NFL News: Ravens’ Dobbins Out For Season With Knee Injury - September 2, 2021

There is a lot going on on the NFL front this week as teams cut down their rosters and player injuries are adding up. Let us not waste any more time and get to the NFL News.

The Baltimore Ravens suffered a big loss in the final preseason game as running back J.K. Dobbins suffered a season-ending knee injury. Dobbins suffered the injury on the opening drive of the Ravens’ 37-3 rout of the Washington Football Team on Saturday.

Dobbins tore the ACL in his left knee on the ninth play of the game, though some are wondering why coach John Harbaugh was even playing Dobbins and other starters in the game. Harbaugh pointed out that Dobbins had only played 23 plays in the preseason and that the Ravens don’t play their starters as much as some other teams.

“But there are other teams that don’t play their guys at all,” Harbaugh said. “They don’t play their starters for one snap. We are probably as close to that as we’ve … I know we’re farther down that road than we’ve ever been. We played our guys so little this offseason. It’s just been how we’ve done it. But any time a guy gets hurt, you ask yourself those questions.”

Dobbins was entering his first season as the feature back for the Ravens after rushing for 805 yards and nine touchdowns in 2020 as a rookie. He averaged 6.0 yards per carry, the second-highest average by a rookie running back over the last 20 seasons.

Baltimore will now turn to Gus Edwards and Ty’Son Williams to handle the ball-carrying duties at the running back position. Edwards has averaged 5.2 yards per carry over the last three seasons, while Williams was an undrafted back out of BYU that rushed for 131 yards this preseason (5.5 yards per carry).

The Ravens are among the top contenders for the AFC title this season, according to the BetUS Sportsbook’s AFC Championship odds. Baltimore has +850 odds to win the AFC championship, trailing the Kansas City Chiefs (+225), Buffalo Bills (+600) and Cleveland Browns (+750).

Twins Host The Cardinals Tuesday Night - July 28, 2020

Twins Major League Baseball

Twins Offense is Off the Hot Start

The Minnesota Twins put up 27 runs in taking two of their first three
games this season. The players look to bash their way to another win
when they host the St. Louis Cardinals in the teams home opener on
Tuesday. The Twins set a major league record with 307 home runs last
season. What is scary is the offense might be even better in 2020.

TIME: 8:10 p.m. ET. TV: FS Midwest, FS North; LINE: Twins -148; TOTAL: 10.5 Under -115

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Carlos Martinez (2019: 4-2, 3.17 ERA) vs. Twins RH Homer Bailey (2019: 13-9, 4.57)

Minnesota put up double-digit runs in each of its two victories
during the opening weekend. The weekend was capped by a 14-2 drubbing of
the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. The game included a first-inning grand
slam from Jake Cave and a pair of homers from 40-year-old designated
hitter Nelson Cruz.

Cruz finished 4-for-5 with four runs scored, seven RBIs and a pair of
doubles. He became the second-oldest player in American League history,
behind Rickey Henderson, to rack up four extra-base hits in a game.

Bailey Looks to Build on Positive 2019

Bailey made 31 starts while splitting the season between Kansas City
and Oakland last season. It was his most starts in a season since making
32 for the Cincinnati Reds in 2013. He signed a one-year, $7 million
deal with Minnesota in the offseason.

Bailey bounced back after going 1-14 with a 6.09 ERA in 2018 with Cincinnati. His struggles continued against National League
opponents. He posted a 5.55 ERA in five starts against NL opponents
last year. He was ripped for five runs at St. Louis on May 22nd. The
damage was inflicted on four hits, two homers, and two walks in 1-2/3
innings

Twins Host the Cardinals Tuesday Night 1

Cardinals to Depend on Pitching More

The Cardinals are coming off a series win as well. They missed out on
a chance to sweep the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 5-1 loss on Sunday. “We
want to obviously win every single game, but at the end of the day, a
series win is what we’re trying to do,” St. Louis second baseman Kolten
Wong told reporters. “As many series as we can win, it’s going to keep
us in the positives and pushing toward that goal of getting us to the
playoffs and World Series.”

