Cubs-Cardinals on Sunday Night Baseball

St. Louis Cardinals Baseball

Cubs and Cardinals Chasing Brewers in NL Central

The Route 66 Rivalry resumes this Sunday. The Chicago Cubs visit the St. Louis Cardinals in the finale of a three-game set at Busch Stadium. ESPN has the coverage beginning at 8 PM ET.

Southpaw Jose Quintana (4.09 ERA) is taking the mound for the Cubs. Rookie right-hander Jack Flaherty is on the hill for the Cardinals (2.96 ERA).

Oddsmakers have the Cubs as -115 moneyline favorites. The total is sitting at 8.5.

Bet on baseball at Bovada and get a free 50% bonus.

It’s been a good start to the 2018 campaign for both teams. The Cubs (40-27, +1.44 betting units) and the Cardinals (36-32, minus-4.20 betting units) have been playing well as of late.

They find themselves  trailing the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the National League Central. The Cubs are 0.5 games back and the Cards are 5 games out.

The Cubs have the best hitting in baseball thus far, but their pitching has been substandard; St. Louis is less polarized, with decent results on both sides of the equation.

Quintana has definitely gotten by with a little help from his friends. The North Siders are 9-4 in his 13 starts for 1.97 units in profit. Thos numbers are inflated because they’ve given him 6.31 runs of support per game. The Cards, on the other hand, are 4-4 behind Flaherty for a loss of 1.20 units. They are providing just 4.25 runs per game and driving the Under to a 5-2-1 record.

Stampeders and Tiger-Cats Open 2018 CFL Season

Stampeders Football

Stampeders and TiCats Look to Start Strong

The fans at McMahon Stadium will be treated to a game between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the Calgary Stampeders when they take their seats on Saturday. Both teams seem to be moving in the right direction to start the 2018 season.

The Tiger-Cats are looking to pick up where they left off at the end of last year. They dropped their first eight games of 2017. The Tabbies then found new life after a coaching change saw June Jones take over the team. June Jones style of offense is fun to watch.

Hamilton finished the second half of the season with a winning 6-4 record. They could not overcome their disappointing start and  missed the playoffs. This season expectations are they will be better.

Jones Has the Offense Humming for the TiCats

The Ticats have placed their trust in Jeremiah Masoli. He enters the season as the undisputed number one quarterback. The 29-year-old has been part of the Black and Gold for the past five years. This is the first time he is starting the season as the definitive starter.

Masoli took over the reins midway through last year. His position as the starter was solidified when the Ticats traded former franchise quarterback Zach Collaros to the Saskatchewan Roughriders during the off season.

If Masoli falters they have a high-profile pivot is waiting in the wings. Former Heisman trophy winner Johnny Manziel impressed in the preseason. Jones has never wavered from Masoli as his number one. YET.

Masoli has a wealth of talent when it comes to targets. Jalen Saunders, Luke Tasker, and Brandon Banks are all coming off of 1000-yard seasons for the Black and Gold. Nikita Whitlock gets the nod at running back for Week 1. Starter Alex Green is out for two weeks while still recovering from a hand injury.

Stampeders Have High Expectations After Losing Grey Cup Game

Last year’s Grey Cup finalists have lost some key players but are still a force to be reckoned with in the West.

The biggest change on defense for the Stamps is the absence of last year’s sack leader Charleston Hughes. He was traded during the offseason.

The Stamps secondary received a boost with the addition of Emanuel Davis. His first game in the Red and White just happens to be against his former squad.

The Stamps defense is anchored by last year’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player, Alex Singleton. In his 2nd season the 24-year-old racked up an astounding 123 tackles and shows on signs of slowing down.

Bo Levi Mitchell enters his seventh season under center for the Calgary. The 2016 CFL’s Most Outstanding Player will be without his top target from last year. Marquay McDaniel was releases by the team in February.  Jerome Messam, who racked up over 1,000 rushing yards last season, is also gone.

The young wideout duo of Marken Michel and DaVaris Daniels, along with slotback Kamar Jorden, round out a strong receiving core.

Ever since BetPhoenix.ag went in business in 2006, they have always had an impressive looking website. Over the years, their website has changed to keep up with the time.  However, no matter the changes, they always give players an attractive and easy to use sports betting software.

