European football is widely believed to be the very best on the planet, with the world’s greatest players having to try their luck on these shores.
Neymar, Lionel Messi, Ronaldo, Diego Maradona; the finest footballers to come out of South America find their way to Europe to play club football. The Champions League is considered the pinnacle of club football, the hardest competition to win outside of the international game.
Oddly, international football has a tournament that showcases the very best young players, merges them with a handful of big-name stars and yet isn’t recognised as a huge honour in the same way as other tournaments.
Indeed, the Nations League, recently surrendered so meekly by England, is held in higher esteem in the UK than the Olympics. Debates rage on as to whether Great Britain should put a team into the Olympic games, with some of the home countries fearing a loss of identity if they agree. That means when the best young players in the world take to the stage next summer in Japan, the UK will barely be watching.
It was August of that year when a Spain side overcame Poland 3-2 in the final to take home the gold medal. Current Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was part of the side that saw off the brave fight of the Poles, with Kiko bagging twice in a thrilling final. He played 225 times for Atletico Madrid, but won just 26 caps following his gold medal.
Eight years later in Sydney, Spain were back in the final, this time against Cameroon. An African side might not yet have lifted a World Cup, but they secured gold after a penalty shoot out. Carlos Puyol was on the losing Spain side, whilst Geremi and Samuel Eto’o were amongst those taking medals back to Africa.
South America have dominated the medals since, Brazil taking gold in 2016, Argentina securing it in both 2004 and 2008 with the help of Lionel Messi and Mexico taking the prize at London 2012.
Perhaps with the European Championships taking place at the same time, the international focus is shifted from the Olympics. Perhaps, with the tournament often finishing days before domestic seasons start, the federations of Europe are happier to field weaker sides and let the gold be taken by countries who see football as an area they can succeed in during the summer games.
However, with crowds 0f 95,000 and 105,000 watching those two Spanish finals, those gold medal matches could be the biggest games those players ever take part in. As the sides have to be made up of at least eight under 23 players as well, it seems the European countries are missing a key development opportunity for their young players.
Could 2020 be the first Olympic tournament in almost three decades where a European side takes home a gold medal?
Monday’s MLB betting action comes to a close with a NL West tilt between the San Francisco Giants and the San Diego Padres. BetAnySports has opened the Padres at -164 home favorites for the 10:10 p.m. start at PETCO Park and the total line as been set at eight runs.
The Giants wrapped up an extended four-game weekend series at home against Arizona with a 10-4 victory on Sunday as slight +104 underdogs with BetAnySports to earn a 2-2 split. The total easily went OVER the seven-run line and it has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in four of their last five games. San Francisco is an even 5-5 over its last 10 games as part of an overall record of 36-47. It is 18-22 on the road this year.
While the 10 runs scored on Sunday was encouraging, the Giants are still ranked 14th in the NL with an average of just 3.9 runs a game. They do move up to 10th on the list in pitching with a 4.57 staff ERA. Look for Jeff Samardzija to get the start for San Francisco on Monday night. The right hander has lost three of his last four starts after allowing a combined 17 earned runs in those four games. His ERA now stands at 4.52 with a 1.29 WHIP.
Padres Look to go Into Break On a Roll
The Padres lost Game 3 of their weekend series at home against St. Louis 5-3 as -130 favorites. This snapped a brief four-game winning streak as part of an 8-4 record over their last 12 contests. San Diego is 42-41 overall with a 23-21 record at home. It has won five of its last six games played at PETCO Park. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in four of those six contests.
San Diego ranks 10th in the NL in scoring with an average of 4.6 runs a game. Its pitching staff inches its way up to eighth on the list with a team ERA of 4.45. Look for Logan Allen to get the start on Monday night. Through two previous trips to the mound as the team’s starter, the left hander has allowed just two earned runs on 11 hits through 13 innings pitched. He got the win in each of those efforts.