Martinez is returning to the rotation after serving as the team’s
closer last season. He is hoping to rediscover the form that made him an
All-Star his last season as a full-time starter in 2017.

The 28-year-old posted a 42-27 record with a 3.24 ERA in 94 games
from 2015 to 2017. Ninety-two of those games were starts. He dealt with
shoulder discomfort in 2018 before moving to the bullpen. Martinez made
the rotation with a strong showing in summer camp. He built up to four
innings during an exhibition game last week.

This, That, and a Dart Throw

1. Twins CF Byron Buxton could make his season debut on Tuesday. He has been sidelines with foot issues.

2. Cardinals DH Matt Carpenter is off to a slow start at 1-for-10 with four strikeouts.

3. Minnesota 3B Josh Donaldson is 1-for-10 but scored his first two runs of the season after drawing two walks on Sunday.

4. St. Louis’s relievers have pitched 9.2 innings in the last 3 games.

5. Minnesota’s relievers have pitched 13 innings in the last 3 games

The Dart Throw: Twins 6, Cardinals 4.

MLB Monday: Padres Host the Rays

San Diego Padres Baseball

Rays are Red Hot Heading Into Face Padres

The San Diego Padres and the Tampa Bay Rays will square off on Monday Night in San Diego. The Rays are in the throes of another pennant race. The road has been kind to them and that is a good thing. The Padres look to throw a monkey wrench into the Rays plans starting tonight.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FS Sun (Tampa Bay), FS San Diego; LINE: Padres -121; O/U: 8 Under -115.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Diego Castillo (2-6, 3.50 ERA) vs. Padres LH Joey Lucchesi (7-6, 4.19)

The road continues to be kind to the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays have won seven straight away games. That is one shy of the team record set in July of 2014. They hold a 1-1/2-game lead over Oakland for the second American League wild-card spot. Tampa Bay is 12-6 against San Diego and have won the last seven meetings.

Ryan Yarbrough pitched into the ninth inning and Eric Sogard homered in Tampa Bay's 1-0 victory over Seattle on Sunday. The Rays' won for the 10th time their last 12 games. The Rays own the majors best road record at 38-22. Sogard continues to impress the team. He was acquired from Toronto last month and has reached base in a career-high 23 straight games. Sogard is ripping at a .341 clip over that stretch.

San Diego took three of four from Colorado over the weekend. They still remain 6-1/2 games back in the second National League wild card race. Francisco Mejia and Josh Naylor homered in Sunday's 8-3 loss. Rookie star Fernando Tatis Jr. went 0-for-4 and saw his career-high 14-game hitting streak come to an end.

This, That, and a MLB Dart Throw

The Rays' Castillo is expected to serve as the team's opener Monday. It will be his first appearance since last Tuesday. He pitched a scoreless 10th inning against Toronto. He has posted a 6.05 ERA over his last 21 appearances. The kids 10 walks has a lot to do with that number. He does have 16 strikeouts over that stretch. Castillo made a strong impression early in the season with a 1.37 ERA in his first 24 appearances.

The Padres' Lucchesi received a no-decision on Wednesday. He allowed two runs on five hits, over 5-1/3 innings against Seattle. The kid with the mafioso name struggled early in the season. He has turned it around and has posted seven quality starts in his last 14 outings. Lucchesi has gone 4-4 with a 4.00 ERA over that stretch. He is facing Tampa Bay for the first time and owns a 2-1 record and 3.99 ERA in six career interleague starts.

SF Giants

Phillies and Giants Trying to Stay in NL Wildcard Hunt

The San Francisco Giants and the Philadelphia Phillies will meet on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball tonight. Both teams are fighting to stay in the National League Wildcard race. Tonight's game may go a long way in determining which team is up for the stretch run as the division leaders, and teams ahead of them, show no signs of slowing down.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, ESPN; LINE: Phillies -109; O/U: 9 Under -105.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Jake Arrieta (8-8, 4.41 ERA) vs. Giants LH Conner Menez (0-1, 5.73)

Kevin Pillar has proven to be a rare constant in the Giants' revolving outfield door. The outfield has had cameos from the likes of Connor Joe and Mike Gerber this season. Pillar looks to continue his recent hot streak Sunday night against the Phillies in the final game of their four-game series.

