Fantasy Aces Daily Fantasy Golf: The Barclays Player Picks

Since we’re in the FedExCup Playoffs, we have one of the strongest
fields of the year. The entire 125 invited—119 are in attendance—have at
some point performed well this year.

Jordan Spieth (FantasyAces $7,000) headlines the field, holding a
commanding points lead heading into The Barclays. However, due the
structure of the playoffs, there are numerous contenders for the title.

This year’s edition of The Barclays lands at Plainfield CC. Look for the
ball strikers who know how to work the ball and are good around the
greens. Due to the lack of length, this course brings the entire field
into play.

It’s slightly different building lineups for the playoffs. This is an
elite field and all have some aspect of their game that I like. Whether
it’s a balanced lineup or high-low, begin with a foundation of who makes
you feel the most confident, regardless of price tag.







SLEEPERS







Davis Love III (FantasyAces $3,400)


I may be completely off my rocker and please send me a tweet if you
think that’s the case, but I’m going to ride the momentum. He may be 51
years old, but he’s a 51-year-old who just a few days ago became the
third-oldest player to win an event in tour history.

One of the contributing factors to his win is that Love III performs
well on Donald Ross designs. Last week’s course at Sedgefield is a
Donald Ross design—until this year, it was the final Donald Ross design
on tour. Now, we welcome Plainfield CC and another Donald Ross design.
These courses don’t require a ton of length; they require a well-rounded
game and experience. I said not to worry about price and I am doing
just that with Davis Love III.





ULTIMATE SLEEPER







Webb Simpson (FantasyAces $4,700)





I’m sticking with the Donald Ross theme again with Webb. He has a
little more game than Davis Love III but is in the same boat. He had a
good showing last week with a T-6 and is consistent from tee to green.
Webb hits nearly 70% of his greens and if you do that here, you have a
good shot at birdie. The greens last week picked up speed, and when Ross
greens become fast, they become difficult. That being said, I like to
confidence boost Webb gained last week and expect the 40^th ranked player in the FedExCup standings to make a big move.





TOP PLAYERS







Rickie Fowler (FantasyAces $5,750)


Fowler finished well at the Quicken Loans with a 2^nd place
finish and he’s having a career year. It comes down to confidence when
we discuss Rickie, and this year he has it. The Players Championship
winner is looking for his third win worldwide and is definitely in the
hunt for the FedExCup title. Rickie also has good history at The
Barclays with top 10 finished in each of the last two years. I expect to
see the same this week—Fowler has every shot in the bag and is an
emerging superstar.





WINNER







Matt Kuchar (FantasyAces $5,700)


It’s been a quiet year for Matt, but once again, here he is in the hunt for the title. In 2011, Kuchar finished in 2^nd at Plainfield behind 54-hole champ Dustin Johnson. Kuchar has come on strong of late and currently sits 26^th in the FedExCup standings. He has two 7^th
place finishes in his last three events including, a T-7 at the PGA
Championship. Always a good ball striker, Kuchar has performed his best
when the most is on the line. Expect Matt to keep it going and move up
in the standings with a win at The Barclays.

TIP OF THE DAY


Always consider the highest-priced pitcher.


Consider, I said. Not blindly embrace.


As
stated Monday, I am no longer opposed to diving in big-time on pitchers
at FantasyAces. And Tuesday’s No. 2 on the salary charts, the Mets’ Jacob deGrom (FantasyAces $7,520) is an easy choice.


The question is: Do I pair him with the only guy more costly, the Pirates’ Gerrit Cole (FantasyAces $7,750)?

There are several decent alternatives at a variety of prices. In the
past, I would have recommended filling in a hitting lineup around
deGrom, then seeing how much money is left for a second pitcher.

If you had a lot, then Cole and the Cardinals’ Michael Wacha (FantasyAces $7,100) would be worth considering.

If you could only afford a mid-priced guy, no problem. The Blue Jays’ Mark Buehrle (FantasyAces $5,850), Giants’ Chris Heston (FantasyAces $5,750) and Rays’ Nate Karns (FantasyAces $5,550) have intriguing matchups.