I am going to ride the hot arm in this one with San Diego getting another win at home behind Allen on the mound.
For most of the 2010s, the New York Yankees have played second fiddle to the Boston Red Sox in the American League East, that is until now. The 53-28 Yankees are nine games ahead of the third-place Red Sox at 44-39. They are heading into the 2nd game of this weekend’s two-game series across the pond at London Stadium.
TV: 10:10 a.m. ET, ESPN; LINE:Yankees -120; O/U: 16 Over -115.
PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees LH Stephen Tarpley (0-0, 6.48 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Eduardo Rodriguez (8-4, 4.87)
The first Major League Baseball game played in Europe provided a glimpse into the wacky and crazy things that happen between these two teams. The least of them is drawn-out affairs that seem to take forever to play. The Yankees survived the nearly five-hour marathon and hope to leave London with a two-game sweep Sunday morning.
The pitchers for both teams were like human gas-cans. Each team scored six times in the first inning. To top it off both teams used eight pitchers overall in New York's 17-13 ass-kicking Saturday night (afternoon in the States) in a game that lasted four hours, 42 minutes. It was three minutes shy of the longest nine-inning contest in MLB history. You would know the record was set in 2006 by these two teams.
Newly minted All-Star, DJ LeMahieu had four of the Yankees' 19 hits and drove in five runs. Rookie Michael Chavis provided a good portion of the offense for Boston with a pair of three-run homers. The teams hope for some innings out of their starters in Sunday's edition. New York will be forced to go with Stephen Tarpley. The Red Sox fell 10 games behind the first-place Yankees on Saturday. They will counter with fellow left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez.
This, That, and a London Dart Throw
Chad Green was expected to be the starter for this one but he was forced to toss two innings of relief after Masahiro Tanaka was chased in the first inning. It prompted the shift to Tarpley. He has made 10 relief appearances for the Yankees. The team optioned lefty Nestor Cortes Jr. following the game after he threw three innings. They will add Chance Adams to the roster Sunday to eat up some innings in relief. Adams is 1-0 with a 3.97 ERA in three games with New York this season. He made his only career start in the majors last year against the Red Sox. He allowed three runs in five innings of a loss at Fenway Park. 1B Luke Voit left Saturday's game with an abdominal issue and is not expected to be in the lineup Sunday.
Rodriguez gave up five runs in 6 1/3 innings against the Chicago White Sox on Monday. He struck out four hitters, which was his second-lowest total of the season. He has allowed eight home runs in five June starts. His rough time was after serving up just three over his previous seven starts. He has yet to face the Yankees this year but owns a 3.89 ERA in 14 career appearances against "The Evil Empire". Twelve of his appearances have been starts. SS Xander Bogaerts departed the 17-13 loss with a left calf strain. CF Jackie Bradley Jr. had four hits Saturday and is batting .306 in June after hitting .247 in May and .127 in April.

Horse racing is an unpredictable sport which makes it difficult sometimes to know how to back the right horse, regardless of what the bookies have said. But the excitement and spontaneity of this sport is what makes betting on it so fun. If you’re a beginner to the world of horse racing, then you may be confused by the terminology of betting and unsure how to get started. Here are some tips on starting with your first bet.
Basic Betting Tips
Whether you’re a novice or an expert, it always helps to check free betting offers at the Winners Enclosure. Furthermore there are always two important factors to consider before placing a bet on a horse. Firstly, you don’t have to bet on every single race, as tempting as it might be. A much better strategy is to check the odds across a race day and focus your bets. Secondly, be sure to set a budget and stick to it. Many bettors find that they spread their bankroll too thin and then start dipping into their personal money when the bets don’t play out. But this can quickly spiral out of control and you end up spending far more than you planned, so always stay within the confines of your budget.