After using their sportsbook for a several years, we can say with confidence that they are one of the best. This is because they have one of the most impressive numbers of betting options on the market. In addition, the sports betting interface is simple and easy to use whether you use the mobile or PC platform.

One of their best features is their live in-game betting because they offer many more options than their competition. In addition, we took a tour of their live dealer casino and were impressed by the quality of the video and game play.

To further test out their sportsbook services, we tried out hand at their racebook. Our verdict is that is it’s both easy to use and offers odds from several racetracks around the world.

Braves Host Padres Saturday Afternoon

Atlanta Braves

Newcomb Looks to Get Back on Track for Braves

The San Diego Padres and the Atlanta Braves will meet in game 3 of their 4 game series on Saturday when they battle at SunTrust Park.

TV: 5:10 p.m. EST, FS San Diego, FS South (Stlanta)

Pitching Matchup: Padres RH Jordan Lyles (2-3, 4.83 era) vs. Braves LH Sean Newcomb (7-2, 2.92).

Both Newcomb and Lyles are former first-round draft choices.

Sean Newcomb hadn't lost since his opening start of the season until falling to the Dodgers last Sunday. It ended a six-game winning streak.

The Padres ended an eight-game losing streak in Atlanta on Friday night. They beat the National League East-leading Braves 7-3. It was their 12th victory in the past 17 games.

Oddsmakers opened the Braves as -185-moneyline favorites versus the Padres, while the game's total opened at 8.5. The line has held pretty steady.

Braves are 3-1 on Current Homestand

Newcomb held the Padres to three singles in six scoreless innings at San Diego on June 5. It was in a 14-1 rout that was the only victory for the Braves in that three-game series.

Newcomb's performance was a near duplicate of his first major league victory last June in San Diego. The win gave him a 1.31 ERA during a seven-start stretch.

The 24-year-old gave up two first-pitch home runs against the Dodgers in his last starts. One was a three-run shot in the third inning. He allowed five runs in 5 1/3 innings of a 7-2 loss.

Freddie Freeman extended his hitting streak to nine games with a fifth-inning homer. It put Atlanta ahead 3-2. Freeman finished 1-for-3 with a walk to exit friday with a .342 batting average and 15 homers. That gives him six in his past nine games.

It was enough as the Braves fell to 3-1 on their homestand and 4-2 in their last 6.

Padres Are Playing at the Top of Their Game

Padres starter Jordan Lyles gave up eight runs in 4 1/3 innings as the Braves made things easy for Newcomb in San Diego. Tthe 27-year-old right-hander took another loss in his most recent start.

Lyles again allowed 11 hits with four runs in six innings against the Cardinals in St. Louis. The Cardinals had just three swings and misses on 102 pitches.

Lyles' rough stretch followed some impressive work in May. He was moved into the rotation from the bullpen. He took a perfect game into the eighth inning against the Colorado Rockies in his second start. Lyles ended up allowing a hit and a walk while striking out 10 in 7 1/3 innings.

Lyles has a 6.35 ERA in four games (three starts) against the Braves. The loss in San Diego last week his only decision.

Freddy Galvis tormented the Braves during his time with Phillies. The Padres shortstop comes into saturday's contest after collecting five hits in friday's 9-3 victory.

Galvis blasted a three-run homer in the seventh inning friday. That raised his career average against the braves to .284 with five homers and 30 rbis in 80 career games.

Nationals Visit Blue Jays for Interleague Series Opener

Toronto Blue Jays

Blue Jays Host Nationals Team Looking to Find Offense

The Toronto Blue Jays welcome the National League East-leading Washington Nationals to town this Friday. This follows three consecutive series against American League East teams. It could be a nice change of scenery if not for the Nats bats and pitching.

Both clubs have been inundated by injuries and have struggled with consistency of late. Both will look to get back on track during interleague play.

TV: 7:07 p.m. EST, MASN (Washington), Sportsnet (Toronto)

Oddsmakers have the Nationals as -134 moneyline favarites. The total is at 9.5.

Bet on baseball at Bovada and get a free 50% bonus.

Toronto has struggled to find any kind of consistency over the past month and a half. While they started the season well, they’ve slumped to several games below .500. They sit 15.5 games behind the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox.

