White Sox Host the Blue Jays Friday Night

White Sox Baseball

Stroman Looks to Build on Recent Success Against White Sox

The Toronto Blue Jays will be on the road this weekend when they visit the Chicago White Sox for a three-game series. Both teams are essentially out of the playoff chase. Players may be auditioning for other teams.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, NBCS Chicago-Plus, Sportsnet, TVAS (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Marcus Stroman (3-7, 5.42 ERA) vs. White Sox RH Reynaldo López (4-8, 4.13)

ODDS: Blue Jays are listed as -127-moneyline favorites. The Total is 9u -115.

Sitting nine games under .500, Toronto traded 10-game winner J.A. Happ to the New York Yankees. They also shipped right-hander reliever Seunghwan Oh to Colorado. More may be on the way.

The White Sox traded closer Joakim Soria to Milwaukee for two pitching prospects.

Blue Jays fans will have something to cheer about. Starter Marcus Stroman appears to be rounding into form and will be on the mound for the opener.

There’s no question that this season has been a challenging one for Stroman. He started the year slowly and spent time on the disabled list with shoulder fatigue early on. When Jays fans saw that old swagger return to Stroman’s game in his last start they were thrilled.

He owns a 1-3 record and 6.00 ERA in six career starts against the White Sox.

Optimists finally had something to cheer about. The righty went seven innings and surrendered only one run in his second quality start in three games. He’ll look to build on that momentum against the lowly White Sox.

One bright part of the Blue Jays' future is second baseman Lourdes Gurriel Jr.. He is the first rookie in history with eight straight multiple-hit games. Gurriel is 17-for-35 during the torrid eight-game stretch.

White Sox Send One of Few Bright Spots to Mound

Chicago will send Reynaldo Lopez to the mound to face Toronto on Friday. The 24-year-old has been a bright spot in an otherwise abysmal season for Chicago. He’s second on the team in innings pitched to compliment staff ace James Shields.

Pitching for a team that has scored the fifth fewest runs in the Majors isn’t going to result in many wins. Chicago will attempt to take advantage of home field and add a win to their record with Lopez at the helm.

Lopez has made one career start against the Blue Jays, allowing one run over six innings in his 2018 season debut.

Jose Abreu has hit safely in five straight games. He went deep twice Thursday and finished 7-for-16 with three homers and six RBIs against Los Angeles Angels. They split the four game set.

Abreu is 5-for-16 with a homer off Stroman.

Blue Jays Host Twins as Trade Deadline Approaches

Toronto Blue Jays

Santana Makes Season Debut Against Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays (46-54, -8.00 betting units) are undefeated since the All-Star Game. With little hope of making the postseason, they’ll likely make some moves before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. Wednesday they face the Minnesota Twins (46-53, -7.73 units).

TV: 4:07 p.m. ET, FS North (Minnesota), Sportsnet (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Ervin Santana (2017: 16-8, 3.28 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Sam Gaviglio (2-3, 4.59)

ODDS: Toronto is listed as a -113-moneyline favorite. The total is sitting at 9.5.

Ervin Santana has traveled a winding road in his bid to return from a lengthy absence. This was due to surgery to remove calcium deposits from his right middle finger in February. The veteran right-hander will be activated off the disabled list to make his season debut on Wednesday.

Bet on baseball at Bovada and get a free 50% bonus.

Sam Gaviglio is getting the nod for Toronto. The Jays are 6-6 behind Gaviglio this year for a +0.76 units against the MLB betting lines. Gaviglio saw his winless skid reach 10 outings on Friday. He allowed four runs on seven hits over a career-high 7 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Orioles.

Gaviglio was taken deep on two occasions versus Baltimore and 12 times in his last 11 outings. Joe Mauer is 3-for-5 in his career against Gaviglio. The hurler has limited the rest of the current crop of Twins to just a 3-for-28 performance at the plate.

Toronto has mustered just three runs in consecutive losses after erupting for 17 in a three-game sweep of Baltimore. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. carries a streak of seven straight multi-hit performances into Wednesday's series finale.

Twins Playing Well Since All-Star Break

Eduardo Escobar is riding a five-game hitting streak. He belted a three-run homer in Tuesday's 5-0 romp to improve to 4-for-7 with three extra-base hits and five RBIs in the series.

Santana (3.28 ERA last year) will make his 2018 season debut. The veteran made the AL All-Star squad for the second time last year. He led Minnesota to +4.07 units in earnings on a team record of 19-14.

Santana, owns a 6-7 mark with a 3.84 ERA in 19 career starts against Toronto. He has flustered Yangervis Solarte (1-for-15) and Kendrys Morales (4-for-19, four strikeouts).

Eddie Rosario has scored at least one run in 10 straight contests.

Sparks Hosts the Red Hot Dream in WNBA Action

Sparks WNBA Basketball

Sparks and Dream Have Top Two Defenses in WNBA

The Atlanta Dream and the Los Angeles Sparks will meet on Tuesday when they battle at STAPLES Center. This is a matchup of the No. 2 team in the WNBA vs. the No. 3 team.