How to Bet as a Beginner
Betting can be daunting but once you get the hang of the terms and tricks, it’s much easier than it first appears. The most common increment when betting on horses is £2. This ensures that you keep your bankroll in check and work your way up slowly. You also might think that betting on the favourite isn’t worth it, particularly if you’re a risk-taker and the odds are low, but statistics show that betting this way results in a win 33% of the time. Basing your bets on this strategy could result in a quick profit.
Jockeys who are in the top 10 world rankings are likely to win around 90% of any given race, so if you can find a race with a highly-ranked jockey in it, this is usually a safer bet, but betting against that jockey could also work out in a bigger pay-out if you’re lucky. One of the best betting tips to remember is that bets are subject to change over the course of a race day, because horses can drop out or win and lose, which can change the prospective odds that are listed by the bookies.
The basic type of bets are Win, Place and Show. Win bets are where you bet on a horse to finish in first place; Place bets are for first or second; and a Show bet is for first, second or third. Betting on horses focuses on the odds, which is important to understand so that you can calculate how much you will win or lose in different circumstances. There’s also an order to horse bets – it’s the custom to say the track, race number, bet amount, bet type and then the horse number when you say your bet out loud.
The Atlanta Braves and the Chicago Cubs meet in the 3rd game of their four-game series tonight in Chicago. They have split the first two games of the series. Tonight promises to be a good matchup with these two teams that look like they are headed to the MLB playoffs again.
TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS Southeast (Atlanta), WGN (Chicago); LINE:Cubs -122; O/U: 9.5 Under -118.
Yu Darvish attempts to halt his struggles tonight against the visiting Atlanta Braves. Darvish has gone 0-2 with a 5.91 ERA in eight home starts this season. He fell to 0-5 with a 5.66 ERA in 12 career outings at the historic ballpark.
Darvish will oppose Dallas Keuchel . He recently signed a one-year, $13 million deal with the Braves after teams were unwilling to meet his free-agent demands in the offseason. Atlanta posted a 3-2 win on Tuesday behind a first-inning homer by Ronald Acuna Jr.. The home run went as high as it did far, as it was a towering creature that barely missed the new scoreboard and landed just out of the stadium. The Braves then got a two-run blast in the seventh by Ozzie Albies. The streaking Braves have won 14 of their last 18 games. They are 3-2 midway through their 10-game road trip. Chicago's Willson Contreras drove in both runs on Tuesday with a two-run double. He is 3-for-7 with a homer and five RBI's in the series.
This, That, and a Dart Throw
Keuchel lost his club debut as he gave up four runs, three earned, and eight hits over five innings against Washington. Atlanta catcher Brian McCann told reporters, referencing Keuchel's first outing. "I thought he threw the ball really well." Keuchel is 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA in two career starts against the Cubs and has served up a homer to Anthony Rizzo, who is 2-for-5 in his career against the lefty. Acuna is batting .320 with eight home runs and 20 RBI's this month.
The Cubs' Darvish matched the major-league record of 10 straight no-decisions in his last outing. He gave up four runs and four hits, two of them homers, over six innings against the New York Mets. Darvish was last involved in a decision on April 27. He gave up one run and two hits over six innings while defeating Arizona. Darvish lost to the Braves on April 4th. He gave up three runs and five hits over four innings. He is 0-2 with a 5.68 ERA in three career outings versus the Braves. Rizzo has gone just 4-for-24 over his last eight games.
Now you can dance your way to a breakdancing Olympic sports gold medal. The International Olympic Committee added breakdancing, skateboarding, surfing, and climbing as provisional sports for the 2024 Summer Games.
2024 Summer Olympics will take place in Paris. Organizers proposed the inclusion of the four sports last March. The IOC decided to include the four sports via a unanimous vote Tuesday in Switzerland. However, the executive board will make the final decision in December 2020.
Surfing, sport climbing, and skateboarding are already part of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Break dancing will make its Olympic debut in 2024. However, it is not the first time the IOC treated breaking as a sport. It was part of the 2018 Summer Youth Games in Buenos Aires.
