Mets and Giants Meet in Possible MLB Trade Deadline Showcase

SF Giants

Are Giants Sellers or Try to Fight for MLB Playoffs?

With just two weeks to go before the trade deadline, and remember there’s only the July 31 deadline now, waiver or no waiver like in the past. Two National League teams with uncertain futures will meet this afternoon when the San Francisco Giants host the New York Mets.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1, WPIX (New York), NBCS Bay Area (San Francisco); LINE: Giants -155; O/U: 9 Under -112.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Walker Lockett (0-1, 11.74 ERA) vs. Giants RH Jeff Samardzija (7-7, 3.93)

The Question now is if the Giants are going to be sellers or stay put. They pulled even at .500 for the first time since Opening Day. The San Francisco Giants now are in prime position to make a run at the second wild-card spot in the National League. The Giants carry a season-high seven-game winning streak into this afternoon's contest against the Mets. This is a team who has scored a total of two runs in the first two games of the series.

San Francisco rallied for a 3-2, 16-inning victory in the opener before escaping with a 1-0 win on Friday. Alex Dickerson scored from first base on left fielder Dominic Smith's error with two outs in the 10th inning. Tyler Beede allowed three runs over eight innings for the surging Giants. The squad has won 14 of their last 16 and pulled within two games of the second wild card.

The Mets are nine games under .500 after losing two straight following a four-game winning streak. Rookie Pete Alonso leads the team with 32 home runs and 72 RBI's. He went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Friday's loss and might be due for a day off after participating in last week's All-Star events.

This, That, and a Dart Throw

Both of these teams are still technically in the N.L. Wild Card hunt. Given their records, it’s almost certain the Giants and Mets will be sellers at the deadline. San Francisco's 27-15 record since June 1 is third-best in the NL behind Washington (27-12) and Atlanta (29-13).

San Francisco will showcase Jeff Samardzija in this matchup. The 34-year-old righty has been profitable for Giants bettors this year. He has led the team to a 10-9 record with the OVER at 12-6-1. Samardzija could be a good pick-up for a contending team. He has almost $30 million remaining on his contract, which runs through 2020.

Samardzija won his third straight start on Monday. He allowed two runs with nine strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings versus Colorado. The right-hander has posted a 5.93 ERA over five starts in June, but has allowed four runs over 21 2/3 frames in three turns this month. Wilson Ramos is 6-for-16 with three homers against Samardzija. He is 0-5 with a 7.32 ERA in 11 career games (five starts) versus the Mets.

The Mets will likely go with Walker Lockett who was called up from Triple-A. He is set to spot start for another injured starter, Zack Wheeler. Their rotation is chaotic as ever. Wheeler has shoulder fatigue, whatever the hell that is, and hit the IL last week. Their is a possibility that he, Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz will be put on the trading block. Lockett gave up at least four earned runs in both of his starts late last month. Lockett started for Triple-A Syracuse last Saturday. He allowed one run and eight hits with four strikeouts while throwing 88 pitches in 5 1/3 innings.

The Dart Throw: Giants 6, Mets 4.
