The Iron Bowl: Auburn Tries to Take Down #1 'Bama

The Iron Bowl

Iron Bowl Determines Who Plays UGA for SEC Title

The fans at Jordan-Hare Stadium will see The Iron Bowl, between the #1 Alabama Crimson Tide and the 6th-ranked Auburn Tigers when they take their seats on Saturday. The Iron Bowl features a winner-take-all matchup for the SEC West Division.

The winner earns the right to play Georgia in the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 2 in Atlanta.

Oddsmakers have Alabama as a 6-point favorite. The total is at 47.5.

The winner of the Iron Bowl has played for the national championship in seven of the past eight years. Alabama-Auburn was already one of the top rivalries in college football. The recent history has pushed it into another level altogether. Not many rivalries can boast this type of history.

Alabama has a 45-35-1 lead in the series and has won seven of the past nine matchups.

Auburn used the infamous Kick Six game to defeat Alabama in 2013. It ended the Crimson Tide's chance at three straight national championships. The Tigers defeated Missouri in the SEC Championship Game. Auburn then came a few seconds away from claiming the national championship in a tough loss to Florida State.

Auburn Used to Playing #1 Teams

Playing the top team in the country is nothing new for Auburn. The Tigers welcomed then-No. 1 Georgia into Jordan-Hare Stadium just two weeks ago. The Tigers hammered the Bulldogs 40-17. In reality the game that wasn't that close.

Running back Kerryon Johnson leads the SEC with 1,172 yards rushing and 16 rushing touchdowns. Auburn ranks No. 4 in the SEC in rushing yards per game. The War Eagles have almost always had a strong running game under Gus Malzahn. Despite running the spread offense, he believes teams must be physical in the run game.

Quarterback Jarrett Stidham has given the Tigers a downfield passing game they haven't had in a few years. Stidham has thrown for 2,445 yards with 16 touchdowns. The transfer only has four interceptions. He leads the SEC in completion percentage (67.8).

Auburn has been well over 200 yards rushing in seven of its last eight games. They only had 189-yard effort in the loss to LSU. The Tigers have been over 300 yards four times.

More of the Same from the Crimson Tide

Alabama has the No. 2 rush defense in the country, limiting teams to 87.4 yards per game.

The Tide loves to run as well. Alabama leads the SEC in rushing yards with 270.3 per game. They also lead in yards per carry at 6.03. Then throw in 35 rushing touchdowns.

Alabama All-American safety Minkah Fitzpatrick sat out last week's game against Mercer. He has a lingering hamstring issue. He was expected to practice through the week. Starting guard Ross Pierschbacher has a bum ankle and hadn't been cleared as of Monday but was considered day-to-day.

7th Ranked Georgia Bulldogs Looks to Rebound Against Kentucky

Georgia Bulldogs Football

Georgia Bulldogs Look to Redeem Selves after Auburn Shellacking

The fans at Sanford Stadium will see the upset minded Kentucky Wildcats battle the 3th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs when they take their seats on Saturday. The battle "Between the Hedges" will be televised nationally by CBS. Kick-off is set for 3:30 pm EST.

How will Georgia respond following last week's 40-17 shell-shocking defeat at the hands of their bitter rival, the Auburn Tigers? The loss that knocked the Bulldogs out of the top spot in the College Football Playoff rankings. They fell to No. 7.

They still have a chance to play for the national championship, but they can't afford another slip-up. Georgia already knows it's going to be playing Dec. 4 in Mercedes Benz Stadium for the SEC Championship. That will be against Auburn or top-ranked Alabama.

If The Bulldogs can get past the Wildcats, Georgia Tech, and win the SEC title game they are all but assured a spot in the playoffs.

Georgia Has to Get Running Game Going to Drive Offense

Georgia's Nick Chubb leads the way with 894 yards and 10 touchdowns. He needs just 106 yards to reach 1,000 for the third time in his career. Teammate Sony Michel has run for 731 and nine scores.

Jacob Fromm will try to bounce back from a difficult afternoon against Auburn, completing just 13 of 28 passes for 184 yards. He was battered and beaten the entire game, which was uncharacteristic of the Dawgs offensive line.