Breakdancing Olympic Sport
Breakdancing Olympic sport is part of the IOC’s initiative to reach out to a more diverse and younger market. In addition, the IOC noted that breaking, sport climbing, skateboarding, and surfing will provide greater sustainability and gender balance in the Olympic games.
According to pay per head reports, the four sports will add 248 athletes with an equal number of men and women. Also, the total number of participants in the 2024 Paris Olympics will still be within the maximum allowed athletes of 10,500. In addition, the IOC said 95 percent of the venues are existing or temporary.
Local organizers and IOC representatives will observe skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing during the 2020 Games. Their final decision will depend on how the three sports perform during the Tokyo Olympics.
Climbing will have two events each for both men and women in the 2024 Games. These are speed and combined bouldering and lead. In addition, there will be 36 men and 36 women competing in the Olympics.
Skateboarding will have men’s and women’s street and park events. However, surfing will only have shortboard for both men and women. Read sportsbook pay per head reviews to find out what online bookies accept wagers for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
The Colorado Rockies and the San Francisco Giants clash in a three-game set this week with Game 1 from San Francisco on Monday night slated for a 10 p.m. start on ESPN. BetAnySports opened the Rockies as -132 road favorites with the total set at eight. The line is now Rockies -114 and the total is down to 7.5.
Colorado got doubled up on Sunday in a 6-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers as a heavy +225 road underdog. This followed losses in the first two games as part of a 5-5 record in their last 10 games. The Rockies are 40-37 overall and 13 games in back of Los Angeles in the NL West standings. They have gone 18-22 on the road this season and they are 3-3 in the first six games of this current nine-game road trip.
The Rockies remain at the top of the list in the NL when it comes to scoring runs. Through their first 77 games, this lineup has been able to belt out an average of 5.6 runs. Pitching has been a whole other story with a 5.15 staff ERA that is ranked last in the league. Jon Gray will be on the mound for Colorado on Monday night. The right hander has a 4.18 ERA with a 1.37 WHIP through 15 previous starts.
Giants are Playing Better Baseball
San Francisco is bringing up the rear in the NL West at 33-43, but it is an even 5-5 over its last 10 games. The Giants took two of three games from Arizona over the weekend to wrap up a seven-game road trip. They open this seven-game homestand at 15-21 in 36 previous home games this year. The total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in eight of their last 10 games on BetAnySports’ closing line.
With an average of 3.9 runs per game, San Francisco is ranked second-to-last in the NL in scoring. The Giants improve to 12th on the list in pitching with a staff ERA of 4.68. Drew Pomeranz will get the start in this series opener. The left hander has a 7.09 ERA and a 1.78 WHIP after allowing seven earned runs in 4 1/3 innings against the Dodgers his last time out.
I am going with the Rockies as road favorites on Monday night in a game that should also go OVER BetAnySports’ eight-run total line.
Argos and Tiger-Cats are One of CFL's Most Storied Rivalries
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the Toronto Argonauts will meet on Saturday when at BMO Field. This is one of the CFL's most storied rivalries and today should be a good matchup. The Ti-Cats are looking to stay unbeaten and the Argos are playing their season opener.
Kickoff is at 4:00 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN, RDS and ESPN+. Oddsmakers have Hamilton listed as 4.5 point favorites. The total is sitting at 52.5.
Two new head coaches square off today as well. Orlando Steinauer won his CFL head coaching debut in Week 1. Corey Chamblin is at the helm of a CFL franchise for the first time since 2015. There are a lot of similarities between Steinauer and Chamblin. Both head coaches are regarded as defensive gurus, and that is rare in the CFL. Both had stints as the Argos defensive coordinator, and both helped Toronto to Grey Cup victories while in that position.
Masoli is the Cog for the Tiger-Cats
Tiger-Cats quarterback Jeremiah Masoli has had success in the past against the Argos. He is fresh off being named his team’s nominee for Most Outstanding Player. He also cemented himself as a dependable option under center. Masoli has a 5-1 career record against Toronto.
