has been set at 8.5. Moneyline odds set at -110 for both the UNDER and the OVER. Houston is a slight +200 favorite to win this division again in 2017. They are followed by Indianapolis with +220 betting odds. Last year the Texans went 2-8 against the spread when closing as an underdog.

Panthers Look to Improve During NFL Preseason

Carolina slipped all the way to 6-10 last season after making a run all the way to the Super Bowl back in 2015 after going 15-1 straight-up in the regular season. The Panthers were 6-8-2 ATS overall in 2016 and they went 3-4-1 ATS on their home field. Their projected win total for this season stands at nine games with the betting odds slightly favoring the OVER at -115. Carolina’s betting odds to win the NFC South are set at +225 as the second favorite behind Atlanta (+155).

There is no quarterback controversy in Carolina with a healthy Cam Newton back under center, but it remains to be seen how much action he will see on Wednesday night. Panthers’ fans will be more interested in watching first round pick Christian McCaffrey run the ball in an effort to take some of the pressure off Newton as the center piece of this offense.

I would lay the one-point with BetAnySports in this game and take Carolina. While the actual results do not count in the standings, I get the feeling that the Panthers would like get things started on a winning note after a very disappointing 2016 campaign.

Roughriders and BC Lions Kick Off Home and Home

BC Lions Looking for 5th Win

The fans at BC Place will see the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the British Columbia Lions on Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 7 pm EST. The first meeting of 2017 between the Riders and the BC Lions is also the first of back to back games between the two teams. This could be a significant early-season turning point.

Oddsmakers have the BC Lions as a 7-point favorite. The total is at 55.5.

British Columbia was a 37-26 loser in its last match on the road against the Edmonton Eskimos. They failed to cover the +2.5-point spread as underdogs, while the total score of 63 sent OVER bettors to the payout window. BC battled back from an early 14-point deficit. They tied the game up midway through the third quarter. Eskimos QB Mike Reilly rushed for two short touchdowns in the final quarter to pull away from the Lions.

BC quarterback Travis Lulay completed 22-of-26 passes for 259 yards with two passing touchdows. He also had a rushing major, and two interceptions.  The 33-year-old veteran will get his third straight start on Saturday. Lulay’s offense will get a boost as Chris Williams is set to make his season debut for the Lions. BC’s prized off-season acquisition has been recovering from a knee injury. Williams finished 2016 with 1,246 receiving yards despite being sidelined for the REDBLACKS’ final four games

Riders are Trying to Gain Momentum

The Roughriders are coming off of a big win. They got past the Toronto Argonauts 38-27 last week. Saskatchewan trailed by four heading into the fourth quarter. They outscored the Argos 18-3 to solidify the victory.

The Riders’ offence proved to be too much for Toronto. Kevin Glenn put on a show in front of the home crowd. He completed 24 of 37 passes for 340 yards and four touchdowns. Duron Carter was on the receiving end of two of those tosses.  He led all receivers with 131 yards on nine catches. Bakari Grant also had an great day. He racked up 115 yards on just five catches. The Riders’ ground game was just as solid. Cameron Marshall rushed for 110 yards.

Astros Host Blue Jays Saturday Night

Altuve Back in Lineup for Astros

The Toronto Blue Jays and the Houston Astros will battle on Saturday at Minute Maid Park. Astros manager A.J. Hinch gave All-Star second baseman Jose Altuve the day off on Friday night against the Toronto Blue Jays. Hinch remains adamant that his top players need occasional days off. This is to lessen the potential for injuries from overwork. Altuve played in 105 of the Astros' 108 games before this scheduled rest.

Altuve is hitting .365 with 16 home runs and 62 RBIs. He was named American League Player of the Month this week. He recorded his 20th three-hit game on Thursday night against the Tampa Bay Rays. Altuve leads the majors in batting and has 151 hits.

The Blue Jays will pin their hopes on the pitching of right hander Marco Estrada in this game. Estrada has a 4-7 record and a 5.19 ERA this season.

It'll be Charlie Morton toeing the rubber for the Astros in this contest. Right hander Morton is 9-4 with a 3.77 ERA so far this season.

Eskimos Look to Stay Perfect Against Tiger-Cats

Eskimos Look to Avoid Letdown Against Hamiltion

The winless Hamilton Tiger-Cats go on the road to face the Edmonton Eskimos on Friday at Commonwealth Stadium. The Eskimos seem to have the Tiger-Cats number. the Edmonton cut the Ticats’ season short last year. They beat them in Eastern Semi-Final. Edmonton also slammed the door shut on the Ticats two weeks ago.  Hamilton was primed for their first win of the season. Edmonton scored the go-ahead touchdown with less than a minute left. They beat the Tabbies 31-28.

Oddsmakers have put the Eskimos as 10-point favorites. The total is sitting at 56.

Eskimos Have Been Humming Right Along on Offense

The Eskimos were a 37-26 winner in their most recent outing at home against the BC Lions. They covered the -2.5-point spread as favorites, while the total score (63) made winners of OVER bettors.

The Eskimos have been unstoppable through five games. QB Mike Reilly threw for an impressive 412 yards with two touchdowns. He had two rushing TD's as well. Three Eskimo receivers posted over 100 yards. Vidal Hazelton led the offense with 159 yards and a TD. That included a Sportscenter worthy 108-yard touchdown reception. It set a new franchise record for longest completed pass.

The injuries are continuing to pile up for the Eskimos as well. Eight new players found themselves on the injured list following the win to BC. That brings the total of wounded players to 18. Fifteen of those players have started this year. Two of the most noticeable names to join the walking wounded is running back Travon Van and Dynamic receiver D’haquille ‘Duke’ Williams.

Hamilton Looks to Rebound From Shellacking

Hamilton was a 60-1 loser in its last game on the road against the Calgary Stampeders. They failed to cover the +12.5-point spread as underdogs, while the total score of 61 sent OVER bettors to the payout window.  Quarterback Zach Collaros managed only 102 yards with an interception last week. He was replaced by Jeremiah Masoli. Luke Tasker posted a team-high 82 yards on nine catches in the loss.

The Hamilton defense was awful in Week 6. They gave up three touchdown runs by Jerome Messam and 496 yards as a unit.

Linebacker Simoni Lawrence will be back in the lineup after missing last week with a nagging lower body injury. That is the only good news the Tiger-Cats received on the injury front this week. Defensive end Adrian Tracy was placed on the one-game injured list. All-Star defensive back Abdul Kanneh has suffered another setback. He is on the six-game injured list just a week after making his debut.