And there’s even a guy near the bottom of the salary charts — the Padres’ Odrisamer Despaigne (FantasyAces $5,000) — who could be a good fit based on his success against the Giants.

Alas, that’s not how I play the game anymore. I focus on pitchers first, and that gets me back to the top of the charts.

So, what about Cole?

Gotta say: I don’t like him. I mean, not in this matchup.

The
Royals hit righties well (fifth-best season OPS, .750) and nobody has
scored more runs (22) since the All-Star break. Plus, Cole hasn’t been
great in his two starts this month (3.00 ERA).

Frankly, Wacha is a better option. His opponent is far weaker. The White
Sox are 25th in OPS against right-handers (.673) and they’ve scored
half as many runs as the Royals since the break (11).

Wacha’s season splits are on par with Cole, and his price is $650 less.

Actually, I really don’t care about the price. I just want the best pitcher with the best matchup.

Tuesday, that’s Wacha.


MUST PLAY


Troy Tulowitzki, Rockies shortstop (FantasyAces $6,000).



It’s going to be a challenge to fit a $6,000 hitter in with two high-priced pitchers. But it’s a challenge worth taking.

This guy is on one of his hot streaks, and that makes him Priority 1 (among hitters) if the Rockies are at home.

Not only is this game at Coors Field, but the Rockies will be facing a left-hander (Matt Harrison) whose issues I documented when he made his season debut before the break.

He lived up to his not-ready-for-primetime billing that night, giving up
six runs, five hits, five RBIs and two walks to the 16 right-handed
hitters he faced.

Good luck with Tulowitzki, who is 5-for-9 with two home runs since the All-Star break.





MUST AVOID


Adrian Gonzalez, Dodgers first baseman (FantasyAces $5,650).



If
you want to quibble and say Gonzalez is even hotter than the
aforementioned Troy Tulowitzki, I won’t debate it. He is 9-for-16 with
three home runs since the All-Star break, after all.

On the surface, you’d think Gonzalez would have a nice opportunity to pad those stats against the Braves’ Alex Wood,
who doesn’t pitch well at home (1.70 WHIP, highest among Tuesday’s
starters) and hasn’t been in good form anywhere in July (8.49 ERA).

But most of the damage against Wood has been done by right-handed
hitters, which Gonzalez isn’t. As his .623 OPS indicates, Wood is one of
those lefties who gets lefties out.

Want further proof? Consider this: Wood has faced Gonzalez nine times in
his career. He’s struck him out on four of those occasions, while
giving up a lone single in the other five at-bats.

It’s history vs. hot here, and I’m siding with history.


HISTORY LESSON






Speaking of one-side matchups …

Giants catcher Buster Posey (FantasyAces $5,650) has faced Padres right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne 12 times in his career.

Would you believe he’s gone 10-for-12 with four home runs?

Man, you’re gullible.

Actually, Posey has NEVER gotten a hit off the young rival. Yep, 0-for-12.

It’s part of Despaigne’s amazing early success against the Giants, whose
current roster has a cumulative .152 batting average against him in a
decent sample size (79 at-bats).

That’s why I mentioned Despaigne earlier when discussing pitching
options. He certainly is worth considering, at home, at the modest price
of $5,000.

Hey, if that’s what it takes to get Troy Tulowitzki in your lineup …


TODAY’S STACK PACK

Rangers vs. Rockies right-hander Kyle Kendrick.



Pick a high-scoring game. Any game other than the Rangers and Rockies. That’s mine.

Here’s a prediction: There will be twice as many runs scored in my game as in yours.

Bold? Perhaps. But not so bold when you look at the matchups.

I’ve already touched upon Rangers starter Matt Harrison. Granted, he’s
only pitched once. But he’s got a 13.50 ERA … and it’s about to go up.

Kendrick hasn’t been nearly that bad this season in a much larger sample
size. But it’s fair to say he’s been consistently less-than-mediocre.



He doesn’t get batters out on either side of the plate (.932 OPS vs.
lefties, .856 vs. righties) and, predictably, he’s got the only home
WHIP (1.57) that rivals the aforementioned Alex Wood among Tuesday’s
starters.

Has Kendrick faced the Rangers before? Glad you asked.

