Phillies Look to Keep Pace with Braves in NL East

The Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies kick off interleague play this Friday. While the Phillies have struggled lately. They have gone 4-6 over their last 10 games. The team should be able to make some ground against the Jays.  They are 3 games behind the Braves in the NL East race.

The Phillies hope their strong interleague play this season carries over into the weekend. They've won 11 of 17 of contests. Philadelphia did drop two of three to Toronto at Citizens Bank Park in May.

Toronto Is Playing a Lot of Young Players Down the Stretch

Rumored to have been in on the Arrieta sweepstakes just eight months ago, the Toronto Blue Jays are now on a different path. They have entered full rebuild mode.

At 57-69, the Jays are making use of their flopped season. They are auditioning their prospects at the big-league level.  It has been a revolving door in Toronto lately. Ryan Borucki is one of those young ballplayers.

Borucki's last trip to the mound was a brief one. The 24-year-old rookie was blitzed for a career-worst six runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning. This was in Sunday's 10-2 loss at the New York Yankees.

Borucki allowed the first six batters he faced to reach base as the wheels came off in a hurry. He has yielded 14 runs on 19 hits and two homers in his last three starts. This was after keeping the ball in the park in each of his previous seven outings.

Curtis Granderson is 10-for-32 with three homers and 10 RBIs against Arrieta. He is 7-for-16 with three doubles and four runs scored in his last five contests.

Kendrys Morales belted his fifth homer in the last four games overall. He is 3-for-6 with two RBIs in his career versus Arrieta.

Phillies Counting on Arrieta Down the Stretch

By contrast, the former Cy Young Award winner and Ace of the Phillies’ staff, Jake Arrieta, is rounding into form. This is definitely when his team needs him the most.

Arrieta is poised to lead the Phillies to a postseason berth for the first time since 2011.

He has followed up a 4-0 mark over a seven-start stretch with back-to-back losses. He deserved a better fate in his last trip to the mound.

The 2015 NL Cy Young Award winner allowed just one run on four hits while striking out six. He also didn't walk a batter over six innings in a 3-1 setback to the New York Mets on Saturday.

Arrieta owns a 4-2 mark with a 4.85 ERA in eight career encounters versus the Blue Jays.

Cesar Hernandez has eight hits and six runs scored in his last seven games overall, although he went 1-for-12 in the previous series versus Toronto.

Free NFL Preseason Week 3 Pick- Detroit Lions at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Buccaneers and Lions Want to Exceed Expectations

The Detroit Lions and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the featured NFL game on CBS Friday Night. The week 3 preseason Game from Raymond James Stadium is set for 8 p.m.

BetAnySports has opened Tampa Bay as a two-point home favorite with the total set at 44.5 points. The line is not Tampa -2.5 and the total is down to 43.5.

Lions Look for More Production

The Lions will be looking for a bit more production on offense. They have scored a combined 27 points in their first two preseason games.

Following a 16-10 loss to Oakland in Week 1, where they were 3.5-point road underdogs, they were on the wrong end of Friday night’s 30-17 loss to the New York Giants. They were three-point favorites at home. The total went OVER BetAnySports’ 40.5-point line in that game.

The Buccaneers Look for Great Improvement in 2018

Tampa Bay only won five straight-up games in the 2017 regular season. They are a perfect 2-0 both SU and against the spread this preseason.

The Buccaneers beat Miami 26-24 on the road in Week 1 as 2.5-point underdogs. Then last Saturday they had a 30-14 road win against Tennessee as three-point underdogs.

The total went OVER BetAnySports’ closing line in each contest. Tampa Bay posted a 1-3 (SU and ATS) record last preseason with the total staying UNDER in all four games.

Jameis Winston will be on the shelf for the Week 1 opener against the New Orleans Saints. He has a pending league suspension. Winston looked to be in mid-season form on Saturday night against the Titans. He completed 13-of-18 attempts for 226 yards and a pair of scoring strikes.

The big play had been lacking in Tampa Bay’s offense. Winston connected on a 54-yard pass play with his fastest target, DeSean Jackson. He had two catches for 73 yards.

Stafford and Winston have a chance to make this an interesting matchup through at least the first half of action this Friday night. In the end, I am betting on the Lions both SU and ATS as the better all-around team.

Braves Look to Sweep Pirates Wednesday

The Atlanta Braves and the Pittsburgh Pirates will wrap up their 3-game series on Wednesday night when they meet at PNC Park. The Braves have won the first two contests 1-0, and 6-1 last night.

Atlanta has rebounded from a four-game home sweep by Colorado. They have won the first two contests of a two-city, seven-game road trip. The Braves enter Wednesday winners of 16 of its past 24 games.

Pirates Just have ZERO Offense

Pittsburgh had allowed only one run in each of its previous five games. Thanks in part to outstanding work from its bullpen. That ended on Tuesday when Pirates relievers saw their stretch of 16 2/3 scoreless innings end with three runs off Michael Feliz in the seventh.

Left fielder Corey Dickerson is hitting .379 during his current seven-game hitting streak.

The Pirates have scored just 15 runs while losing seven of their past nine games.

Williams put together a solid first half of the season. He has been outstanding in five starts since the All-Star break. He has gone 3-2 with a 0.87 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP.

The 26-year-old is 1-2 so far in August despite giving up only three runs over 19 innings. He has allowed one run on four hits with four strikeouts across seven innings Friday in a 1-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

Williams has faced the Braves twice in his career (one start and one relief outing in 2017), surrendering three runs on seven hits in seven innings.

Francisco Cervelli finished 1-for-3 with a double Tuesday and is hitting .390 lifetime against the Braves.

Braves Get Output Up and Down the Lineup

First baseman Freddie Freeman leads the National League in hits with 155, and batting average at .321. The Braves continue to lead Philadelphia in the NL East.

There has been criticism levied at Dansby Swanson for his offensive struggles this season, and rightly so. The Braves shortstop is finding his rhythm at just the right time entering Wednesday's series finale at the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Swanson has stayed in the starting lineup thanks mostly to his defensive work. The youngster recorded the first multi-homer game of his career in Tuesday's 6-1 victory. He is hitting .360 with three homers and 10 RBIs during a seven-game hitting streak.

Julio Teheran finally has found consistency after alternating good starts and bad ones for most of the season. He has put together a four-game stretch in which he has posted a 3.42 ERA with only three homers allowed in 23 2/3 innings.

The 27-year-old is 1-0 in that stretch with three consecutive no-decisions. The latest was Thursday against Colorado when he gave up two runs with seven strikeouts in seven innings.

Teheran is 3-1 with a 2.67 ERA in nine career appearances (eight starts) against Pittsburgh.
