Zack Greinke (13-8, 2.93 ERA, 1.05 WHIP) allowed an unearned run on five hits. He had two walks with six strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings in a 5-2 win against the Mariners last Sunday.

Arizona ranks 3rd with a 3.52 ERA, 5th with a 1.21 WHIP and 3rd with 1194 strikeouts.

Their bullpen ranks 2nd with a 3.09 ERA. Paul Goldschmidt leads the Diamondbacks with 30 home runs, 76 RBI, a .395 OBP and 146 hits. David Peralta has 26 home runs, 74 RBI and a team-best .303 batting average.

MLB Trends:

The Arizona Diamondbacks are:

10-4 in their last 14 Friday games

18-8 in their last 26 during game 2 of a series

7-1 in Greinke's last eight road starts

7-1 in Greinke's last eight Friday starts

5-1 in Greinke's last six starts during game 2 of a series

7-2 in Greinke's last nine starts against National League West opponents

6-2 in Greinke's last eight starts against a team with a winning record

19-8 in Greinke's last 27 starts after allowing two runs or less in their previous game

9-4 in Greinke's last 13 starts

35-16 in Greinke's last 51 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance

4-1 in Greinke's last five starts against the Dodgers

9-4 in the last 13 meetings

The Los Angeles Dodgers are:

3-11 in their last 14 during game 2 of a series

0-4 in their last four home games against a team with a winning record

7-19 in Ryu's last 26 starts against a team with a winning record

2-7 in Ryu's last nine home starts against a team with a winning record

1-4 in Ryu's last five starts during game 2 of a series

0-5 in Ryu's last five Friday starts

The Diamondbacks opened the series with a close win. They should have the advantage with Zack Greinke on the mound.

Hyun-Jin Ryu has been excellent for the Dodgers. He's completed six innings or more in just four of his nine starts lately. This could put some added stress on a Los Angeles bullpen that has been inconsistent as of late. I like Arizona at plus money in this divisional showdown.

Stanford (13) Hosts San Diego State to open 2018

Stanford Cardinal Athletics

Stanford Looks to Rebound and Compete for Pac-12 Title

The fans at Stanford Stadium will see the San Diego State Aztecs and the Stanford Cardinal when they open their 2018 college football season. The Friday night tilt starts at 9 pm EST. Fox Sports 1 will have the telecast.

Oddsmakers opened the Cardinal as -14.5-point favorites versus the Aztecs, while the game's total opened at 53. Stanford is now 13.5-point favorites. The total has settled at 49.

Most fans expected Stanford running back Bryce Love to be in the NFL this week. Instead the scholar-athlete will be in the lineup Friday. Love returns for his senior season. He led all Power 5 running backs last year in yards rushing (2,118), yards per carry (8.1) and 100-yard games (12).

Stanford is Loaded for the 2018 Campaign

Stanford won the Pac-12 North for the fourth time in the past six seasons last year. They return 18 starters, including Love, the Heisman Trophy runner-up. Love finished with 19 touchdowns and had 13 rushes of at least 50 yards.

The loaded Cardinal offense also features their top four receivers from last year. Junior quarterback K.J. Costello, who took over as the starter midway through last season, is back as well.

Stanford is looking to avenge last year's 20-17 loss to San Diego State, which has relied on its stellar running game to go 32-9 over the past three seasons.

The Aztecs Look to Dominate on the Ground

The Aztecs have had back-to-back 2,000-yard rushers in D.J. Pumphrey and Rashaad Penny. They could extend the streak with Juwan Washington. He will receive a heavy workload after rushing for 759 yards seven touchdowns last season.

Senior quarterback Christian Chapman returns behind a strong offensive line for the Aztecs. They are picked to finish second in the West Division of the Mountain West.

San Diego State ranked 21st nationally in scoring defense last season. They return a strong secondary led by safety Tariq Thompson, who finished with five interceptions.

San Diego State has won three consecutive games against Pac-12 teams. They have beaten California (2016), winning at Arizona State (2017) and downing Stanford (2017).

Wisconsin (4) Opens 2018 Season Against Western Kentucky

Wisconsin Badgers Big Ten Athletics

Wisconsin Faces the Dangerous Hilltoppers

The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers and the Wisconsin Badgers will open their 2018 seasons on Friday night. Camp Randall Stadium will be the site of the action. ESPN will televise the game starting at 9 pm EST.

Oddsmakers opened the Badgers as -33-point favorites versus the Hilltoppers, while the game's total opened at 51. The line is now Wisconsin 37 and the total is at 51.5.

