Can McGregor-Aldo sustain the hype? - Handicappers Hideaway

Can McGregor-Aldo sustain the hype?

By the time Conor McGregor and Jose Aldo finally get in the cage, there will have been nearly a year of build-up and hype.

The question is whether the hype can be sustained for another few months to ensure the fight lives up to its billing.

A venue and date for the eagerly-anticipated fight
has yet to be decided, with Aldo willing to travel over to Ireland to
fight in Dublin. The Dallas Cowboys Stadium, with a potential crowd of 100,000, has also been mentioned as a venue.

As for dates, two have been suggested. December 5,
but that would mean the MGM Grand in Las Vegas is unavailable and so
those other venue options would have to be considered. Alternatively,
January 2 is an option and that would be a stellar way to ring in 2016.

McGregor’s confrontation with Aldo in January of this year, after the Irishman beat Dennis Siver inside two rounds, ignited what is proving to be one of the biggest and best feuds in the UFC.

The grudge was due to be settled in July at UFC 189 at the MGM Grand, but featherweight champion Aldo pulled out just two weeks before after suffering a rib injury in training.

In the Brazilian’s place, in stepped Chad Mendes
and he put McGregor through a real test as ‘The Notorious’ was given the
opportunity to prove that he has plenty of substance to back up all the
trash talking which he has been involved in during his career.

Mendes took McGregor down on several occasions,
with his wrestling style causing his opponent trouble. But McGregor
demonstrated his sheer strength with a TKO win just before the end of
the second round.

It was a notable win for McGregor, who became the
interim featherweight champion as a result. Mendes has twice fought
Aldo, losing inside

the opening round in their first meeting in January 2012. Mendes was
then denied by a unanimous decision against Aldo on what was the
Brazilian’s last fight in October last year.

McGregor is right to point out it’s that fight
which has the most relevance regarding his eventual meeting with Aldo.
Certainly, the fight between the two enemies is going to be much closer
than many people had previously considered it would be.

In extending his winning streak to 14 fights by
beating Mendes inside two rounds, McGregor has shown he is worthy of his
status as the most credible, and No.1 ranked, challenger to Aldo. So
much so, that if you want to bet on McGregor vs Aldo, then the Irishman is the odds-on favourite to win.

That may be a little premature given Aldo’s career
record, but the reigning champion must beware the dangers of not
treating McGregor seriously. Aldo says he didn’t watch McGregor’s win over Mendes and that could prove to be a mistake, if such a statement is true.

By the time the fight takes place, it will be over
a year since Aldo will have fought. He can’t afford to go into a bout
with McGregor undercooked now his title challenger has shown he can walk
the walk, as well as talk the talk.

UFC 174 Odds: Johnson Defends Flyweight Belt Against Heavy Hitting Bagautinov

Betting on UFC 174

One of the world’s most impressive pound-for-pound fighters will set
out to defend his flyweight championship this weekend when Demetrious
Johnson takes the octagon at UFC 174. The MMA odds lead heavily in
Johnson’s favor against challenge Ali Bagautinov, but don’t assume that
it can’t still go either way.

Bet on MMA at Bovada and get a free 50% bonus.

While Johnson’s -600 UFC 174 odds suggest that he’ll simply overwhelm
Bagautinov in his fourth title defense, a quick look at their fighting
styles reveals that things could end abruptly for the king.

Whereas Johnson has a plethora of skills that allow him to thrive in
fights that go the distance, or submit opponents when necessary,
Bagautinov is an explosive strikeout artist, volatile enough to have
earned himself the nickname Puncher.

Like any fight that features one of the world’s elite athletes, most
eyes will be on Johnson as he sizes up his latest threat and then goes
to work. Bagautinov, the +400 underdog, then, can catch the entire UFC
betting community off guard with one devastating blow.

Is this the day that Johnson’s reign atop the flyweight division comes crashing to a halt?

UFC 171 Odds: Hungry Hendricks as Close to Welterweight Title as Ever

Betting on UFC 171

Johny Hendricks came about as close as he could to winning the welterweight title without actually winning it last November, the loser of a controversial decision in Georges St-Pierre’s final fight before taking a leave of absence. Now he’s the hands-down UFC betting favorite heading into another title fight for the belt GSP vacated.

Bet on UFC 171 at Bovada and get a free 50% bonus.

This Saturday at UFC 171, Hendricks will take to the octagon as the -450 favorite against Robbie Lawler. While both are equals battling for the empty throne, one can’t help but empathize with Hendricks as the one who could have reasonably won the belt last November and who ought to be especially motivated to make it official this time out.

Lawler is no slouch on the MMA circuit, and a legitimate betting option with +325 UFC odds in the headlining event on the main card. If the belt is Hendricks’ to lose, then Lawler is an intriguing underdog capable of pulling the rug out from under the UFC betting community.

Is this Hendricks’ time to shine now that GSP has stepped away from the game? Did Hendricks’ punishing performance in their last bout perhaps contribute to St-Pierre choosing to take a leave of absence? Find out Saturday.

MMA Betting – Machida, Hughes tipped for UFC 98 glory

May 20, 2009

Indy 500 odds and French Open betting are the minds of those who are betting sports this weekend, but you shouldn’t forget about the exciting matches lined up for UFC 98, which will be held this Saturday in Las Vegas. In the main event, Lyoto Machida will challenge Rashad Evans for the light-heavyweight championship in a meeting of undefeated fighters, while a legend will be making his curtain call as Matt Hughes takes on Matt Serra.

Evans vs Machida odds (Machida -200)

Machida (14-0) is known as one of the most technical fighters in the UFC, but he showed a new skill when he knocked out Thiago Silva in the first round of their meeting in UFC 94. Even before he got to UFC, Machida was beating fighters like Rich Franklin, Stephen Bonnar and B.J. Penn. The next scalp on his list is Evans (13-0-1), who was supposed to fight “Rampage” Jackson, who needed jaw surgery from an injury suffered in a training camp. Evans was actually being dominated by Forrest Griffin before catching him with a knee that turned the tables, and he came away with the belt. He’ll need a much better performance against Machida, who is rather conservative, but he doesn’t make many mistakes and hopes that his opponents will grow impatient, which will lead them to a mistake. This is Evans’ chance to show he belongs up there with the big names of the UFC. Too bad it’ll end badly. (MMA betting pick: Machida)

Hughes vs Serra odds (Hughes -300)

There’s no love lost between these two fighters, who were the coaches for season No.6 of the “Ultimate Fighter”, and they’ve had a couple of fights already cancelled due to injuries. Hughes (43-7) has been a welterweight champion twice and is considered the best fighter ever at that weight class, but with three losses in his last four fights, he sees the end of the road is near. Serra (9-5) hasn’t fought since he was routed by Georges St. Pierre at UFC 83. There was a year-long hiatus for Serra before that fight, as he had beaten GSP for the belt at UFC 69, and this could end the same way. Hughes will be focused to go out on top, especially because of the bad blood between he and Serra. (MMA betting pick: Hughes)
