Sweet 16 : Texas A&M vs. Michigan - Preview and Prediction

The Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament is here. The Michigan Wolverines have become better and better with age. They have literally grown up right before our very eyes. The transformation has been stunning. Don’t misunderstand, they are not blowing opponents away.

They are doing just enough to get the win. That is what matters in the NCAA Tournament; one and done.

This tournament is win or go home, give it everything or go home, and so far that’s exactly what Michigan’s opponents are doing. They are going home. What’s more impressive is the run Michigan is on. The way they beat Purdue in the Big 10 Tournament and the heart they are playing with.

This team is for real and they have found some serious defense to go with.

Texas A&M has advanced to the Sweet 16 on sheer attitude and literally, with a chip on their shoulder. Getting past the defending champion Tar Heels was a very big deal. Possibly a bigger deal then they are getting credit for. Let’s take it a step further and say this was the biggest win in program history.

This is their second trip to the Sweet 16 in two years. Never with a win like the one against the Tar Heels.

"It means a lot here in my senior year," Tonny Trocha-Morelos said." I wanted to do something with the young guys and it's a great feeling. I talked to the freshmen -- there's nothing better than winning a game in the NCAA Tournament. So it's a really good feeling to keep dancing."

T.J. Starks has broken out for the Aggies. As the season has progressed, he has become their top scorer and go to guy.

"I'm just trying to get us a win every game, that is what I'm here for," Starks said. "I got recruited to help us win so that's all I'm trying to do."

Get in while there are great player bonuses available. Now is definitely the time and the bookies are literally giving money away.

Michigan has come into their ow. They come into the Sweet 16 as the highest seed in the left side of the bracket. Four players scored in double figure in the second round victory. They are playing as a unit and gelling at the right time. They will be dangerous going forward.

"I was thinking about how many great moments I've had in the past three years here, and this one is definitely up there, chasing Jordan Poole around the court -- who would have thought," Moritz Wagner said. "The way we played and having this outcome, very proud of this team. And very, very happy."

"We're doing some things that (are uncharacteristic), we've got to address them and get better at them," Michigan coach John Beilein said after Saturday's win.

"We've only lost seven games. But in those seven losses we did things that just don't make sense, they're not characteristic. We got into foul trouble again (Saturday), had some bad turnovers. We've got to shake out some of those things and get better."

Prediction: Michigan 81 Texas A&M 74

NIT Quarterfinals: Oklahoma State Hosts Western Kentucky

NIT Quarterfinals

Hilltoppers Look to Take Down Another High Seed in NIT Quarterfinals

The NIT Quarterfinals are under way. The 4th-seeded Western Kentucky Hilltoppers and the 2nd-seeded Oklahoma State Cowboys meet on Wednesday at Gallagher-Iba Arena. Tip-off is set for 9 pm EST. ESPN2 will have the coverage.

Oddsmakers opened the Cowboys as -5.5-point favorites versus the Hilltoppers, while the game's total opened at 147.5. The line now is Oklahoma State -6.5 and the total has risen to 149.5.

The Cowboys dropped 14 games this season. That number is misleading as 12 were against NCAA Tournament qualifiers. They come into Wednesday night having won five of six and playing well.

Jeffrey Carroll scored 26 points against Stanford to advance. He had a career-high five threes as well. The score was 71-65 on Monday. Just two players average in double-figures for the Cowboys. They make up for it in depth. The team has six average at least 8.2 points. Five players are 6-foot-6 or taller.

The Cowboys have exceeded oddsmakers' expectations; they're on a 6-2 ATS run.

NIT Quarterfinals Have a Underrated WKU Team

WKU was even more impressive in its quarterfinals win.  Justin Johnson scored 23 points in the Hilltoppers' 79-75 win at USC. The Hilltoppers went 4-2 against NCAA Tournament teams this season. Those wins include a four-point win over 2-seed Purdue.

Their RPI of 39 was the fifth-best among teams that didn't get invited to the Big Dance.

Western Kentucky has been one of the nation's most reliable teams against the spread. They have done 22-12 this season. It's been an underdog just seven times all season. They are 6-1 ATS in those games.

Spurs Host the Wizards Wednesday Night

Spurs Basketball

Spurs Looking for Longest Win Streak of Season

The Washington Wizards and the San Antonio Spurs meet on Wednesday at AT&T Center. ESPN will have the telecast and tip-off is set for 9:30 pm EST.

