ALDS Preview: Yankees and Indians Square off in Cleveland

Aces Not on the Mound in ALDS for Yanks and Indians

The New York Yankees and the Cleveland Indians open their 2017 ALDS Series tonight at 7:30 pm EST. The game from Progressive Field will be telecast live across the nation on Fox Sports 1.

Neither teams Aces will be on the mound tonight. Fans should still expect to see a good pitching matchup. Yankees ace Luis Severino started the AL wild-card game against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday.

Indians ace Corey Kluber is rested but will start Game 2. Manager Terry Francona wants to have Kluber pitch on his normal day to pitch. This also sets up to be ready for a possible Game 5 start.

It will be New York's Sonny Gray vs. Cleveland's Trevor Bauer in Game 1.

Oddsmakers have the Indians listed as -143-moneyline favorites. The total is at 8.5.

Indians Had Best Record in AL

The Indians come into the ALDS with the best record in the American League. They were 102-60 and have won 34 of their last 38 games. The amazing streak that includes their American League-record 22-game winning streak.

The Indians went 5-2 against the Yankees during the regular season. Three of those wins were during Cleveland's 22-game winning streak.

Indians pitchers will be trying to stimey Yankees rookie slugger Aaron Judge. Judge hit a rookie-record 52 home runs this season. He added another in New York's 8-4 win over Minnesota in the wild-card game.

Bauer had a breakout season this year. He finally put things together and went 17-9 with a 4.19 ERA. In two starts against the Yankees he was 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA.

Yankees Look for Strong Showing in ALDS

Gray was 10-12 with a 3.55 ERA in 27 starts this year for the Oakland A's and New York. He has 11 starts for the Yankees. Gray went 4-7 with a 3.72 ERA. He started three times against the Indians this year, going 1-2 with a 4.86 ERA.

Gray's last start against Cleveland came on Aug. 3. It was a 5-1 loss in which he pitched six innings. He gave up four runs, two of them earned, on four hits. Gray also had six strikeouts and three walks in his Yankees debut. Gray's career record against Cleveland is 3-3 with a 3.38 ERA.

ALDS Preview: Chris Sale Takes Mound for Red Sox in Game 1

Sale and Verlander Square off in ALDS

This Sunday, Manager John Farrell, announced that his Ace, Chris Sale, would start Game 1 of the ALDS. Sale is 17-8 and a 2.90 ERA. The MLB leader in strikeouts, with 308, will make his first postseason appearance on Thursday. The game is scheduled to start at 4:08 PM ET on FOX Sports 1.

Oddsmakers have the Astros as -138-moneyline favorites. The total is sitting at 7.

US Senate Special Odds: Kid Rock and Caitlyn Jenner

Kid Rock is Serious About US Senate Run

Anything can happen in American politics. That includes Kid Rock running for Senate. The rap-rock musician, and former husband to Pamela Anderson, is an unabashed supporter of Donald Trump. Kid Rock has been vocal in his interest in running for US Senate. He would run as a Republican in 2018 for his native state of Michigan. Will he do it? We will see.

Kid Rock is definitely playing up his interest. He even had “Kid Rock for US Senate” T-shirts on sale during last week’s venue-opening concert at the new Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. If Mr. Rock (birth name: Robert Richie) does decide to run, he’s a +450 underdog to unseat the three-term incumbent.

Sun Belt Preview: Arkansas State vs. Georgia Southern

Georgia Southern Looking for First Win

The Arkansas State Red Wolves and the Georgia Southern Eagles open their Sun Belt Conference schedules on Wednesday when they meet at Paulson Stadium in Statesboro, Georgia. This game starts a key stretch run for both teams in conference play. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 and kickoff is set for 8 pm EST.

Oddsmakers have Arkansas State listed as a 9-point favorite. It opened at 7 and has went up two points in the last couple of hours. The total is still at 55 points.

In their last action, Georgia Southern was a 52-17 loser on the road against the Indiana Hoosiers. They failed to cover the +22-point spread as underdogs, while the combined score (69) was profitable news for OVER bettors.