Outfielders Shin-Soo Choo (FantasyAces $4,600) and Josh Hamilton (FantasyAces $4,750), first baseman Mitch Moreland (FantasyAces $4,750) and designated hitter Prince Fielder (FantasyAces $5,600) each has a lifetime OPS of 1.200 or better against him.

High prices are going to be an issue here in stacking these guys. You also need to consider second baseman Rougned Odor (FantasyAces $4,600), who has seven hits, including two triples and a homer, since the All-Star break.

Choo, with two home runs in 11 career at-bats against Kendrick, would be my first choice.


ULTIMATE SLEEPER


Austin Barnes, Dodgers catcher (FantasyAces $3,000).



There is absolutely no reason to spend big bucks on a catcher Tuesday.

Two guys in the $4,000 range — the Orioles’ Caleb Joseph (FantasyAces $4,000), who has a brief but powerful history against the Yankees’ Nate Eovaldi, and the Rockies’ Michael McKenry (FantasyAces $4,250), a live body up against the aforementioned Matt Harrison — would suffice.

But Barnes is an even better bargain.

The Dodgers have catcher issues with A.J. Ellis on the disabled list and Yasmani Grandal out at least until Wednesday while recuperating from a concussion.

That opened the door for Barnes to start Monday, and he responded with two hits.

Now he’s up against a lefty (Alex Wood) who struggles with righties. It’s an even more promising opportunity than Monday.

When you’re spending big bucks on pitchers and your shortstop, it’s nice
to get at least one complementary guy basically for free.





INJURY ALERT

Getting a modestly-priced Cardinals right-handed hitter or two in your lineup against White Sox lefty Carlos Rodon would seem like a good idea, especially given his .817 OPS against righties.




Outfielder Randal Grichuk (FantasyAces $4,500) would be one such option.

Fellow outfielder Peter Bourjos (FantasyAces $3,650) would be an even bigger bargain if he gets the start.

The Cardinals held outfielder Jason Heyward out of Sunday’s
starting lineup because of a leg injury, and there’s really no rush to
get the left-handed hitter back in there against the lefty Rodon.

With Tommy Pham having recently been demoted back to Triple-A, that pretty much leaves Bourjos as the logical replacement.

He did just fine in Heyward’s place Sunday, getting on base four times
in seven plate appearances. And he’s flashed some power against lefties,
having hit two homers in 54 at-bats.

Check the lineups, and I’d recommend Grichuk first. But if that extra
$850 in savings pushes you toward Bourjos, I wouldn’t hesitate to pull
that trigger.

TIP OF THE DAY


Beware of pitchers returning from injuries.


Before you say, “Well, duh,” on this one, hear me out.


Yes, it’s obvious that you shouldn’t expect a pitcher making his
first start after a stint on the disabled list to be in midseason form.


But my caution here is more about the hitters he’ll be facing.





The Rays’ Jake Odorizzi (hamstring), Reds’ Raisel  Iglesias (oblique) and Dodgers’ Brandon Beachy (elbow) come off the DL to make starts Saturday.


Instinct tells us to load up on Astros, Marlins and Brewers against these right-handers.


The problem is: It’s hard to predict how far these starters are going
to go. Iglesias, for example, never threw more than 68 pitches in any
of his minor-league rehab starts, and Beachy has had two Tommy John
surgeries since he last pitched in a major league game two years ago.


The last thing you want is to play guys like Marlins first baseman
Justin Bour (.879 OPS vs. righties, .347 vs. lefties) and/or Brewers
first baseman Adam Lind (.950 OPS vs. righties, .648 vs. lefties), only
to see them faced left-handed relievers, against whom they struggle, in
their final two or three at-bats after the starters get pulled early.


It’s a risk you take in any matchup. You never know how much a starter is going to pitch.


But in these situations, early pitching changes are predictable. And that’s a variable you can do without.

MUST PLAY


Chris Davis, 1B, Orioles (FantasyAces $4,800).





Let me start off by saying Davis is hot (21 hits in his last 19
games) and has a nice — albeit brief — history against Nationals
right-hander Jordan Zimmermann (3-for-6 with a home run).


But this is more about Zimmermann and his frame of mind.