Oddsmakers opened the Spurs as -6-point favorites versus the Wizards, while the game's total opened at 204.5. The line is still at Spurs -6, but the total has dropped to 202.

The Spurs have won four straight games. In a tough regular season, that matches their longest streak of the season. The first was Dec. 4-9. San Antonio's latest win was Monday in an 89-75 win over injury-depleted Golden State.

LaMarcus Aldridge poured in 33 points and took 12 rebounds for the Spurs.

The Warriors were without Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson. They all missed the game with injuries. Golden State even lost its fourth All-Star, Draymond Green, to a pelvic contusion in the first half.

Aldridge scored 19 of his points in the final quarter. He hit 7 of 10 field-goal attempts and went 5 for 5 from the free-throw line. Aldridge also had six rebounds, one steal and one block in the final quarter.

With the win, San Antonio moved into fifth place in the Western Conference standings. With 13 games to play there is plenty to be decided between now and the middle of April.

The Spurs had lost 11 of 15 games, where they gave up more than 100 points in each loss. San Antonio has held opponents under the century mark in three of its last four games.

Wizards Coming off Big Wins in Boston & Indiana

Washington heads to San Antonio on a two-game win streak. The wins included an overtime game in Boston on March 14 and Saturday's 109-102 victory over Indiana. Bradley Beal scored 19 points to lead the Wizards in that victory. Marcin Gortat added 18, as Washington claimed the head-to-head tiebreaker with Indiana.

Washington continues to play well without star guard John Wall. He is out indefinitely after knee surgery at the end of January. It will begin play Wednesday in fourth place in the Eastern Conference. They are just a half-game behind third-place Cleveland.

The Wizards have played as a team more since Wall's injury. They are maximizing their assist percentage over the past 22 games. Washington has been assisting on 69.2 percent of its made field goals. That is the highest percentage in the league.

Washington is averaging 28.5 assists per game since Jan. 27. Again that is the most in the league.

Raptors Seek Statement Win in Cleveland

Toronto Raptors Basketball

Raptors Still Underdogs in East Despite Best Record

The Toronto Raptors (53-18 SU, 40-31 ATS) have the best record in the Eastern Conference. Oddsmakers still have the Cleveland Cavaliers (41-29 SU, 23-46-1 ATS) are +125 favorites to win the East and return to a fourth-straight NBA Finals.

They’ll meet Wednesday night in Cleveland at 7 PM ET on ESPN. Oddsmakers have the Cavaliers as 2-point favorites. The total is at 226.

Bet on basketball at Bovada and get a free 50% bonus.

This is a rare opportunity for the Raptors to show their stuff to a national US audience, but the situation isn’t ideal. Although the Cavaliers are just 6-7 SU and 4-9 ATS since the All-Star break, they’ll have a day of rest before Wednesday’s game, while Toronto will visit the Orlando Magic on Tuesday.

The Cavs are a more talented team than they were before shuffling their roster at the NBA trade deadline. They’re still not getting the results they need from PG George Hill and SG Rodney Hood.

They’re also having some serious injury problems right now. The team has six players listed as out or day-to-day. This is including the best of their newcomers, PF Larry Nance Jr. He has missed the last two games with a tight right hamstring.

PF Kevin Love (broken hand) isn’t expected to return until the following game on Friday against the Phoenix Suns.

Trail Blazers are Red Hot

The Houston Rockets look to be rolling towards the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference, winning 26 of their last 28 games. On Tuesday, they’ll visit the Portland Trail Blazers, who have won 13 straight games.

Oddsmakers have the Rockets listed as 5-point favorites. The total is at 218.

On Sunday, the Rockets beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 129-120 to move to 56-14 on the season. James Harden put up 34 points, 12 assists and four rebounds for the Rockets. He probably has the MVP award clinched after coming so close over the last two seasons.

The Rockets now hold a three-game lead over the Golden State Warriors for the top spot in the West.

Also on Sunday, the Trail Blazers beat the Los Angeles Clippers 122-109 on the road. They’re now 44-26 after 13 straight wins. Trail Blazers PG Damian Lillard had 23 points and two assists, and SG CJ McCollum had 21 points and three assists.

The Rockets are 6-4 SU and 4-6 ATS in their last 10 meetings with the Trail Blazers, who are 0-2 SU and 1-1 ATS this season against Houston. Both meetings have gone over the posted total. Tip-off is 10:30 PM ET.