Those struggles have been largely due to an ineffective and beat-up pitching staff. Toronto ranks 23rd in team ERA. Their starters rank last in registering quality starts (20). No team will win consistently with numbers like that.

Washington, on the other hand, has an embarrassment of riches at the pitching position. They are led by starter Max Scherzer. The defending National League Cy Young winner leads the league in strikeouts (142) and ranks fourth in ERA (2.00).

He’s the clear Ace of a Nationals’ staff that ranks third in the Majors in ERA, but the Nats may open the series without Stephen Strasburg, who is currently on the 10-day DL with shoulder inflammation. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 PM ET.

Argos and Roughriders Open their 2018 CFL Season

Roughriders Football

Argos Start Defense of CFL Title Against Roughriders

The Toronto Argonauts and the Saskatchewan Roughriders open their 2018 CFL Season at Mosaic Stadium on Friday. The reigning Grey Cup Champ, Argos, begin defending their title tonight. This a rematch of last year’s Eastern Final at new Mosaic Stadium in Regina.

The bitter defeat from November still lingers for Roughriders players and fans. It was a devastating loss at the hands of the Argos. Saskatchewan was less than three minutes away from a Grey Cup berth.

Then future hall of famer Ricky Ray worked his magic. He orchestrated a late touchdown drive that pulled the Argos ahead. The rest is history as Toronto went on the stun the Calgary Stampeders in the 105th Grey Cup presented by Shaw. The Argos claimed their 17th CFL title.

Oddsmakers have the Argos favored by 2.5 points. The total is at 49.5. Kickoff is at 9 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN, RDS and ESPN2.

Can Argos Trestman Work Magic Again?

Marc Trestman and Jim Popp came in last year after Head Coach Scott Malinovich left for the NFL right before the season. In just one season, they turned the Double Blue from worst to first in the CFL. The Argos are considered by many as the top team in the East heading into the 2018 season.

The Argos’ core group from last years' squad is intact. Ray will lead the charge on offense. He is flanked by last year’s Most Outstanding Rookie James Wilder Jr. at running back, and the seemingly ageless S.J. Green as a top target.

The Argos bolstered their already-strong defense with some strong additions. T.J. Heath is back with the Boatmen after the team traded him two seasons ago to Winnipeg. Ex-BC Lion Ronnie Yell will be making his Argos debut at cornerback on Friday.

Roughriders Have Questions Heading into Week One

The biggest question heading into Week 1 for the Riders is at quarterback. Will it be Zach Collaros or Brandon Bridge taking the snaps against the Argos?

Collaros is listed as the starter on the team’s depth chart, there is still no definitive answer.

It’s expected that Collaros will make his first start as a Rider. The veteran pivot is back to wearing his old number 17. He is looking to bounce back after a pair of disappointing seasons in Hamilton. The 29-year-old suffered a devastating knee injury back in 2015. He was on pace to be named Most Outstanding Player.

Collaros will have two of the top receivers in the league with Carter and Roosevelt at his disposal. Saskatchewan’s offense is a force to reckoned with. Riderville was shocked by the release of three veteran receivers last week.

Many Changes to the Roughriders Offense

Rob Bagg, Bakari Grant, and Chad Owens were sent packing just days before the start of the season. Bagg was a favorite in Riderville and a mainstay for almost a decade. Grant was coming off of a plus 1000-yard season. Owens brought a wealth of knowledge to the locker room.

The Riders also released offensive guard Travis Bond. Jarvis Harrison beat him out for the starting job. The Riders’ O-line will be under the microscope on Friday with the changes and some uneven preseason play.

Despite some tough cuts on offense, the Riders appear stronger on both sides of the ball. New addition Jerome Messam will look to make a statement in his return to Saskatchewan. He previously played for  them in 2014 and 2015. The 33-year-old running back is coming off of his third 1000-yard season.

On defense the Riders have added last year’s sack leader and four-time CFL All-Star Charleston Hughes. The one-two punch of Hughes and Willie Jefferson will be imposing. With the duo on opposite sides of the defensive line could cause nightmares for opposing quarterbacks.

They hope it starts with Ricky Ray, who’s not known for his foot speed.
