Free NFL Preseason Week 1 Pick- Cleveland Browns at New York Giants

New York Giants

New York Giants Look to Put 2017 In Rear View Mirror

The 2017 NFL Season is thankfully over for the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns. They were the two worst teams in the NFL last season. They face one another in Week 1 of the 2018 preseason on Thursday night.  Cleveland is going on the road to play the New York Giants.

Game time from MetLife Stadium is set for 7 p.m. with the NFL Network carrying the game live. BetAnySports opened the Giants as 2.5-point home favorites with the total set at 34. The line is now Cleveland -1 and the total is at 35.

Cleveland failed to win a game last season at 0-16 straight-up. They were a costly 4-12 record against the spread. This followed a perfect 4-0 record SU and ATS in the preseason. That included a 10-6 victory against the Giants as a two-point underdog at home.

The closing total line in that game was 37.5 points.

Baker Mayfield Era Ready to Start in Cleveland?

It looks like the Browns will go with veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor as their starter for Week 1 of the regular season. Right now most eyes will be on Baker Mayfield. Especially tonight in NFL Preseason Week 1.

He was the first overall pick in this year’s draft. The former Oklahoma standout should see some substantial playing time in this game.

Another interesting addition through the draft was former Georgia running back Nick Chubb.

New York Giants are Ready to Move On

The Giants won 11 games in 2016 before plummeting to 3-13 SU last season. It was a rapid reversal of fortunes. New York went 7-9 ATS last season. The total stayed UNDER BetAnySports’ closing line in six of its last seven games of the 2017 regular season.

The Giants went 2-2 SU in the 2017 preseason with a 1-3 record ATS. The total was evenly split as well (2-2).

With the second overall pick in this year’s draft, new head coach Pat Shurmur decided to address the offense’s issues in the ground game. He selected former Penn State running back Saquon Barkley.

He should get a chance to show what he can do at the next level tonight. Eli Manning might see some action under center as well. The Giants are probably more interested in watching Davis Webb and Kyle Lauletta run the offense at quarterback.

Each of these teams is looking to quickly put the 2017 season in the rear view mirror. It is going take some time to turn things around. This should keep scoring to a minimum this Thursday night. Take the UNDER 35 on BetAnySports’ total line in this one.

Twins Mount Last-Ditch Effort Versus Indians

Cleveland Indians Baseball

Twins Looking to Keep Pace Against Indians

As expected, the defending AL Central champs from the Cleveland Indians (63-50, -13.51 betting units) are in very good shape to retain their division title. They’re not quite running away with it.

The Minnesota Twins (53-60, -7.11 units) still have a shot at overtaking the Tribe. Minnesota has to narrow the gap during their current four-game series at The Jake. It wraps up today at 1:10 PM ET.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, FS North (Minnesota), SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland).

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Jose Berrios (11-8, 3.51 ERA) vs. Indians RH Corey Kluber (14-6, 2.63).

ODDS: Indians -210-moneyline favorites. The total is at 7.5 -110.

Two-time and reigning AL Cy Young winner Corey Kluber will to start for the Tribe.

Kluber registered his first shutout of the season and the seventh of his career on Saturday. He held the Los Angeles Angels to three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts.

The 32-year-old has given up one run over 16 1/3 innings in his last two starts. After going winless in the previous three, this was a needed turnaround. Kluber is 9-6 with a 3.36 ERA in 21 career starts against the Twins.

The Tribe hope to give Kluber some improved bullpen support during this playoff drive. They added relievers Brad Hand (2.92 ERA) and Adam Cimber (3.42 ERA) at last week’s trade deadline. They also added CF Leonys Martin (.748 OPS).

Leonys Martin, who has gone 5-for-15 with two homers since being acquired from Detroit, sat out Wednesday due to illness.

Twins Have to Have Great Pitching Against Indians

Berrios is pitching very well in his second full season in the bigs. The Twins are up 1.63 units behind Barrios on a record of 13-10.

Berrios has posted four quality starts in his last six outings. This includes Saturday's turn in which he limited Kansas City to two runs over seven innings. He earned the victory.