Fourth-ranked Wisconsin looks to live up to its lofty ranking on Friday. The Badgers went unbeaten in the regular season last year. That was en route to their third Big Ten West Division title in the last four years. They fell to Ohio State in the conference championship game.

The Badgers hope to build on their record-breaking 13-win season by earning a spot in the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history.

Wisconsin Returns Some Experience in Key Positions

Wisconsin returns several key players on offense. Including Heisman Trophy candidate Jonathan Taylor. He set an NCAA freshman rushing record with 1,977 yards. Quarterback Alex Hornibrook is back after throwing 25 touchdowns passes. The lefthander will be without two major weapons.

Taylor racked up ten 100-yard games to go along with 13 touchdowns in his record-breaking freshman campaign. He is poised for another big year with all five starters returning on the offensive line. They include All-Americans Beau Benzschawel, Michael Deiter and David Edwards.

Junior Quintez Cephus, who was the team's top returning receiver, was suspended indefinitely. He was charged with two counts of sexual assault. Danny Davis will sit out the first two games for his role in the alleged incidents.

Wisconsin has won 22 consecutive home openers. They can extend its non-conference winning streak at Camp Randall to 40 games with another victory.

Western Kentucky is Looking to Rebound

Western Kentucky is coming off its first losing season since 2010. They have hopes to earn the biggest win of Mike Sanford Jr.'s two-season tenure by knocking off a Big Ten opponent. It would be the first time in school history after losing its previous seven meetings.

Senior quarterback Drew Eckels will replace Mike White. White threw for 4,177 yards and 26 touchdowns last season. Eckels hopes to prove the critics wrong after the Hilltoppers were picked to finish fifth in Conference USA's East Division.

Senior D'Andre Ferby is the favorite to start at running back after rushing for a team-high 373 yards in 2017. There are four other players vying for playing time in a crowded backfield.

"I think that all five guys are going to play against Wisconsin," Sanford told reporters. "We've had opportunities in scrimmages to see who ran the best and that was going to decide the starter but all five of them have done really good things."

Michigan State (11) Opens Against Utah State

Michigan State Athletics

Michigan State Looks to Contend for Big 10 Title

The Utah State Aggies and the Michigan State Spartans will both be looking to go 1-0 to start the season. They meet at Spartan Stadium on Friday night to kick off the 2018 campaign. Big Ten Network has the kickoff at 7 pm EST.

Oddsmakers opened the Spartans as -27-point favorites versus the Aggies, while the game's total opened at 50.5. The line is now Michigan State -23.5 and the total is up to 52.

No. 11 Michigan State enters this season with hopes of contending for a Big Ten title. Maybe a national championship if things go their way. They have to prove it on the field and avoid a start like 2017.

Michigan State Returns A Lot of Starters

Coach Mark Dantonio returns 19 of 22 starters from last season's 10-3 campaign. That includes junior quarterback Brian Lewerke. He threw for 2,793 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2017.

The Spartans' offense features a number of big playmakers. They are led by senior running back LJ Scott who had 898 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground in 2017.  Senior receiver Felton Davis III had 55 catches, 776 yards and nine touchdowns last season.

The Spartans juggled three running backs in 2017. This season, Scott should get most of the carries. He is hoping to avoid the fumble troubles that plagued him as a junior.

Having a more experienced Lewerke under center will make defenses have to respect the Spartans' passing game more. Scott may be able to find more holes and finally get his first collegiate 1,000-yard rushing campaign.

Defensively, Michigan State may be even better. They allowed only 20 points per game in 2017 and returning nearly every starter.

Junior linebacker Joe Bachie is the leader for Dantonio's defense. He paced the Spartans in tackles with 100, forced fumbles with two, and earning team MVP honors.

Utah State is Loaded With Returning Players as Well

The Aggies return 18 starters and could provide some troubles if the Michigan State offense isn't sharp, having ranked tied for sixth in the nation in 2017 with 29 forced

The Aggies' quarterback duties are sophomore Jordan Love's this season. He displaced then-senior Kent Myers partway through the 2017 campaign. He finished with 1,631 yards and eight touchdowns through the air. Love has had an offseason to better learn coach Matt Wells' system.

He'll have plenty of experienced targets to look for in the passing game. The biggest question is how well the Aggies can protect Love. The team has struggled with over the past few years. Love is nimble on his feet and has shown the ability to pick up yards on the ground when he needs.

PREDICTION: Michigan State 42, Utah State 17