Pillar and Evan Longoria both homered in Saturday's 3-1 victory. The Giants won for just the third time in their last 10 games. Pillar has gone deep in back-to-back games and is 13-for-36 over his last 12 games. San Francisco entered the National League wild card race by going 19-6 in July. They are on the verge of blowing it by averaging only 3.6 runs over its past 10 games. That has to improve if they want to start winning again.

The Phillies snapped a three-game losing streak with Friday's 9-6 victory. The team saw their bats return to silent mode again on Saturday against Jeff Samardzija. The "Notre Dame Hippie" only allowed one run on two hits over eight innings. Bryce Harper blasted two homers and drove in four runs on Friday. He made his second straight appearance in the leadoff spot on Saturday and went hitless in four at-bats.

This, That, and a Dart Throw

The Phillies' Arrieta's winless streak reached six games last Tuesday. He yielded two runs on five hits over five innings in a no-decision against Arizona. He has been limited with a bone spur in his right elbow. It will likely require offseason surgery. Buster Posey is 2-for-21 against Arrieta. The 2015 NL Cy Young award winner is 5-3 with a 2.57 ERA in nine career starts versus San Francisco. He has went 4-2 with a 3.05 mark in six outings at Oracle Park. OF Corey Dickerson has homered five times in his last eight games. He is 12-for-29 with 13 RBI's over that stretch.

The Giants' Menez made his second career start last Tuesday. He allowed five runs on six hits over six innings in a 5-3 loss to Washington. The 24-year-old earned his first call to "The Show" last month after going 2-0 with a 4.06 ERA in nine games (eight starts) for Triple-A Sacramento. Closer Will Smith has allowed two runs with 16 strikeouts in his last 10 appearances. Those appearances have covered 11 innings.

Mets Host Nationals in 3-Game Series

Mets Baseball

Can Mets Stay in MLB Playoff Race?

The Washington Nationals and the New York Mets will meet on Friday night in what could be a key game in the National League Wildcard race. The Mets took advantage of a weak spot in the schedule. They were able to jump back into the wild card race. Now they get a chance to prove themselves against stronger competition. They get to play 31 of their next 34 games against teams with winning records. It starts tonight in the opener of a three-game series against the Nationals.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MASN (Washington), SNY (New York); LINE: Nationals -125; O/U: 8 Under -115.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Stephen Strasburg (14-5, 3.72 ERA) vs. Mets RH Marcus Stroman (6-11, 3.07)

The Mets have won 13 of its last 14 games. Every single one of them against teams under .500. They were able to claw within a half-game of the second NL wild card and is coming off a four-game sweep of the Miami Marlins.

The Nationals enter play Thursday two games ahead of the pack for the first NL Wild Card. They are coming off a three-game sweep of the Giants in San Francisco. The pitching staff surrendered a total of four runs in the series. Stephen Strasburg will try to keep that run going for Washington on Friday while the Mets turn to righty Marcus Stroman in search of a seventh consecutive victory.

This, That, and a Dart Throw

The Nationals' Strasburg had a string of wins in seven straight starts come to an end recently. He was knocked around for nine runs on as many hits in 4-2/3 innings in a loss at Arizona on Saturday. The former No. 1 overall pick served up three home runs in that outing. He had not surrendered a blast in his previous six starts. Strasburg is making his fourth start against New York this season. He is 1-0 with a 2.75 ERA in the first three chances. OF Adam Eaton has totaled 10 runs scored in the last eight games.

The Mets' Stroman is making his first home start since arriving via trade from the Toronto Blue Jays. He is searching for his first win in a Mets uniform after struggling in his debut. He was touched for three runs on seven hits. He had a pair of walks in 4-1/3 innings at Pittsburgh on Saturday and did not factor in the decision. Stroman has yielded three or fewer earned runs in each of his final seven starts for Toronto. He faces Washington for the first time in his career. OF Michael Conforto is 4-for-6 with three home runs and six RBI's in the last two games.
