NM State Aggies Host the Wyoming Cowboys

Wyoming Cowboys Athletics

Wyoming Cowboys are Loaded for 2018

The Wyoming Cowboys and the New Mexico State Aggies will both be looking to go 1-0 on the season. They meet at Aggie Memorial Stadium on Saturday night. ESPN2 has the coverage with kickoff set for 10 pm EST.

Oddsmakers opened the Cowboys as -6-point favorites versus the Aggies, while the game's total opened at 47.5. The line is now Wyoming -5 and the total is down to 46.

Tonight will be a huge indicator of what’s to come for both programs for the season.

New Mexico State is playing its first game again as an independent. The Sun Belt broke up with the program after last season. The Aggies are coming off a big bowl season with a ton of momentum. It might all crash with a thud without a strong first game at home against a tough Wyoming team.

The Cowboys should have one of the nation’s best Group of Five defenses. Despite the loss of Josh Allen, the offense should be far better. Honestly, it can’t be a whole lot worse.

If they’re really and truly the team that should be a factor in the Mountain West race, they need to show it by winning this with ease.

Can the Aggies go Bowling Again?

After years and years and years of awful football, the program finally got to give its fans a little bit of fun. With a high-powered offense, a thrilling defense that attacked as well as anyone in the country,  the team won. Last year gave fans their first bowl appearance – and win – since 1960.

The Aggies got booted out of the Sun Belt with a bang.

Before that, it was 14 years since NMSU came up with a winning season. It won’t be that long before the program goes bowling or has a winner again.

The Aggies will keep on winging it around this year. That is despite the loss of QB Tyler Rogers and star WR Jaleel Scott. Matt Romero will get the start for the Aggies. The new guys will have their moments, no doubt.

The rebuilding offensive front will have a nightmare of a time against what the Cowboys are going to bring up front. The Aggies were a turnover machine last year. Don't expect that to change tonight.

Defensive coordinator Frank Spaziani gets back a good group. They bring back nine starters. The pass rush should be great. The experience is there in the secondary as well. Overall, this has the potential to be the best defense yet in the Doug Martin era in Las Cruces.

Wyoming has A Chance to be Really Good

Eight starters are back from the nation’s top defense in takeaways. They are led by a terrific group of tacklers. It starts with hard-hitting safety Andrew Wingard. There are plenty of strong parts of the defensive puzzle. The secondary should be the shining star.

That’s a problem for an NMSU team that has to throw.

6-4 stud bombers Tyler Vander Waal and Nick Smith are each good enough to do far more than Allen could come up with last season. The O line is experienced enough to be better for a woeful running game. Just about everyone of note is back in the receiving corps.

Wyoming won’t be 125th in the nation in total offense again.

The defense that led the Mountain West in sacks and the nation in takeaways is beyond loaded with experience.

There’s NFL upside on the line with Carl Granderson at the end and with Youhanna Ghaifan at the other. There might not be a better safety in college football than Andrew Wingard. Add in the veteran linebacking corps, and it’s all there to be special again.

Wyoming will go bowling three years in a row for the first time in it's history. If the offense gets cracking, they can contend for a major bowl game.

Colorado State Hosts Hawaii to Open 2018 Season

Colorado State Rams Athletics

Colorado State and Hawaii Look for Big 2018 Seasons

Hughes Stadium has a Week 1 contest on tap for Saturday as the Hawaii Warriors and the Colorado State Rams play their season openers. The Mountain West Conference will be up for grabs this season. This game may tell a lot about the season.

Oddsmakers opened the Rams as -14-point favorites versus the Warriors, while the game's total opened at 55.5. Colorado State is now a 17-point favorite. The total is settled at 59.

CBS Sports Network has the coverage with kickoff set for 7:30 pm EST.

The Mountain West opener may come with big bowl ramifications for each team.

Hawaii has a 13-game season with winnable dates against Duquesne and Rice. They will likely be the underdog in at least nine games after this streak. They had an ugly 3-9 season the Rainbow Warriors need to start out with something positive tonight.

