Denver had a chance to go into Tuesday's battle tied with Golden State but watched its offense fall apart in the second half against the Wizards. They suffered a 95-90 home loss.

The Denver Nuggets are 51-25 on the season. They are averaging 94.6 points in its last five games. As a result, the team has scored 90 or fewer points in three of those contests. Every single one of them are losses. Point guard Jamal Murray was held to 12 points in 22 minutes on Sunday. He was hobbled with an ankle sprain and is questionable for Tuesday.

The Golden State Warriors are 52-24 on the season. Golden State did not have a starter log more than Draymond Green's 29 minutes on Sunday. That is a good thing with the battle with Denver in high gear and the playoffs approaching. Curry and Klay Thompson combined to go 11-of-17 from 3-point range in the shellacking. Guard Quinn Cook made the most of his extra minutes off the bench. He went 5-of-6 from beyond the arc en route to 21 points. Denver won the first meeting on Oct. 21, but Golden State took the last two by a total of 48 points.

Braves And Cubs Coming Off Bad Starts to Season

The Chicago Cubs won their season opener, and that is about all you can say. They then saw their pitching implode in back-to-back losses. The Cubbies head into Monday's contest against the Atlanta Braves in Atlanta. The Braves have their own issues with their bullpen. They got swept out of Philadelphia with an 0-3 record.

The Cubs are needing better work on the mound. The Cubs squandered leads of 4-0 and 8-5 in Sunday's 11-10 setback at Texas. The winning run scored on Pedro Strop's wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning. It capped a two-day stretch in which Chicago pitchers gave up 19 runs on 22 hits and 18 walks. Chicago pounded out 17 hits in Sunday's loss. Daniel Descalso finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and has recorded 28 runs and 39 hits through three games. The Cubs are in the midst of a season-opening nine-game road trip. They lead the National League, and rank second in the majors, in road victories since the start of the 2015 campaign with 183.

The Braves are the only team in baseball yet to get a win. Their pitching also struggled in its season-opening series with Philadelphia. They gave up 23 runs, 20 walks and eight homers. Freddie Freeman collected six hits in the opening set and owns a 1.492 OPS. Atlanta's offense generated just 11 runs. The Braves did not lose three in a row last season until games 31-33. That was a three-game sweep by San Francisco in early May.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH Kyle Hendricks (2018: 14-11, 3.44 ERA) vs. Braves LH Sean Newcomb (2018: 12-9, 3.90).

The Cubs rewarded Hendricks with a four-year contract extension after a stellar 2018 season. He led the team with career highs of 33 starts and 199 innings pitched last season. Hendricks struggled some in spring training. He gave up 22 hits over 16 1/3 innings, over five starts. Hendricks is 1-0 with a 2.33 ERA in four career appearances (three starts) against the Braves. He did not face them last year.

Newcomb's first full major-league season showed plenty of promise for the young Atlanta Brave. He also continued to struggle with his control as he went 8-5 with a 3.51 ERA in the first half of the season. On the ass-end, he was 4-4 with a 4.58 mark. He posted a 5.14 ERA across six spring-training outings. Newcomb also walked more hitters, with 15, than he struck out, 14. Newcomb is 0-2 with a 5.17 ERA in three career games against the Cubs. CF Ender Inciarte and 3B Josh Donaldson, the top two hitters in the lineup, have gone a combined 2-for-22 to start the season.

Backup guard Malik Beasley scored a career-best 35 points and star center Nikola Jokic added 31 as the Nuggets posted a 136-122 home win over the Rockets on Feb. 1.

Denver is a hot squad with seven victories in its last eight games. They are waging a battle with the Golden State Warriors for the top seed in the Western Conference. Tuesday's 95-92 home win over the Detroit Pistons gave the Nuggets their first 50-win season since going 57-25 in 2012-13. Houston suffered a 108-94 road loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday. They are battling the Portland Trail Blazers for the third seed in the West. James Harden scored just 23 points on 9-of-26 shooting and is averaging 25.5 points over the past two games. He averaged 59 over the previous two contests.

Goaltender Carey Price has been the difference maker for them over that run. He’s registered a shutout and allowed just eight goals over those five games.

Columbus is feeling the pressure of the playoff push. They have responded by shutting out their opponents in each of the last two games. The Blue Jackets are 42-30-4 on the season. Matt Duchene recorded his 20th multi-point performance of the season and second with Columbus. He was instrumental in setting up a pair of goals against the Islanders. He collected a goal and two assists against Montreal while playing for Ottawa. Fellow former Senator Ryan Dzingel has found his stride by scoring a goal in his second consecutive contest. He was able to extend his point streak to three games. Artemi Panarin, who tallied for the first time in March on Tuesday, also has set up four goals in his last seven contests. That boosted his team-leading totals in assists (52) and points (78). D Seth Jones has scored one goal and set up four others during his five-game point streak at home.

Coach Tad Boyle's Buffs are seeking the program's fifth berth to the Big Apple semifinals. It would be their first since 2011. Their one and only championship was won way back in the NIT's third season in 1940. Texas is 14-6 at home this season while Colorado is 5-8 in true road contests.

Colorado is 23-12 on the season and feel they should have made the NCAA Tournament. A Win tonight over a good Texas team may prove that. The Buffs took a 43-23 lead into the half against Norfolk State Monday. They cruised to the win on the strength of 50% shooting. They also took advantage of dominating at the free-throw line (16-10) and on the glass (42-37). Emerging forward Evan Battey notched his first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Tyler Bey just missed his eighth in double in his last 10 games with a game-high 17 points and nine boards. The 6-7 Bey is averaging a team-best 13.4 points and 9.8 boards. He is a key reason why Colorado ranks in the nation's top 20 in rebound margin at plus-6.5.

Texas is 18-16 on the season and showing it's strength of schedule prepared them or postseason battle.
