ACC Tournament: Virginia and Clemson Tangle in Semis

Battle of Ranked Teams in ACC Tournament Semifinals

The 19th-ranked Clemson Tigers and the Top-ranked Virginia Cavaliers will meet on Friday at Barclays Center. This ACC Tournament Semifinal matchup will tip-off at 7 pm EST. ESPN will have the coverage.

This is the fourth time in five seasons Virginia will play in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament. They dispatched Louisville for the third time this season 75-58 in Thursday's quarterfinals.

Their opponent, Clemson, ended Boston College's Cinderella run with a 90-82 win on Thursday.

Oddsmakers opened the Cavaliers as -7-point favorites versus the Tigers, while the game's total opened at 118. The line is now Virginia -8 and the total is down to 116.5.

The Tigers are one of the ACC's original members. They have never won an ACC Tournament title. To do that this season, they will have to upset the tournament and nation's top team.

Virginia top defense clamped down on Clemson 61-36 in Charlottesville back in late January. It was the Tigers' worst game of the season. The Tigers shot just 32 percent for the game. They were an awful 3 of 20 from beyond the arc.

Clemson scored just 13 second-half points in that matchup.

Cavaliers D was the Story of the Season and ACC Tournament

The Cavaliers' defense continues to be the story of the season. It doesn't help to have a from time to time. That hot offense found it's way to Barclays Center on Thursday as Virginia shot 52.5 percent against Louisville.

Five players scored in double figures. The Cavs were led by Kyle Guy, who had 19 points despite playing with a bulky brace on his left knee. He took to the brace after suffering a sprained MCL last Saturday against Notre Dame.

Clemson fought off a pesky Boston College team. BC was looking for their third win in as many days. Guard Gabe DeVoe scored a game-high 25 points while Shelton Mitchell scored 21.

The Tigers overcame a slow start to beat the Eagles.They will need to play their best game of the season to knock off Virginia. This is a team that has allowed just one opponent to shoot 50 percent all season. That opponent was Louisville.

Virginia was impressive with its offense against the Cardinals. It was that rock solid defense that won the game. The D held Louisville to just 37 percent shooting. That included just one made field goal in the final nine minutes of the game.

The Cavaliers will be looking for their third championship game appearance since 2014. They are 1-1 in those previous matchups.
