NBA on ESPN: Wizards Host the 76ers to Open Season

Wizards Look to Build on 2016 Success

The fans at Verizon Center will see the Philadelphia 76ers and the Washington Wizards open the 2017-18 season when they take their seats on Wednesday. The game is set to tip a few minutes after 7 pm EST. It is being telecast on the Wednesday Night NBA package on ESPN.

The Washington Wizards was one of the NBA's surprise teams a year ago with 49 wins. They enter the 2017-18 season among the Eastern Conference favorites.

If Joel Embiid can stay on the court the Philadelphia 76ers might be the team making the biggest rise.

Oddsmakers opened the Wizards as -7.5-point favorites versus the 76ers, while the game's total opened at 215. The line now has Washington as 6.5-point favorites. The total has risen to 217.5.

Wizards are Stacked with Talent

The Wizards spent the off-season thinking about coming up one game short of reaching the Eastern Conference finals. Washington lost a hard fought seven-game series to the Boston Celtics. The Wizards largely kept their core intact as they like what they see.

Wall finished second in the NBA in assists. He was tied with backcourt partner Bradley Beal averaging a team-high 23.1 points per game. Small forward Otto Porter was at the top of the leaderboard in 3-point shooting. Markieff Morris was a two-way threat at the power forward.

The Wizards must focus on the long haul. They need to get by possibly the first month of the season without Morris. He underwent sports hernia surgery before training camp. Jason Smith, free agent signee Mike Scott and third-year forward Kelly Oubre Jr. will help fill in for now.

76ers Need to Stay Healthy This Season

Embiid is one of the league's top young talents. He is an engaging player and only played in 31 games last season. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 draft didn't play in either of his first two seasons because of injuries to his legs and ankles.

Philadelphia signed Embiid to a massive extension earlier this month. The Sixers remain cautious with their prized asset. He is only going to see about 16 minutes a game to start the season.

Philadelphia won both home games against Washington last season. Last seasons top pick, Ben Simmons, missed all of last season with an injury. He enters his first season a true favorite to win Rookie of the Year honors. He is a crafty big-man with point guard skills.

Guard Markelle Fultz, who was the top pick in the 2017 draft, might challenge Simmons for ROY honors. They have to get him healthy as a shoulder injury is limiting the University of Washington product early on.

St. Louis Blues Host Chicago Blackhawks Wednesday

St. Louis Blues Look to Halt Two Game Losing Streak

The Chicago Blackhawks and the St. Louis Blues will meet on Wednesday night at the Scottrade Center. NBC Sports Network will have all the action live. The puck will drop a few minutes after 8 pm EST.

Both the teams could have a key player returning to their lineup Tonight. The rivals play for the first time this season on Wednesday night.

The Blues have been without forward Alexander Steen for the first six games this season. He  was recovering from a broken left hand from the first preseason game.

Forward Nick Schmaltz is expected to play for the Blackhawks. He missed the past four games because of an apparent head injury.

Oddsmakers opened the Blues as -120-moneyline favorites versus the Blackhawks, while the game's total opened at 5.5.

St. Louis Blues Look to Keep Hot Start Going

The Blues were a 2-1 loser in their most recent outing on the road against the Tampa Bay Lightning. That made winners of bettors who got Tampa Bay at -145 on the moneyline, while the total score (3) was good news for UNDER bettors.

Steen is expected to be on left wing on the Blues' top line with Paul Stastny and Vladimir Tarasenko. His return should provide more depth on the other lines for the Blues. The team has not had a goal scored by anybody on either the third or fourth line in their first six games.

Wednesday night's game will be only the second home contest for the Blues. They play seven of their first nine games on the road.

Blackhawks Look to be Better with Schmaltz Return

Last time out for Chicago, they were a 2-1 winner as they battled the Nashville Predators at home. Moneyline bettors who got the Blackhawks at -138 were rewarded, while the 3 combined goals moved the game UNDER for totals bettors.

Schmaltz will return to his spot at the center of the line of Patrick Kane and Ryan Hartman. Kane did not have a goal and registered three assists taking Schmaltz's place.