The offense was largely limited by a stingy Saskatchewan Roughrider defense last week. Hamilton was only able to manage 232 yards of total offense in Week 1. Masoli passed for 169 of them. That was his lowest total in a single game since he became the Hamilton starter midway through 2017.
The Tiger-Cats were able to pull out the victory against the Riders, 23-17. They were aided by Saskatchewan starter Zach Collaros being knocked out of the game after the first play. Linebacker Simoni Lawrence was the one who delivered the knock-out blow to Collaros. He is in the lineup against Toronto. The eight-year veteran was handed a two-game suspension for his hit, but has appealed the suspension and will suit up for Week 2.
Argonauts are Ready to Get Going
This afternoon will be the first opportunity for Argos fans to get a look at off-season acquisition Derel Walker. The lofty receiver arrives in Toronto after spending four years with the Edmonton Eskimos. Walker struggled with injuries last season, but the Argonauts are hoping to see him return to form this season. That form saw him earn back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2015 and 2016. That would be a nice addition to the offense.
Walker’s day won’t be an easy one. He is expected to be matched up with Delvin Breaux, who is widely regarded as one of the best shutdown corners in the CFL. The Argos have a number of weapons at wide-out to hopefully alleviate that problem. Walker joins a receiving core that already includes S.J. Green and Armanti Edwards.
Argo QB James Franklin is looking for a statement season in 2019. Franklin was named the starter after Ricky Ray went down for the season in Week 2 last year. He failed to hang on to the job and that led to McLeod Bethel-Thompson taking over. Franklin did regain the starting role in the second-half of 2018, but Bethel-Thompson is still lurking if his play falters.
This, That, and a Dart Throw
Both teams having well-established aerial attacks on paper, but the game may well be decided on the ground. James Wilder Jr. of Toronto will match up with Canadian Sean Thomas Erlington of the Tiger-Cats. Erlington was limited to 68 yards rushing in Week 1. The entire Ticats offense was quiet as well and picked up the slack. This is his first year as a starter, and he’ll be looking to prove he belongs among the league’s best rushers. Wilder Jr. is coming off a disappointing 2018 by his lofty standards. He rushed for over 100 yards only once. That was in Week 4 against Edmonton. That was also the only game in which he was handed the ball more than 20 times. With Chamblin at the helm, Wilder Jr.’s workload could increase.
Hamilton will face the Argos on Saturday without go to receiver Luke Tasker. He is on the one-game injured list. Canadian offensive lineman Mike Filer will get the start at center for Hamilton. Last week’s starter Demetrius Rhaney missed a week of practice for personal business.
This afternoon will be the CFL debut of Argos lineman Shane Richards. He was the first-overall pick in the 2019 CFL Draft. He is slated to start at right guard for the Boatmen. He is one of two 2019 draft picks making their debut today. The other is Hamilton full-back Nikola Kalinic.
The Argos will honor CFL legend Ricky Ray prior to kickoff. Ray announced his retirement this off-season and remains the CFL’s fourth all-time leading passer.

The African continent is facing a soccer crisis that FIFA had to step in and take control. In fact, it assigned its secretary general to run the organization. As a result, Fatma Samoura will be the FIFA High Commissioner for Africa.
The Confederation of African Football suffered from one disaster to another in recent months. As a result, the organization is on the verge of collapse, according to sports news headlines. It came just in time for the preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations.
On the day before the tournament, senior officials held an emergency meeting. They agreed with FIFA’s decision to have Samoura run the show.
Although FIFA’s rules allow the organization to take control of any member association that’s in trouble, it is not allowed to run regional bodies. That’s why it needed CAF’s board to agree with Samoura’s appointment.
Soccer Crisis in Africa
The Confederation of African Football faced several issues. One of them is the investigation into its president Ahmad Ahmad for allegations of several wrongdoings. These include sexual harassment and financial mismanagement.