They need to be able to take down a winnable road game like this. They lost last year 52-21 to the Rams.

Colorado State was able to get off to a hot start in its Week 0 game last season. They beat up and blew out a awful Oregon State team. Little did anyone know what a big deal that would be for the Rams’ bowl hopes. but they only won six games on the year. They needed that win, and will need one tonight.

Colorado State Has to Go Without Head Coach

Colorado State is dealing with something scarier than Hawaii. Head coach Mike Bobo is hospitalized with numbness in his feet. He’s expected to be fine. In the meantime, the Ram coaching staff is trying to figure out its situation in case the head man can’t go.

It is going to be mixed early on for CSU. Star QB Nick Stevens is done. So are three all-conference linemen, and Dallas Cowboy WR Michael Gallup. Chip in leading rusher Dalyn Dawkins and you lose a lot. They were from the Mountain West’s best offense.

WR Preston Williams, Jr. is a Tennessee transfer. He was a superstar recruit and is getting a shot to show what he can do after being suspended. He’s got all the tools to be special player. The kid has 6-4, 210-pound frame and track star speed and athleticism. He tore it up this spring.

With the addition of grad transfer QB KJ Carta-Samuels, and a few interesting new parts starting to rise up, the O should be okay.

New defensive coordinator John Jancek has to figure out the defensive front. He’s got a terrific linebacking stable to work with. There’s  enough talent in the secondary for it not to not be a massive problem.

Safety Jordan Fogal returning is going to be a big help. Corner Anthony Hawkins should be a good one. He has to start producing and quickly.

Hawaii Has to Get Run and Shoot Going Early Tonight

Hawaii has to get the Run and Shoot going quickly. The Rainbow Warriors were trying to throw it last year. This time around they’re going back to the old days. They will attack with an offense that will spread everyone out.

Hawaii will look for the lanes in the running game, and take over games with the quick-hitting controlled passing attack.

The program that would throw the ball around the yard 600 times a season is going back to the past. They still kept winging it after June JOnes, but not in quite the same way.

Defense was always optional, and the running game was occasionally decent. Hawaii football turned into the fun late night snack everyone craved. Just when you thought you didn’t have enough fun, there for you in the wee hours of the morning were 512 passing yards coming your way.

Head coach Nick Rolovich is making the move to what Hawaii football is supposed to be about. The Fun and Gun. It’s not like the run-and-shoot offensive attack ever vanished. It morphed into more of an up-tempo, diverse style.

To work it relied as much on balance at times as it did the big passing game. But a 2,814-yard 2017 passing season with 19 touchdowns? That used to be a good quarter for Timmy Chang.

The pieces may not be in place yet to return to the fun days. One thing is for sure the offense should be more fun to watch this season.

The Phillies Arrieta to Take on the Blue Jays in Series Opener

Phillies Baseball

Phillies Look to Keep Pace with Braves in NL East

The Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies kick off interleague play this Friday. While the Phillies have struggled lately. They have gone 4-6 over their last 10 games. The team should be able to make some ground against the Jays.  They are 3 games behind the Braves in the NL East race.

TV: 7:07 p.m. ET, NBCS Philadelphia, Sportsnet (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Jake Arrieta (9-8, 3.25 ERA) vs. Blue Jays LH Ryan Borucki (2-3, 4.27)

Odds: Phillies are -128-moneyline favorites. The total is 9 Under -120.

The Phillies hope their strong interleague play this season carries over into the weekend. They've won 11 of 17 of contests. Philadelphia did drop two of three to Toronto at Citizens Bank Park in May.

Toronto Is Playing a Lot of Young Players Down the Stretch

Rumored to have been in on the Arrieta sweepstakes just eight months ago, the Toronto Blue Jays are now on a different path. They have entered full rebuild mode.