Georgia's passing game feeds off of the run game and that is priority #1 going into Saturday's SEC Tilt.

Kentucky can win 10 Games this Season

Kentucky won its last outing, a 44-21 result against the Vanderbilt Commodores on November 11. The Wildcats covered in that game as a +2-point underdog, while the 65 combined points took the game OVER the total.

The Wildcats are still alive for a 10-win season and a Jan. 1 bowl. They can win their final two games, and after last week's rout of Vanderbilt the 'Cats are feeling pretty good about its chances.

Kentucky features sophomore Benny Snell. He is a 223-pound bruiser who has run for 1,013 yards and 15 scores. That ties Auburn's Kerryon Johnson for tops in the SEC.

Sports Traditions – Where do they come from?

Here you are watching your favorite NFL team defeat their opponent. At the end of the game you see the players dumping a cooler full of Gatorade on the head of their coach.  You have seen it before and know that you will see it again.  You know that it is an NFL sports tradition but your mind is still going, WTF.  It’s freezing cold out on the field; if I was the coach I would be pretty upset.

Pele trading jerseySports traditions are a big part of the game.  In sports, they help the team and the fans feel like they are part of something bigger than they are.  It is a way to bring unity behind a sport, a city and a team.

Sports traditions are really not that much different from other traditions.  Much like other traditions like giving roses only to signify your love for someone on Valentine’s day.  Roses are given because they are a universal symbol of love and affection that go back to Greek and Roman iconography.

Traditions are never fully set in stone and can change as the years go by.  For example, during the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, people eat a traditional meal that has a turkey as its center piece with family and friends.  As the years went by, watching college football became part of the tradition.

They are many sports traditions out there that often make people scratch their heads in wonder.  This is why we are happy to present the best history and reason behind some of the many sports traditions out there.

Sports Traditions Meaning and History

Sports Tradition of Exchanging Jerseys in Soccer

Everyone who has ever watched a soccer game has seen the players exchange jersey at the end of a match.  This is a tradition that goes back to 1931 when France beat England for the first time in an international match.

Much like an invading barbarian hoard, looting a village for souvenirs and trophies, the French team asked the English team if they could keep their jerseys as a memento of their win.  The English team agreed to the request and this became the first time on record that footballers exchanged jerseys.

However, the jersey exchange did not become a tradition until the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland when West Germany defeated Hungary 3-2.

Since then, every World Cup and major international match has seen the traditional exchange of the Jersey.  Today, the exchanging of the jersey is a way for footballers to show respect to each other.  For the teams, it stands a symbol of unity and friendship between them.

Bonus fact: It is said that Pele had multiple jerseys at hand to give to members of the opposing team at the end of a match.

Detroit fans tossing the Octopus

Hockey fans have a tradition to throw thing on the hockey ring after a game.  One of the older “throw something on the ice” tradition is the tossing of the Octopus by Detroit Red Wings fans.

It all began in the 1952 playoffs to win the Stanley Cup.  During that time, an NHL team played two best-of-seven-series to win the trophy.  Pete and Jerry Cusimano who owned a market in Detroit threw an octopus in the ring to symbolize the number of playoff wins necessary for Detroit to win the Stanley Cup.

The Red Wings won that match and went on to defeat Toronto and Montreal and eventually won the 1952 NHL Championship.

We all know that athletes and sports fans are very superstitious people and since they won the Stanley Cup in 1952, the tradition persisted with each passing year.  Today, this tradition has such a strong foothold for Red Wings fans that they have actually developed a set of  “Etiquette” for throwing the octopus on the ring.

The Gatorade Shower Sports Tradition

Compared to other sports traditions, this is one is considered fairly new.  The iconic image of the smiling coach after winning a game being suddenly drenched by ice cold Gatorade is a classic in the NFL.

According to legends, Jim Burt, a former Giant’s nose-tackle , is the one that started it all. It was when his team defeated Washington in 1984.  According to several sources, Giants coach Bill Parcells had been riding Burt pretty hard that week.  At the end of the game, Burt  said to his teammates, “Parcells is such a prick. Let's get him!”