Ahmad denies all accusations against him. In fact, he told bookie pay per head sites that it was just a smear campaign. However, he was briefly arrested in Paris earlier in June after the reelection of Gianni Infantino as FIFA president.
Infantino was mad after Ahmad’s arrest. It came after Infantino claimed FIFA has changed for the better after the 2015 indictment against several high-ranking officials.
Samoura’s position is only a temporary one. Her role is to review how CAF is running the football program on the continent. In addition, she will supervise the administration of the organization. Also, she will recommend reforms to avoid problems in the future.
Samoura’s responsibilities include improving CAF’s reputation and make sure it can handle disasters better. At present, FIFA is still setting up the arrangement in time for summer. The best bookie pay per head hopes that she can help CAF out of its slump.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Ottawa REDBLACKS will both be battle on Thursday night at TD Place Stadium. The Roughriders are coming off a loss to Hamilton and the REDBLACKS are looking for win number two after beating Calgary.
Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN and ESPN+; LINE:REDBLACKS -4.5; O/U: 44.5.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders look to win their first game of the season. The Riders are coming off a 23-17 loss to the Tiger-Cats in Hamilton in Week 1. The REDBLACKS came back from 15 points down to defeat the Calgary Stampeders 32-28. The REDBLACKS are hosting their first home game of the new season. Six of Ottawa’s 11 victories in 2018 came at home. Ottawa won both meetings against Saskatchewan last season. They haven't lost against the Riders since the 2017 Eastern Semi-Final.
Roughriders Have Issues at QB
Current Roughriders, and ex-REDBLACKS running back, William Powell will play against his former teammates for the first time. The Texas native spent four seasons with the REDBLACKS. He won a Grey Cup in 2016 despite missing the season due to injury. Powell rushed for 104 yards last week against Hamilton and also found the end zone.
Quarterback Cody Fajardo will be making his first start for the Riders tonight. He is stepping in for starter Zach Collaros. He had to leave the opener after being injured on a hit from Tiger-Cats linebacker Simoni Lawrence. Fajardo had nine completions for 66 yards and had seven carries for 34 rushing yards and a touchdown in the loss to the Ticats. Isaac Harker, a 23-year-old rookie, played the majority of the second half. He averaged an impressive 9.1 yards per attempt. He also threw two interceptions, including a game-ending Hail Mary on the final play.
REDBLACKS Look to Keep Building
The Ottawa REDBLACKS know who will start at quarterback. It is 29-year old Dominique Davis. The Florida native threw four interceptions last week against Calgary. All was not last as he also threw for 276 yards while scoring three rushing touchdowns. That includes the go-ahead score with 1:22 to play in the fourth quarter. Davis will have to be better tonight.
Powell’s replacement is doing just fine in Ottawa. Mossis Madu Jr. had 112 yards on 24 carries during last week’s win over Calgary. He also added six catches for 28 yards.
With five Canadian starters up front, the REDBLACKS’ all-national O-line got off to a good start. Their work allowed Madu to break the century mark, but most importantly the team didn’t allow a single sack. Ottawa will field a similar lineup to last week, with a couple of exceptions. Defensive end JR Tavai and Canadian receiver Nate Behar are both out of the lineup after being placed on the 1-game injured list.
This, That, and a Dart Throw
REDBLACKS quarterback Dominique Davis will make his fourth career Canadian Football League start Thursday. Davis made two starts as a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The number of new head coaches in the CFL this season is four. That includes Riders’ head coach Craig Dickenson. The league saw four new head coaches during the 2012, 2008, and 1970 CFL season.
Ottawa scored in 70 points combined in both matchups against Saskatchewan last season. The REDBLACKS only allowed 42 from the Roughriders from both contests.
The Roughriders-REDBLACKS matchup has been decided within the final three minutes of a game SEVEN times since 2014.
