AFC Championship: Patriots Host Upstart Jags

2018 AFC Championship

Brady Injury to Affect AFC Championship Play?

The fans at Gillette Stadium will see the 2018 AFC Championship Game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New England Patriots when they take their seats on Sunday. The game is being broadcast by CBS and kickoff is set for a few minutes after 3:30 pm EST.

Oddsmakers opened the Patriots as -9.5-point favorites versus the Jaguars, while the game's total opened at 46. The line now shows the Patriots as 7.5-point favorites. The total has dropped to 45.5.

The line dropped when Tom Brady skipped his Wednesday media to meet with team medical personnel over a right hand injury. He then did not practice on Thursday because of the injury. His hand was sewn up with four stitches.

It was released this morning he hopes to play without a glove on his throwing hand this afternoon.

Brady is headed for his seventh straight AFC title game and 12th overall. He also called the upstart Jaguars "the toughest" team the top-seeded Patriots have faced all season.

The Patriots have gone 3-3 in the six straight title game appearances. They lost twice to the Denver Broncos and once to the Baltimore Ravens. Most people expected a battle with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Jags flipped the script and come into this game as decided underdogs.

Patriots Ready to Defend AFC Championship

New England was a 35-14 winner in its AFC Divisional Round matchup at home against the Tennessee Titans. They covered the -13.5-point spread as favorites, while the total score of 49 sent OVER bettors to the payout window.

Brady captured his 26th postseason victory last week. He also recorded his 13th 300-yard postseason passing game in the postseason. He extended his NFL record for both.  Brady also broke a tie with Joe Montana to become the all-time leader with 10 three-TD playoff games.

The Patriots are seeking the sixth Super Bowl crown of the Brady/Bill Belichick Era.

Jags Depend on Ground Game and Defense in AFC Championship Game

Jacksonville won its last outing, a 45-42 result against the Pittsburgh Steelers AFC Divisional Round matchup. The Jaguars covered in that game as a +7-point underdog, while the 87 combined points took the game OVER the total.

The Jags are trying to become only the third team to lead the league in rushing and win the championship. They would be the first since the 1985 Chicago Bears.

A huge difference has been Tom Coughlin. He returned to the organization he helped build as the first coach of the expansion team in 1995. Coughlin was hired as Jacksonville's vice president of football operations. He won a pair of Super Bowl titles as head coach of the New York Giants.

Boxing Odds: Spence vs. Peterson

Spence vs. Peterson

Spence vs. Peterson Battle on Showtime Boxing

The IBF World Welterweight title will be on the line this Saturday (9 PM ET, SHO) when reigning champion Errol Spence takes on Lamont Peterson at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Spence is a heavy –3500 favorite at press time after opening at –2250; Peterson, previously a two-time champ at welterweight and light welterweight, has fallen from +950 to +1200.

It’s been a meteoric rise to the top for Spence (22-0, 19 KOs). The former Golden Gloves champion failed to medal at the 2012 London Olympics, but he’s encountered little resistance since turning pro, beating the likes of Chris Algieri and Leonard Bundu before taking the IBF strap off Kell Brook (+124) in May – in Brook’s hometown of Sheffield, England.

Peterson (35-3-1, 17 KOs) vacated the WBA Regular Welterweight title in October so that he could fight Spence this Saturday. He’s six years older than Spence at age 33, but roughly the same size, and also a former Golden Gloves champion. Peterson has fought some of the best boxers in the business; he defeated Amir Khan for the WBA Super and IBF versions of the light welterweight title in 2011, one year after fighting Victor Ortiz to a controversial draw.

Harden and Rockets Host the Warriors

Houston Rockets Basketball

Rockets and Warriors on Primetime on ABC

The Golden State Warriors will be trying to extend a winning streak on Saturday when they take on the Houston Rockets at Toyota Center. The game will be the first in Saturday Night Primetime for ABC Sports. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 pm EST.

This will be James Harden's second game back from injury issues for the past month.

Oddsmakers opened the Warriors as -3.5-point favorites versus the Rockets, while the game's total opened at 234. The line has held pretty steady, but the total has crept up to 235.

