Lots on the Line as Spurs Host Warriors

Spurs Basketball

Spurs and Warriors Honing Team for Postseason

The San Antonio Spurs battle the Golden State Warriors on Monday at AT&T Center. The stellar matchup will round out the nights action on ESPN. Tip-off is set for 10:30.

Oddsmakers opened the Spurs as -6.5-point favorites versus the Warriors, while the game's total opened at 209. The Spurs are now 7-point favorite and the total is down to 200.5.

Tonight's game between San Antonio and Golden State is important for many reasons. One is the Spurs' push to clinch a spot in the playoffs. The Warriors' are also attempting to move closer to the NBA's best record.

Momentum is also playing key into this matchup.  Bboth squads are looking to create a mental edge against the other should they meet in the postseason.

The Warriors have beaten San Antonio the first three times the teams have met this season. The last one was a 110-107 come-from-behind victory in Oakland on March 8. Golden State has won the past four games against the Spurs. Including the past two in San Antonio.

A win for Golden State would give them more swagger. A victory for the Spurs would give them something to build on.

Spurs are On a Mini Winning Streak

The Spurs were a 117-101 winner in their most recent outing at home against the Minnesota Timberwolves. They covered the -4.5-point spread as favorites, while the total score (218) made winners of OVER bettors. LaMarcus Aldridge scored 39 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

A couple of baskets by Aldridge, a 3-pointer by Danny Green, and a jumper by Rudy Gay turned a six-point Spurs' lead into a 107-92 advantage. This occurred with 5:56 to play and gave San Antonio the breathing room it needed down the stretch.

The Spurs' end-game prowess has been taken for granted most times during San Antonio's stretch of 20 straight seasons in the postseason. This year it has been anything but consistent.

The Spurs are on a three-game winning streak. It is their best run of victories since Dec. 23-28 when they won three in a row.

San Antonio had won 33 consecutive home games against the Warriors. The streak was from the start of the 1997-98 season up until April 10, 2016 when it dropped a 92-86 decision to Golden State for its only home loss of the 2015-16 campaign.

The Spurs have a 106-60 all-time edge against Golden State, including a 62-19 record at home.

Warriors Could be Tiring for Tonight's Game

The Warriors were a 124-109 winner in their most recent outing on the road against the Phoenix Suns. They covered the -5-point spread as favorites, while the total score (233) made winners of OVER bettors.

Tonight's game ends a run of three games in four nights for Golden State. They win over Phoenix on Saturday happened even with stars Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson on the sidelines.

Quinn Cook picked up the slack for the Warriors. He scored a career-high 28 points, including 16 in the third quarter. Nick Young also added 20 points for Golden State.  This was the Warriors 13th consecutive win over the Suns.

Draymond Green had a season-high 25 points and added 11 rebounds and eight assists. He narrowly missed a triple-double.

The Warriors are 13-7 when playing without Curry. They are 8-2 with Durant out and 2-1 without Thompson. Golden State is 2-4 without both Curry and Thompson. The Warriors are 9-3 since the All-Star break but have lost three of their past five games.

The Warriors are hopeful that second-year guard Patrick McCaw will return tonight after nursing a fractured left wrist in the past month.
