World Series Game 3: Astros Have Home Field Advantage Now

Astros Earned Important Split on Road in World Series

The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Houston Astros play on Friday at Minute Maid Park in Game 3 of the MLB World Series. First pitch is set for 8:20 pm EST. FOX Sports will televise the game nationally.

The Astros picked up a split with the Dodgers out in Los Angeles. This gives the Stros' home-field advantage now with the next three games being in Houston.

Oddsmakers opened the Astros as -119-moneyline favorites versus the Dodgers. The game's total opened at 8.5. The line now has the Astros as -131-moneyline favorites. The total is sitting at 8.

Game 2 of the World Series was an instant classic, in no small thanks to both teams bullpens. It is more worrisome for the Astros as their bullpen has been shake the entire postseason.

Astros closer, Ken Giles blew a stunning late-inning power display by the Astros. They got solo homers from Marwin Gonzalez, Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa to take a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the 10th inning. Giles breezed through a perfect ninth inning. That was short-lived as he allowed two runs in the 10th. He needed right-hander Chris Devenski to bail him and the club out.

Dodgers Turn to Darvish in Game 3 of World Series

The Dodgers will give the ball to starter Yu Darvish in this one. Right hander Darvish is 12-12 this season with a 3.68 ERA.

Darvish is 5-5 with a 3.44 ERA over 14 career starts against the Astros. He made all of those with the Texas Rangers. Darvish logged 89 innings with 118 strikeouts and a 1.067 WHIP with Texas. He made two starts vs. the Astros 10 days apart in June.

He surrendered four runs on eight hits and four walks with 12 strikeouts over 12 innings. Darvish split those decisions, with Texas winning 6-1 in Houston.

How deep Darvish pitches into Game 3 could depend on many factors. Manager Dave Roberts faced criticism for leaning on the bullpen. In Game 2, Roberts pulled Rich Hill after he only worked four effective innings. Houston completed a stunning rally that shifted series momentum with the Astros coming home. Roberts used 8 relievers in the game.

Astros McCullers Jr. Takes the Hill

Lance McCullers Jr. starts for the Astros. Right hander McCullers Jr. is 7-4 with a 4.03 ERA so far this season.

Hinch doesn't have many obvious options for high-leverage situations should McCullers fatigue in the middle innings. Giles has a record of 0-1 with an  8.22 ERA over six games. He has struggled mightily this postseason. The closer has allowed opponents to post a 1.015 on-base-plus-slugging percentage.

Devenski is 1-0 with a 8.44 ERA. The All-Star who staggered throughout the second half hasn't fared any better. Opponents have produced a .905 OPS against Devenski over seven games this postseason.

Will Harris and Joe Musgrove have filled roles during the season. In the playoffs Musgrove has  a 7.36 ERA. Harris' allowed OPS stands at .905. That Hinch stuck with Devenski after Devenski allowed a solo homer to Charlie Culberson in the 11th inning reflects his unyielding belief in his players.

NBA on ESPN: Wall and Wizards Look to Stay Perfect Against Lakers

Will the Wall and Ball Sideshow Derail the Wizards

The Washington Wizards and the Los Angeles Lakers will on Wednesday at the Staples Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 10:30 pm. ESPN will telecast the game as its second game of its Wednesday night NBA Package.

Oddsmakers opened the Wizards as -6.5-point favorites versus the Lakers, while the game's total opened at 229. The line has dropped to Washington as a -5.5-point favorite. The total has edged down to 228.5.

Lavar Ball can't help but run his mouth and make things harder than they have to be for his son, Lonzo Ball. Here is part of a story from CBS Sports about tonight's game.

Lakers Look to Even Record Against Tough Wizards

Los Angeles was a 119-112 loser in its last match at home against the New Orleans Pelicans. They failed to cover the +4.5-point spread as underdogs, while the total score of 231 sent OVER bettors to the payout window.

The Lakers trailed by 20 points late in the third quarter on Sunday. This prompted coach Luke Walton to try a new combination of Jordan Clarkson, Julius Randle, Josh Hart, Kyle Kuzma and Brandon Ingram. The 5-man lineup worked well together and closed the gap. The Lakers moved ahead by five points midway through the fourth quarter.

The Pelicans went on an 11-0 run that put them back on top in the 119-112 victory.

Clarkson scored a team-high 24 points off the bench. He put up 18 and 17 points in the first two games of the season. He's shooting 51.1 percent from the field as well. He has been drilling them from 3-point distance. He is 7-for-14 from behind the arc.

Lonzo Ball hasn't shot the ball well in his first three games. He's putting up some good overall numbers. He is averaging 13.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 8.7 assists.

Ball went up against one of the NBA's best backcourt defenders in Patrick Beverley of the Los Angeles Clippers in the season opener. He'll face another tough matchup against John Wall of the Wizards. Wall led the NBA with 157 steals last season. He led all point guards with 49 blocked shots.

 

Wizards Look for First 4-0 Start Since 1978

Washington won its last outing, a 109-104 result against the Denver Nuggets on October 23. The Wizards covered in that game as a +5-point underdog, while the 213 combined points took the game UNDER the total.

The Wizards opened their four-game road trip with a victory in Denver on Monday. It marks only their fourth 3-0 start in franchise history. It is their first since 2005. Washington started 0-3 last season. The Wizards are the last unbeaten team in the Eastern Conference for the first time since 1974.

World Series Game 2: Can Astros Salvage a Split in LA?

Verlander Battles Hill in World Series Game 2

The fans at Dodger Stadium will see what should be another pitching duel tonight in the 2017 MLB World Series. The Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Dodgers will throw the first pitch at 8:09 pm EST. FOX Sports will televise the game across the globe.

Los Angeles left-hander Clayton Kershaw threw a masterpiece in the Dodgers' Game 1 victory Tuesday night. He threw seven innings, gave up one run, no walks, 11 strikeouts in a 3-1 win for the Dodgers.

Oddsmakers opened the Dodgers as -113-moneyline favorites versus the Astros, while the game's total opened at 7.5. The line is now the Astros -112-moneyline favorites. The total has dropped to 7 Under -125.

Astros Looking to Get out of LA With a Split

Right hander Justin Verlander will take the mound for the Astros to start this game. Verlander is 19-8 this season with a 3.16 ERA.

In four appearances, three of them starts, in this postseason, Verlander has a 1.46 ERA over 24 2/3 innings. He has struck out 24 with six walks. Every time Verlander has taken the mound this fall, the Astros have won.

Verlander went a combined 15-8 with a 3.36 ERA for the Detroit Tigers and the Astros in the regular season. He is 9-0 with a 1.23 ERA in a Houston uniform. That is regular season and postseason combined.

At 34, Verlander can rely on the mental side of his game even more. That is something his years of experience with the Tigers will play vital.  The physical side has returned him to being an elite pitcher after a couple of down years (for Verlander).

Dodgers Turn to Experience as Well in Revitalized Rich Hill

Rich Hill  is who starts for the Dodgers. Left hander Hill is 12-8 with a 3.30 ERA so far this season.

Hill, who is 37, has made just six previous postseason appearances. He will be making his World Series debut tonight. He was banished to independent baseball just a few years ago. Hill has now resurrected his career by leaning on his curveball more than ever. He is changing arm angles to keep hitters off balance also.

The revival began when he returned to being a starting pitcher for the Long Island Ducks in 2015. His stuff was eye-opening enough for the Red Sox to give him a shot. Edmonton Oilers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday Night

 

This Tuesday, the Edmonton Oilers take on the defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins (7 PM ET on Sportsnet ONE). Touted as two of the top teams heading into the regular season, neither team has performed as expected.