At 57-69, the Jays are making use of their flopped season. They are auditioning their prospects at the big-league level.  It has been a revolving door in Toronto lately. Ryan Borucki is one of those young ballplayers.

Borucki's last trip to the mound was a brief one. The 24-year-old rookie was blitzed for a career-worst six runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning. This was in Sunday's 10-2 loss at the New York Yankees.

Borucki allowed the first six batters he faced to reach base as the wheels came off in a hurry. He has yielded 14 runs on 19 hits and two homers in his last three starts. This was after keeping the ball in the park in each of his previous seven outings.

Curtis Granderson is 10-for-32 with three homers and 10 RBIs against Arrieta. He is 7-for-16 with three doubles and four runs scored in his last five contests.

Kendrys Morales belted his fifth homer in the last four games overall. He is 3-for-6 with two RBIs in his career versus Arrieta.

Phillies Counting on Arrieta Down the Stretch

By contrast, the former Cy Young Award winner and Ace of the Phillies’ staff, Jake Arrieta, is rounding into form. This is definitely when his team needs him the most.

Arrieta is poised to lead the Phillies to a postseason berth for the first time since 2011.

He has followed up a 4-0 mark over a seven-start stretch with back-to-back losses. He deserved a better fate in his last trip to the mound.

The 2015 NL Cy Young Award winner allowed just one run on four hits while striking out six. He also didn't walk a batter over six innings in a 3-1 setback to the New York Mets on Saturday.

Arrieta owns a 4-2 mark with a 4.85 ERA in eight career encounters versus the Blue Jays.

Cesar Hernandez has eight hits and six runs scored in his last seven games overall, although he went 1-for-12 in the previous series versus Toronto.

Free NFL Preseason Week 3 Pick- Detroit Lions at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Buccaneers and Lions Want to Exceed Expectations

The Detroit Lions and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the featured NFL game on CBS Friday Night. The week 3 preseason Game from Raymond James Stadium is set for 8 p.m.

BetAnySports has opened Tampa Bay as a two-point home favorite with the total set at 44.5 points. The line is not Tampa -2.5 and the total is down to 43.5.

Lions Look for More Production

The Lions will be looking for a bit more production on offense. They have scored a combined 27 points in their first two preseason games.

Following a 16-10 loss to Oakland in Week 1, where they were 3.5-point road underdogs, they were on the wrong end of Friday night’s 30-17 loss to the New York Giants. They were three-point favorites at home. The total went OVER BetAnySports’ 40.5-point line in that game.

Mathew Stafford sat out the preseason opener against the Raiders. The veteran quarterback was limited to two completions on five passing attempts in a short stint against New York. He should get a better opportunity to run the first-team offense this Friday night.

This will be seen as a final warm up for an opening day clash against the New York Jets on Monday, Sept. 10.

Detroit added veteran running back LeGarrette Blount as a free agent. He rushed for 32 yards on 11 carries in the lost to the Giants.

The Buccaneers Look for Great Improvement in 2018

Tampa Bay only won five straight-up games in the 2017 regular season. They are a perfect 2-0 both SU and against the spread this preseason.

The Buccaneers beat Miami 26-24 on the road in Week 1 as 2.5-point underdogs. Then last Saturday they had a 30-14 road win against Tennessee as three-point underdogs.

The total went OVER BetAnySports’ closing line in each contest. Tampa Bay posted a 1-3 (SU and ATS) record last preseason with the total staying UNDER in all four games.

Jameis Winston will be on the shelf for the Week 1 opener against the New Orleans Saints. He has a pending league suspension. Winston looked to be in mid-season form on Saturday night against the Titans. He completed 13-of-18 attempts for 226 yards and a pair of scoring strikes.

The big play had been lacking in Tampa Bay’s offense. Winston connected on a 54-yard pass play with his fastest target, DeSean Jackson. He had two catches for 73 yards.

Stafford and Winston have a chance to make this an interesting matchup through at least the first half of action this Friday night. In the end, I am betting on the Lions both SU and ATS as the better all-around team.
