Cardinals Hope to Turn Ho Hum Season Around

The Washington Nationals and the St. Louis Cardinals start a weekend three-game series on Friday when they meet at New Busch Stadium. Other than a six-game winning streak in early May that landed the Cardinals in first place, St. Louis' season has been mostly devoid of accomplishment.

That is why the Cardinals' hope their 10-4 victory at Arizona on Thursday could be a potential turnaround for them. The Cards won two of three in Chase Field, where the Diamondbacks have been 30-12 this season.

Right hander Tanner Roark will take the mound for the Nationals to start this game. Roark is 6-5 this season with a 5.15 ERA. The Nationals won two of three from the Cards in the season's second week. They hope that Roark can turn it around after three consecutive poor starts. Roark lost a 6-2 decision Sunday to Cincinnati. He allowed five first-inning runs.

It'll be Mike Leake toeing the rubber for the Cardinals in this contest. Right hander Leake is 5-6 with a 3.12 ERA so far this season. Leake looking to snap a streak of six winless starts. The streak dates back to May 29. He got a no-decision in an 8-4 victory Sunday night against Pittsburgh. He gave up four runs (three earned) over six innings.

Oddsmakers opened the Cardinals as -115-moneyline favorites versus the Nationals, while the game's total opened at 9.

In their last action, the Cardinals were a 10-4 winner on the road against the Arinzona Diamondbacks. Bettors on St. Louis at 116 on the moneyline collected their winnings from that game, while the total score (14) sent OVER bettors home happy as well.

Strasburg Looks to Stifle Cubs

Are the Chicago Cubs back on the winning track? They’ve won three straight series to get over .500 at 39-38; that still leaves the Cubs 11.62 betting units in the red for 2017, but it also puts Chicago within 1.5 games of first in the National League Central. They’ll try to close that gap this week at the expense of the Washington Nationals (46-31, +2.34 units), who are miles ahead of the pack in the NL East. Game 3 of their four-game series in DC goes Wednesday at 7:05 PM ET on the MLB Network.

Oddsmakers opened the Nationals as a -170 moneyline favorite and set the total at 8.5. The line now shows the Nationals as -174 moneyline favorites and the total has held steady at 8.5.

John Lackey (5.54 FIP) is one of the big reasons the defending World Series champions are still playing catch-up. The Cubs are 7-8 in Lackey’s 15 starts for a loss of 5.10 units; however, the veteran righty has performed better of late, allowing just one earned run over six innings in each of his last two games.

Lackey will be matched against Stephen Strasburg (3.19 FIP), one of the top pitchers in the majors. Washington is 11-4 behind Strasburg this year for 4.21 units in profit, but he’s struggled in back-to-back home games pitching in hot weather, which remains in the forecast for Wednesday.

Cubs Visit Nationals Monday Night

Cubs and Nationals Meet in First of Four in Series

The Chicago Cubs and the Washington Nationals open a four game series on Monday when they battle at Nationals Park. The game will be televised regionally on MLB Network. First pitch should be around 7:05 EST.

This early season series last year, played in May, turned the seasons around for both these teams. The Cubs walked Nationals prima donna, Bryce Harper 13 times. It got in Harpers' feeble mind. As a result the Cubs went on to win the World Series and Harper tailed off the rest of the season. The crybabby hit just .243 with 24 homers after he hit .330 with 42 creatures in 2015.

The Cubs will pin their hopes on the pitching of right hander Eddie Butler in this game. Butler has a 3-2 record and a 4.19 ERA this season. Butler is excited about this start. It is only four hours from his childhood home in the Tidewater region of Virginia. He played in college at Radford as well. It is a member of the Big South Conference based in southwest Virginia.

Gio Gonzalez will start for the Nationals. Left hander Gonzalez is 7-1 with a 2.96 ERA so far this season. Gonzalez is 3-2 with a 3.93 ERA in nine career starts against the Cubs.