The right-hander has spent the better part of the last week awaiting
the birth of his second child. When it appeared imminent Friday, he was
placed on baseball’s new paternity list and was on hand for the birth of
a girl.


Zimmermann’s wife wasn’t even out of the hospital when he got a call asking if he could rush back and pitch Saturday.


So there he’ll be Saturday night, down the road in Baltimore, facing a
collection of Orioles who own a .306 lifetime average against him even
when he’s properly focused.


I recommend Davis retrieve his home run ball and sign it to Ava Kristeen.







MUST AVOID


All Padres vs. Rangers right-hander Colby Lewis.





It used to be that Colby Lewis pitching at the hitters’ paradise of Glove Life Park in Arlington was a fantasy feast.


Still is, at times. Just not Saturday.


Somehow in his less-than-mediocre career, Lewis has proven unhittable
to the Padres. Current San Diego players have come to bat 31 times
against him; only two have gotten hits.


That’s a .065 average and .218 OPS.


Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying you should pitch Lewis on
Saturday. Every measurable 2015 stat still labels him as a
less-than-average pitcher.


And it’s not like the Texas wind has started blowing in.


Before sneaking a sleeper like first baseman/designated hitter Brett Wallace (FantasyAces $3,000) in there against this fantasy gold mine, remember this: Sometimes rust looks a lot like gold.

HISTORY LESSON


Cardinals first baseman Mark Reynolds (FantasyAces $4,300) vs. Pirates right-hander A.J. Burnett.





The Cardinals benched Reynolds in favor of Dan Johnson on Friday night, and with good reason. The guy is 15-for-29 in the month of July.


Fifteen strikeouts, that is.


But Reynolds has to be back in the lineup Saturday, and that’s because of his history against Burnett.


Reynolds is 5-for-13 in his career against Burnett. All five of the
hits — two doubles and three home runs — have gone for extra bases.


That’s a 1.659 OPS that’s hard to overlook, even for a guy who’s hitting .138 this month.


The price is a little high for my liking. But here’s the good news:
If you play Reynolds on Saturday, I’m pretty sure you’re going to be the
only one.

TODAY’S STACK PACK


Giants vs. Phillies right-hander David Buchanan.





Few teams are as streaky as the defending champs.


Before Friday, they’d scored 10 or more runs in a game five times
this season. On those occasions, they came back the next day and
averaged 7.8.


Well, the Giants did the double-figure thing again Phillies, and they did it to their best pitcher, Cole Hamels.


Saturday they’ll take their cracks at Buchanan, who has experience in
high-scoring games. Opponents averaged 5.8 in the five games he started
before the Phillies jettisoned him to Triple-A two months ago.


He’s just resurfacing now, complete with his 2.07 road WHIP, .826 OPS against left-handed hitters and .982 against righties.


It’s the wrong place, wrong time for a comeback.


Second baseman Joe Panik (FantasyAces $4,750), shortstop Matt Duffy (FantasyAces $4,700) and outfielder Hunter Pence (FantasyAces $5,300) are must-starts.










ULTIMATE SLEEPER


Jonny Gomes, Braves outfielder (FantasyAces $3,500).





In a day game at Coors Field pairing a pitcher who has struggled on the road (Atlanta’s Matt Wisler, 1.76 WHIP) against a guy who has had more than his fair share of problems at home (Colorado’s Jorge de la Rosa, 1.83 WHIP), you know your rivals are going to load up on Braves and Rockies.


I suggest you do the same, but with a twist.


Gomes hasn’t done anything spectacular of late, but he quietly does have hits in each of his last three starts.


No doubt, he remains under the radar.


That could change Saturday. He’s matched up with de la Rosa, who he’s
faced four times in his career. The result? A single, double and home
run — a .750 average and whopping 2.350 OPS.


After a pair of virtual pitchers’ duels — two 5-3 Rockies wins — to
open the series, you know a fireworks display looms Saturday.


It will be no surprise if Gomes helps ignite it.

INJURY ALERT


Few guys need a break more than Giants catcher Buster Posey (FantasyAces $5,600), who sat out games Tuesday and Wednesday with what is being called minor hamstring soreness.