The 24-year-has permitted fewer than three runs in seven of his last 11 outings. He has gone 5-3 with eight quality starts in that stretch. Berrios is 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA in two starts versus Cleveland this year.

Joe Mauer is 16-for-54 with two homers and five doubles versus Kluber.

Logan Forsythe is 9-for-20 with three RBIs during his six-game hitting streak after going 0-for-1 in his team debut on Aug. 1.

A score of birdie (1 under par) or better on a hole counts towards the birdie streak. For example:
  • Hole 1 : par 4 : score 3 = birdie

  • Hole 2 : par 3 : score 1 = eagle + hole in one

  • Hole 3 : par 5 : score 2 = double eagle

Golfer is awarded points for a 3 BIR STRK as they scored birdie or better on 3 holes in a row

Only one of the Birdie streaks can be awarded in a round.

For example:
  • Golfer gets 4 birdies in a row; they receive 4 BIR STRK points but will not receive 3 BIR STRK points.

  • Golfer gets 4 birdies in a row, then later in the round gets 3 birdies in a row. They would receive 4 BIR STRK points only.

In cases where a golfer starts on the back nine (hole #10), birdie streak would be awarded based on hole #10 being their first hole of the day. For example if they birdied physical holes #17, #18 and #1, that would count as a 3 BIR STRK.

Birdie streaks can be awarded for rounds that are played over more than 1 day. For example: Round 2 starts on Friday and is completed on Saturday. Birdie streaks can be won for Round 2 even though it was not played all on the same day.

Birdie streak points are awarded in addition to Per Hole Scoring.

Mike Foltynewicz (8-7, 3.04 ERA, 1.18 WHIP) gave up two earned runs on five hits (one home run) and one walk with five strikeouts across six innings in a 4-2 win against the Mets last Thursday.

Is Instant Replay Killing Professional Sports?

Instant Replay in Sports

By: The Frisco Kid

Is Instant Replay Killing Professional Sports?

Instant Replay and Professional Sports. I am at a crossroads. I’m a huge baseball fan, have been my whole life. I consider myself a baseball purist. Thinking about yesteryear and how baseball “was” is a major part of my day at times.

Major League Baseball is the oldest professional organization. It was founded in 1869. The National League and American League forming in 1876 and 1901 respectively. With the past in mind, is instant replay killing professional sports?

How to Bet On Baseball – Betting on the MLB Second Half

Baseball is at the top of my discussion. The reason is simply because baseball is the only game on TV as I write this. Replay issues are not specific to MLB.

The National Football League, the National Hockey League and to a lesser extent, the National Basketball Association all have their own issues that need to be dealt with.

Red Sox -The Best Bet Down the Stretch

This is a betting website, so I will also touch on ways instant replay effects sports bettors as well. Right now I’m getting straight into my biggest issue with replay in baseball.

Pace of play has been the most common source of contention with the MLB replay system. Talks of a “pitch clock” have been discussed. This would act much like a shot clock in the NBA.

You need to deliver the pitch before the clock runs out. The same way a basketball team needs to take a shot before their 24 seconds is up.

Using a Pick Service to Increase Win Percentage

Recently baseball stopped making pitchers throw 4 pitches on intentional walks. Now an intentional walk is awarded with the flash of four fingers.

Other rule changes, like limiting mound visits and inning break timer have been enforced. Instant replay is not only the biggest culprit for pace of play issues,. It’s slowing the game during critical situations that are effecting the outcome as well.

It was known that MLB teams had 30 seconds to decide whether or not they would challenge a play. The first 10 seconds was to get the umpire’s attention. The other 20 were to look at the play.

Well, it seems this 30 second rule has gone by the wayside. Up to 60 seconds are now being taken by teams to study a play frame-by-frame. Is this what instant replay was brought in for?

NFL Free Picks  - Take the Work Out of Handicapping

Players FOREVER have thought they were safe on close plays. That they made a terrific catch in the outfield. Then, only to watch after the game that he was in fact out at the base. The ball did skip off the ground before it made it into his glove.