The game will showcase two of the best defenses in the league. It will also have two of the best players in Candace Parker and Tiffany Hayes.

The second-place Dream (15-9) will be looking to stay ahead of the third-place Sparks. The Sparks (14-10) will be looking to make it two straight since losing to Indiana, the league's worst team.

Atlanta has won seven straight and is 8-2 in its past 10 games. Los Angeles is only 4-6.

The Sparks and Dream have played once this season. On June 12, Parker scored 19 and Nneka Ogwumike posted a double-double (18 points, 11 rebounds) in a 72-64 Los Angeles win.

Oddsmakers have the Sparks as 4-point favorites. The total is at 156.

Sparks Looking to Get Back on Track With Winning Streak

The Sparks were a 93-76 winner in their most recent outing on the road against the Sky. They covered the -3.5-point spread as favorites. The total score (169) made winners of OVER bettors.

Ogwumike did not dress in Los Angeles' win over Chicago. It was the second straight game she has missed. Defensive specialist Alana Beard also did not play because of groin injury. It's uncertain if either will be able to play Wednesday.

Odyssey Sims hobbled off the court in the waning moments and her status is in limbo as well.

The Sparks sit second in the league in defense, allowing 77.4 points per game. The Sparks average 79.8, eighth best in the WNBA.

Dream Look to Keep Solid Season Going

The Dream continued their improbable season on Sunday with an impressive 87-74 road win over Western Conference leader Seattle. They covered the +2.5-point spread as underdogs. The total score of 161 sent UNDER bettors to the payout window.

Elizabeth Williams scored a season-high 17 points to lead the Dream. All-Star Hayes and Angel McCoughtry added 16 points.

The turning point in the Dream's season might have come during the road trip that ended with the loss to the Sparks. The loss dropped Atlanta to 5-4. Since then Atlanta has gone 10-5 and is in the thick of playing for a first-round bye in the playoffs.

The Dream are third in the WNBA in defense at 78.9 points per game. The Dream average only 79.2 points per game, ninth best in the league.

Hayes led Atlanta to a 3-0 record last week. She ranked second in the conference in scoring at 18.0 points per game to go with 4.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.

Astros All-Star Cole Faces Anderson, Rockies on Tuesday

Colorado Rockies

Rockies Look to Stay Within Striking Distance in NL West

The Houston Astros will visit the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday in the most intriguing pitching matchup of the night. The Astros are on the verge of running away with the AL West. Colorado has to keep playing well to keep up with the streaking Dodgers in the NL.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston), AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Colorado).

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Gerrit Cole (10-2, 2.52 ERA) vs. Rockies LH Tyler Anderson (6-3, 3.72).

Odds: The Astros are -145 on the moneyline. The total is sitting at 10.

Cole is on Fire for the Astros

With a 2.52 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP, the All-Star Cole has been one of the best pitchers this season. Houston has won seven of his last nine starts overall. He has improved to 10-2 on the season over that span.

The veteran righty has been just as good on the road as he has been at home, going 6-1 with a 2.53 ERA in 10 road starts this season.

Cole was outstanding in his last start. He allowed one run, three hits and four walks while striking out eight in 5 2/3 innings of a 9-1 victory over Detroit. This was on on July 14,  and he reached 10 wins for the fifth time in his six major-league seasons.

The 27-year-old's strikeout total is fifth-best in baseball. He has yielded one earned run or fewer in four of his last five starts. Cole boasts a 0.98 WHIP this season.

Nolan Arenado is 5-for-11 with two home runs for the Rockies against Cole. The rest of the active Rockies are 8-for-48 versus Cole. He is 3-1 with a 2.49 ERA in four starts against them. This includes a victory in his only start at Coors Field in 2016 when he permitted two earned runs in six innings.

Alex Bregman (.282, 20 home runs, 66 RBIs), the MVP of the All-Star Game, has reached base safely in 25 straight contests. That is the longest active streak in the majors. He is hitting .333 during that stretch. Bregman had a 31-game on-base run earlier this season.

Rockies are 15-6 in Tough Stretch of MLB Season

Colorado will send Anderson to the mound Tuesday night. Despite having to overcome the difficulties of pitching at home at Coors Field, the veteran lefty is 6-3 with a 3.72 ERA this season. Anderson is just 2-3 with a 3.94 ERA in his 10 home starts this season.

However, it’s worth noting that Anderson has held opponents to two earned runs or less in each of his last four starts dating back to June 29.

Tuesday’s game will mark the first of four head-to-head meetings between the Rockies and Astros this season.

The Colorado Rockies have played a team with a winning record each game since June 26. They could continue to do so until Aug. 19th. That is a rough stretch.

Colorado has started the challenging stretch 15-6. They sit within striking distance of first place in the National League West and an NL wild-card spot.

The Astros have the highest road winning percentage in baseball at .694. Their 34 wins away from home are the second-most in the majors to Boston.