This was of course all said for fun and games. In the end, Parcell ended up covered in Gatorade and his reaction was priceless.  Instead of being angry he just smiled .

According to the best sports betting software company, the dumping of the Gatorade, did not catch on until Super Bowl XXI in 1985.  After the New York Giants defeated the Denver Broncos for the Super Bowl ring, Parcell was once again drenched with Gatorade.  As any good coach in the NFL, Parcell was superstitious and decided that in order to keep winning, the tradition had to continue.

Today, this tradition has spread beyond the NFL and you will see winning teams pouring sports drinks over their coach after a victory.

Thursday Night Football: Steelers Host the Titans

Pittsburgh Steelers Football

Steelers and Titans Both On a Roll

The Tennessee Titans and the Pittsburgh Steelers meet on Thursday Night Football at Heinz Field. NBC Sports has the telecast and kick-off is scheduled for 8:25 pm EST.

The Steelers and Titans are both on Four-game winning streaks going into tonights nationally telecast game.

Oddsmakers opened the Steelers as -7-point favorites versus the Titans, while the game's total opened at 43.5. The line has held steady, but the total is up to 44.5.

Pittsburgh has built a three-game lead over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North. They aims for a fourth consecutive playoff appearance. The Steelers are 2-1 at home this season.

Ben Roethlisberger has 2,298 yards, 12 TDs and 10 INTs on the season. He could climb even higher up the all-time record books with a strong performance. The QB ranks No. 9 in NFL history with 49,112 passing yards. He needs 214 yards to pass Warren Moon (49,325 yards) for No. 8 on the list.

Running back Le'Veon Bell has 1,091 yards from scrimmage (840 rushing, 251 receiving). He leads the NFL entering Week 11. Pro Bowl wide receiver Antonio Brown has 60 receptions, 882 yards, and three TDs.

JuJu Smith-Schuster has 29 receptions, 521 yards, and five TDs. He has the ability to find the end zone on any given play. Smith-Schuster has caught a touchdown pass in each of his last three games and will try to stretch it to four on Thursday.

Titans in Battle with Jags in AFC South

Tennessee is even with the Jacksonville Jaguars atop the AFC South. A road victory would significantly boost the Titans' chances of snapping an eight-season playoff drought. Tennessee is 2-2 on the road this season as it prepares for a game on three days' rest.

A slew of injuries, along with a condensed practice schedule, will add to Tennessee's challenge. Marcus Mariota is battling ankle and shoulder injuries. He is expected to play through the pain. The third-year leader never has faced the Steelers.

If Mariota is limited, the Titans could lean on a two-headed rushing attack. The tandem features DeMarco Murray with 433 yards and four TDs. Derrick Henry chips in 409 yards with three TDs. Wideout Rishard Matthews has 36 receptions, 513 yards, and two TDs. He offers the most reliable option downfield in the passing game.

New Jersey Devils vs. Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday

Maple Leafs Hockey

Maple Leafs Look to Keep Solid Start Rolling

The Toronto Maple Leafs (12-7 SU, 9-10 ATS) are waiting to hear if their star centre Auston Matthews will suit up Thursday. They host the surging New Jersey Devils. Matthews has been dealing with an upper body injury since November 6. Despite his absence, the Leafs have won all four games they’ve played without their leading scorer.

Toronto will need all the offensive support they can get on Thursday. The  Devils ranks fifth in goals scored per game (3.47). Oddsmakers have the Maple Leafs as -160-moneyline favorites. The total is at 6.

The Devils have surprised the hockey world through the first 17 games of the season. They’re tied for third in the league with 24 points and rank fourth in goals scored (61). They’ve missed the playoffs in each of their previous five seasons. The team seemed to be on the verge of a total rebuild at the end of 2016.

Instead, LW Taylor Hall (6 goals, 13 assists) has grabbed the role of elite point producer by the horns. First overall draft pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, Nico Hischier (3 goals, 11 assists), has lived up to expectations thus far.

The result has been a youthful Devils’ squad. They feature team speed that few can match in the league. With C Travis Zajac likely to return for Thursday’s game against the Leafs. An already lethal offense is about to become even more dangerous.