Sure enough, the All-Star was back in the San Francisco lineup for
Friday’s 15-2 shellacking of the Philadelphia Phillies, and contributed
two hits to it.


But it was his first at-bat that was most telling. And troublesome.


Posey came to the plate with the bases loaded and grounded weakly to
third base. It hardly qualified as a double play ball, but Posey ran no
more than half-speed to first base and got doubled up, costing him (and
his daily fantasy owners) an RBI.


The Giants certainly don’t need Posey to play Saturday against the
aforementioned David Buchanan of the Phillies. It’s possible he will get
a “catcher’s day off” — a chance to play first base.


Or maybe even another day off, which would be his third in the last four games.


Either way, he’s not going to be in my Stack Pack (see above). I
recommend you likewise pass on him and hope your rivals pay the steep
price for damaged goods.

Daily Fantasy Golf: The John Deere Classic Player Picks - Handicappers Hideaway

Once again, the field is less than stellar at this week’s PGA tour
stop, which I suppose is to be expected come major season. The course
should be getable for the field. With soft conditions, expect the
aggressive players to vault up the leaderboard. Experience, however,
will rule the day. Look for those players who have a good track record
at TPC Deere Run and/or have good form coming in.


This is the first week I’m going to say this, but building a high/low
lineup is probably the way to go. With a lackluster field, you need to
have a big name or two on the roster and you can take some chances with
the lower level players. I usually promote balance but it’s time to
change it up.

SLEEPERS







Spencer Levin (FantasyAces $3,550)


We have a Spencer Levin sighting! I rarely use Spencer due to his
lack of length, but he’s actually a great play for the week. Levin is
17th in Driving Accuracy and 52nd in Greens in Regulation. He had a good
finish in Memphis, finishing T22 at the FedEx St. Jude Classic. Places
like Harbor Town and TPC Deere Run are good for him because you need
accuracy more than length.










Ken Duke (FantasyAces $2,950)


Hello Mr. Duke, we meet again. Ken is a favorite of mine because you
look at his game and he doesn’t leap off the page, but he somehow places
well. Duke ranks 36th in Driving Accuracy and is playing solid of late.
He finished T10 at the Travelers and T29 at St. Jude. Ken seems to do
well on parkland style courses—when distance isn’t a factor, he’s
dangerous.













ULTIMATE SLEEPER







Fabian Gomez (FantasyAces $3,900)


Look out for Fabian Gomez, because he’s coming. It takes some time to
get acclimated to the tour and Fabian is starting to show signs of
brilliance. He broke through with the win at St. Jude, and TPC Deere Run
is another good fit for him. He’s 70th is Driving Accuracy, which is
decent, but 27th in Birdie Avg. and 15th in Putting Avg. When scoring is
vital, Fabian brings it. Look for him to rise up the leaderboard again
this week.





TOP PLAYERS



Steve Stricker (FantasyAces $5,950)


Stricker isn’t currently at his best form, but he’s the horse for
this course. A three-time champion here, when Steve steps on the grounds
of TPC Deere Run he finds that Midwest magic. The Wisconsin native is a
good driver of the ball and an even better putter. The silky smooth
stroke works very well on these bentgrass greens. Steve had a T40 at
Memorial but look for him to finish considerably higher this week.







Zach Johnson (FantasyAces $7,150)


TPC Deere Run is definitely home of the Zach attack. Johnson has five
top 3 finishes in his last six starts here, including a title in 2012.
He ranks 9th in Driving Accuracy and 57th in Greens in Regulation. A
true magician with a wedge from 125 yards and in, he’s definitely
cracked the code at TPC Deere Run. Expect to see his name near or at the
top of the leaderboard once again.

Ryan Moore (FantasyAces $6,200)


It’s hard to say what kind of year Ryan is having. He has a win and
some decent finishes to go along with some poor ones. The one thing I
will say is that his game fits this track, and with a weaker field, Ryan
is one of the top names. Moore ranks 13th in Driving Accuracy and 28th
in Strokes Gained Total. A very good ball striker, Moore finished T18 at
Memorial and is looking for another top finish. He has a funny way of
sneaking up on you and getting a win, so don’t be left out when Ryan is
raising the trophy.