Rockets Almost at Full Strength

The Rockets were a 116-98 winner in their most recent outing at home against the Minnesota Timberwolves. They covered the -5.5-point spread as favorites, while the total score (214) made winners of UNDER bettors.

James Harden, Chris Paul and Eric Gordon proved to the league what has been missing in Houston for the last month. The Rockets who have beev inundated by injuries throughout the first half of this season showed what they can do, FINALLY.

Houston will still be without Trevor Ariza and Gerald Green. They were suspended for their roles in a postgame fight with the Clippers on Monday.

Harden didn't score at least 20 points for the first time this season. The rust showed as he posted 10 points on 3-of-15 shooting. He also had seven assists in 25 minutes. Gordon produced 30 points off the bench. Paul delivered another outstanding all-around effort with 19 points, six rebounds and seven assists.

The last time the Rockets had their rotation all together they beat the Charlotte Hornets. That was on Dec. 13 for their 11th consecutive win. They improved to 9-8 since on Thursday. By having survived games without Harden, Paul, and Luc Mbah a Moute.

Warriors Take 14 Game Road Winning Streak Into Rockets Game

Last time out for Golden State, they were a 119-112 winner as they battled the Chicago Bulls on the road. The Warriors failed to cover in the matchup as a -8.5-point favorite, while 231 combined points moved the game UNDER for totals bettors.

The Warriors seem to test the Rockets like no other team in the league. Their 14-game road winning streak will offer a stiff challenge to a Rockets team looking to put things back together.

Golden State has won 24 of 28 games since its last road loss. It was a 108-91 setback at Oklahoma City on Nov. 22. The Warriors have dealt with their share of injuries. They have ranged from Stephen Curry to Draymond Green to Andre Iguodala to rookie Jordan Bell. Their overall talent allows them to weather injury storms.

Golden State would set a franchise record for consecutive road victories with a win tonight. They would complete a perfect five-game road trip.

Will Lebron Reach 30K as Cavs Host Thunder?

Lebron James

Lebron has Milestone in Reach Today

The Oklahoma City Thunder and the Cleveland Cavaliers will meet on Saturday afternoon at Quicken Loans Arena. It is the first of the NBA on Saturday afternoons during this season. Tip-off is set for 3:30 pm EST.

Oddsmakers opened the Cavaliers as -3.5-point favorites versus the Thunder, while the game's total opened at 219. Cleveland is not 3-point favorites and the total is now at 220.

Lebron James needs just 25 points to become the seventh NBA player to score 30,000 career points. It would be great for him if he could do it with Carmelo in the house as well as his best friend Dwyane Wade. The trio are the top of the great 2003 NBA Draft Class and vacation together regularly.

Lebron and the Cavs Look to Get Out of Funk

Cleveland was a 104-103 winner in its last match at home against the Orlando Magic. They failed to cover the -11.5-point spread as favorites, while the total score of 207 sent UNDER bettors to the payout window.

The Cavs snapped a four-game losing streak by beating Orlando 104-103 on Thursday. They'd lost eight of their last 10 and nine of 12 before edging past the Magic.

Cleveland has gone to three straight NBA Finals. Now the Cavs are third in the East, six games behind the Boston Celtics. That expected 4th straight finals is looking grim.

Thunder Playing Better after Bad Start

Oklahoma City was a 114-90 winner in its last match at home against the Los Angeles Lakers. They covered the -9.5-point spread as favorites, while the total score of 204 sent UNDER bettors to the payout window.

The Thunder have won three straight games. They are now 25-20 after starting the year 4-7. Oklahoma City had the league's MVP last year in Russell Westbrook. They went out and added to its roster by trading for Paul George and Anthony during the offseason.

None of the trio were voted to start in next month's All-Star Game. Westbrook is having another outstanding season with averages of 24.8 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 9.9 assists. George is averaging 20.4 points and 5.5 rebounds. Then you have Anthony chipping in 17.6 points per game and 15.6 shots per game. Those are career lows.