Now, players just stay on the base and wave at the dugout. They give the new international sign to prompt his guys to look at it.

This is where my baseball purity comes into play. Umpires are making these calls in split seconds. When you calculate how fast some of these guys can run and how fast they can throw the ball the amount of called they miss is minuscule.

They are making bang-bang calls in high pressure situations, with hundreds of thousands of people watching.

Online Sportsbooks Will Not Only Survive, They Will Thrive

To fix this situation, teams should only get 10 seconds to decide. They should only get the same view as umps. What they saw with their own eyes from the same angle and perspective. Maybe how emphatically a player can convince his manager to challenge would provide some drama in and of itself.

I’d like to see the stats on that one. Don’t give a team’s replay booth time to study frame-by-frame. It’s too easy compared to how tough a job it is to be a Major League umpire.

Instant Replay has Issues in NHL and NFL

Hockey sees more replays than I would like to see. Offsides is a common replay. Sure, you’d like to see the linesmen get it right all the time. That’s sports, and sometimes not everything goes how you’d like it. That is what provides the drama we crave.

The replay numbers are up in the NFL too. This one will be a separate topic of it’s own very soon. Will we finally determine what a catch is this year?

I lost a big bet a last year when a touchdown was taken back. It was on a play when everyone in the room thought it was a catch. This is when replay leaves a bad taste in your mouth. When it seems the wrong decision was made after waiting 5 minutes to hear the call.

Momentum is a strong force in sports. It can be the difference in putting a team away and caving under pressure at the end. Instant replay simply cannot be used as a stall tactic when teams feel like they need a standing-eight count.

Betting Baseball Down the Stretch

This is a touchy subject, with large camps on both sides of this debate. Sure we want to get the call right, but there needs to be a line drawn somewhere so instant replay isn’t the primary factor determining a game’s outcome.

Red-Hot Athletics Host the Dodgers

Oakland Athletics

Athletics Going for 7th Straight

The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Oakland Athletics will meet on Tuesday at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. This is the first game in a two game series.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, NBCS California (Oakland), SportsNet Los Angeles

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Rich Hill (4-4, 3.63 ERA) vs. Athletics LH Sean Manaea (10-7, 3.38)

Oddsmakers opened the Dodgers as -105-moneyline favorites versus the Athletics, while the game's total opened at 7.5. The Dodgers are now -118-moneyliune favorites. The total is up to 8 -110.

Athletics Haven't Slowed Down Since the Break

The Oakland Athletics are the hottest team in baseball. They are making a surprising run at the Houston Astros, who sit atop the American League West. The Athletics will try to stay perfect on the home stand and stretch their winning streak to seven straight.

Oakland won the first six games of the homestand. They whipped the Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers like yard dogs. They won by a combined score of 33-7. They enter the week four games behind the Astros in the AL West.

Oakland is 11-7 in interleague play this season. They split a two-game series in April against the Dodgers.

Manaea has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his last 11 starts. He earned a win over Toronto last Wednesday by yielding one run and five hits across six innings. The 26-year-old is holding opponents to a .220 batting average. He is fifth in the AL with a 1.01 WHIP.

Manaea surrendered solo home runs to Chris Taylor and Corey Seager in five innings at Los Angeles on April 10 and was saddled with a loss.

Khris Davis homered in four of the last seven games to bring his season total to 31.

Dodgers in a Dog Fight Atop the NL West

The Dodgers enter the week tied for first in the NL West. They avoided a three-game sweep by the Astros. By doing so they did the Athletics a favor with a 3-2 victory over the Astros on Sunday.

Hill is thriving since the All-Star break. He has given up a total of two earned runs allowed in 19 innings spread over three starts. The 38-year-old added 21 strikeouts in that span. The crafty veteran won the first two starts before settling for a no-decision against Milwaukee on Wednesday.

Hill posted a 2.25 ERA in 14 starts for Oakland in 2016 before being traded to Los Angeles. He is 2-1 with a 3.09 ERA in seven road starts this season.

Yasiel Puig (right oblique) was held out of the lineup on Sunday and is day-to-day.