Georgia Southern enters Wednesday night’s matchup winless, at 0-3. They are desperate to change that. The Eagles are struggling in coach Tyson Summers’ second year.  The arrival of Sun Belt play should give Summers a good idea of where this program is in relation to the rest of the league.

In an effort to get the offense on track, Summers hired Georgia Tech assistant Bryan Cook as the new play-caller. Cook has deep roots running the option. The option has been this programs bread and butter for 30-plus years. Arkansas State is a Sun Belt Contender

Last time out for Arkansas State, they were a 44-21 loser as they battled the SMU Mustangs on the road. Arkansas State failed to cover in the match as a +2.5-point underdog, while 65 combined points moved the game UNDER for totals bettors.

Arkansas State’s Blake Anderson is one of the Sun Belt’s best coaches. Anerson has this program in position to contend for the league title once again. The Red Wolves are 25-17 since 2014. They are 15-1 in conference games over the last two seasons.

Arkansas State gave Nebraska all it could handle in the season opener. They fell short in the upset bid, losing 43-36 in Lincoln. The Week 2 matchup against Miami was canceled due to Hurricane Irma. The Red Wolves pounded FCS member Arkansas-Pine Bluff 48-3 on Sept. 16.  They fell 44-21 at SMU on Sept. 23. Arkansas State is on the road for three out of their next five contests.

Arkansas State and Georgia Southern have played each other previously just twice. The Red Wolves won 27-26 last season at home. The Eagles won in 1986 in the I-AA (now FCS) national title game.

NL Wild-Card: DBacks Host Rockies, Winner Advances

NL Wild-Card Game How Two Familiar Foes

The Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks meet on Wednesday at Chase Field in the NL Wild-Card game. These two teams are about as close as teams can get. First pitch is set for 8:05 pm EST. The game is going to be televised by TBS.

They share a spring training facility in Scottsdale, Arizona. Their clubhouses are separated by a couple of concrete walls and about 400 feet of stadium grass. They opened spring training against each other this year and met 19 times in the regular season.

All of that just to get to this Winner-Take-All NL Wild-Card game. The winner will advance to take on their division rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Arizona won 11 of the 19 meetings this season. They are on a bit of a roll. The team has won nine of the past 13 head-to-head matchups. The Diamondbacks outscored the Rockies 101-69 in the regular season.

Oddsmakers opened the Diamondbacks as -163-moneyline favorites versus the Rockies, while the game's total opened at 9. The line is now up to Arizona -178-moneyline favorite and the total has slid down to 8.5.

Rockies Hope to Solve DBacks Pitching in NL Wild-Card

The Rockies will pin their hopes on the pitching of right hander Jon Gray in this game. Gray has a 10-4 record and a 3.67 ERA this season.

Gray beat the D-backs twice in three starts this year. Both games were at Chase Field. He struck out a season-high 10 in each turn in Arizona. Gray is 2-2 with a 4.75 ERA in five career starts versus the Diamondbacks.

The Rockies led the NL with 824 runs this year. They feature a pair of MVP candidates as well. Center fielder Charlie Blackmon and third baseman Nolan Arenado have had great seasons. Blackmon set a major league record with 103 RBIs from the leadoff spot. Arenado had his third straight 130-plus-RBI season. Each had 37 homers.

D-Backs Look to Continue Dominance Over Rockies

Starting this game for the Diamondbacks will be Zack Greinke. The right hander has a 3.20 ERA to go along with a 17-7 record this season.

 

Greinke beat the Rockies in Arizona and at Coors Field this season. He was 2-1 with a 3.41 ERA in five starts this season. Four of them were quality starts. The other was two outs short of it. He is 9-5 with a 3.93 ERA in 25 career games versus Colorado.

Arizona scored 12 fewer runs this year, but finished third in the NL in team ERA. The D-Backs ERA was 3.66. They improved by nearly a run and a half over the worst ERA in the majors last season, 5.09. The D-backs have their own MVP candidate in first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. He rang up 36 homers and 120 RBIs this season.

Arizona right fielder J.D. Martinez could be the best trade-deadline acquisition in many years. He blew up for 29 homers and 65 RBIs in 62 games after begin acquired from the Detroit Tigers. Martinez had 16 homers in September. That tied Ralph Kiner's NL record for the month.