NLCS Game 4: Dodgers Look to Sweep Cubs

Dodgers Look to Cement 1st World Series Trip Since 1998

The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs tee it up on Wednesday Night in Game 4 of the NLCS. They meet at Wrigley Field, where the Cubs are trying to stave off elimination, and being swept out of the playoffs. First pitch is set for 9:08 pm EST. TBS will televise the game nationally.

The Cubs erased a 3-1 deficit in the 2016 World Series to capture their first championship since 1908. If they are to return to the Fall Classic, they will have to pull off a comeback that has been accomplished by just once in baseball history. The Boston Red Sox pulled off the feat in the 2004 ALCS against the New York Yankees.

The Dodgers are just a victory away from their first World Series appearance since 1988. That was the Kirk Gibson Miracle. The epic home-run off of Dennis Eckersley.

Oddsmakers have the Cubs as -108-moneyline favorites. The total is sitting at 9.5.

Alex Wood is on the Hill for the Dodgers

The Dodgers will give the ball to starter Alex Wood in this one. Left hander Wood is 16-3 this season with a 2.72 ERA. Alex Wood has not pitched since Sept. 26. Rust could be a problem for the talented left. Wood became the first Dodgers pitcher in more than a century to win his first 11 decisions.

Wood has made four postseason appearances, all in relief. He faced the Cubs twice this season. Wood allowed two runs  in 3 2/3 innings of a no-decision at Wrigley on April 10. He blanked Chicago on two hits over five innings to earn the win on May 26.

Cubs Turn to Arrieta to Hold off Dodgers

The Cubs will counter Wood with Jake Arrieta. Right hander Arrieta has a 3.45 ERA to go along with a 14-11 record this season.

Arrieta is just 1-3 with a 3.77 ERA in five career starts against the Dodgers. They beat him in his only start against Los Angeles this season. Given the reality of the must-win game, Arrieta knows how much a solid outing on Wednesday could help the Cubs win.

The Cubs struggled to score runs in Tuesday nights 6-1 loss. They couldn't manage anything more than Kyle Schwarber's first-inning solo home run. With their season on the line, they hope their bats can catch fire.

New Look Celtics Open Season at Cavaliers

Cavaliers and Celtics Retooled for 2017-18 Season

The Boston Celtics and the Cleveland Cavaliers will open the 2017-18 NBA Season on Tuesday when they meet at Quicken Loans Arena. The game will be televised by TNT. Tip-off is set for 8 pm.

Cleveland's trade of Kyrie Irving to Boston for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, rookie center Ante Zizic and two draft picks in August was the league's biggest deal of the summer. It adds a lot of intrigue to the first game of the NBA's season.

The Cavs and Celtics were already the top two teams in the Eastern Conference. Cleveland is the team that  bounced Boston from the conference finals last season. It only took 5 games, also.

Oddsmakers opened the Cavaliers as -5.5-point favorites versus the Celtics, while the game's total opened at 216.5. The line has moved to where the Cavaliers are now a 4-point favorite. The total has dropped to 212.

Celtics Added Hayward as well to Revamped Lineup

The Celtics added Irving,who is a four-time All-Star. He averaged a career-high 25.2 points and shot a career-best 47.3 percent last season. They also picked up Gordon Hayward. He averaged a career-high 21.9 points for the Utah Jazz last season. The Celtics signed him to a four-year, $128 million free agent contract.

To get Irving and Hayward into the fold, and make the salaries work under the salary cap, the Celtics traded Isaiah Thomas and Crowder to Cleveland. They also dealt Avery Bradley to the Detroit Pistons for forward Marcus Morris.

Cavaliers Added Firepower as well

Cleveland not only added Thomas and Crowder. They also added Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade, who is a 12-time All-Star, and former Celtic Jeff Green as rotation players. Thomas has a right hip injury that is expected to keep him out for two months.

James sprained his left ankle in training camp. Tyronn Lue said Monday he still didn't know if the superstar would play in the opener.

James has never missed a season opener in his first 14 years in the league.

The Cavs are planning a video tribute to Irving. He made the game-winning 3-pointer in Game 7 of the 2016 Finals to hand the organization its first championship.
