Happy Tuesday, everyone. What could be happy about a Tuesday? Simple. DraftTeam holds a $2,000 MLB Tuesday Triple Play contest
every week, so if that doesn’t alter your perception of this day of the
week, we don’t know what would. What’s that? Free beer? Well, yes, we
suppose that would work, too.



Let’s get you set for play on Tuesday, July 21.



Just over a month ago, we advised picking up Yankee 3B Alex Rodriguez
($10,583) as he needed just one more hit to join the 3,000-hit club.
Sure enough, he homered that night to hit the mark. On Tuesday, however,
we’re going to avoid A-Rod. He came out of the break bashing (see video
below), but is now just 1-for-8 with five Ks in the last two games.
More importantly, Rodriguez has always struggled against Baltimore SP
Wei-Yin Chen (2-for-13 with five strikeouts). Yes, ARoid is enjoying a
tremendous comeback season, but if you’re looking for a 3B for Tuesday,
spend a bit more and get Kyle Seager ($11,363). You can thank us
tomorrow.

At the beginning of the season, we talked about how Washington SS Ian
Desmond ($4,745) was the only big leaguer with three straight 20-20
seasons and wondered what he had planned for 2015, the final season of
his contract. Well, this was obviously not what he had in mind. We’re
past the 90-game mark now and Desmond has yet to reach double digits in
homers or steals while his batting average has plummeted to career worst
levels as he’s struggled to hit his way out of a wet paper bag.





Yet, we are going to recommend him as a sneaky cheap option. Yes,
Desmond has to face the nasty Jacob DeGrom, but we like the life his bat
showed Monday as he smoked a two-run dinger and singled to snap a
3-for-44 skid. Desmond is someone that’s feasted on Mets pitching at
Nationals Park (.339 in the last 16 games there), so take that into
consideration as well.

DFS Notes

• Tonight marks the MLB debut of SP Aaron Nola ($14,693), one of the
  top prospects for the Phillies. The seventh overall pick from last year
  has soared through the minors very quickly, and we like his matchup
  tonight (vs. TB).
• Seattle SP Taijuan Walker ($19,142) was on a major roll as July
  began, but in his last two starts the bubble has burst (11 IP, 13 hits,
  12 runs, 11 ER, 3 HR). His ERA has risen a half a run based on this pair
  of duds.
• Los Angeles Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw (next scheduled to pitch
  Thursday), was looking somewhat human in late-June, but is really
  rounding into form since with just two earned runs allowed over his last
  31 innings.

Wow, can you believe another week of Daily Fantasy Baseball has flown
by, bringing us to Friday already? Well, the good news, it’s not only
the weekend but another chance for you to enter one of DraftTeam’s MLB $3,000 High Heater contests.



You know what’s awesome about fantasy sports? Professional sports all
involve games we have no control over, but by drafting you own roster,
you regain that sense of control — or at least a semblance of it. That’s
empowering!



Exactly 13 months ago today, we discussed how Melky Cabrera was part of a
select quartet of players that hadn’t gone hitless in back-to-back
games through the first two months and change of the 2014 season. He
wound up enjoying a tremendous comeback season, proving he was past the
PED scandal.



Cabrera signed with the White Sox this winter and he hasn’t come close
to duplicating his fine 2014. His hits are down, his walks are down and
his speed has evaporated. After getting on base more than 35 percent of
the time last year, Cabrera is barely doing so 30 percent of the time
this season.



Now, the good news: the Melk Man is scorching in July. He homered
Thursday to extend his batting streak to eight games (see video below
for one of the biggest hits of his streak) and improve his slash line
this month to .379/.394/.690 — just as the Sox are heating up, winning
seven of nine. Looking for a second half sleeper? Cabrera could be your
man.







The good news: Houston 3B Luis Valbuena returned to action Thursday
after missing three games with a toe woe. The bad news? He went 0-for-3,
dropping his BA to .201 — fourth worst in the bigs. Still, Valbuena has
clubbed a team-leading 19 dingers — an amazing figure considering he
only has 56 hits in total. You don’t usually see a player like Valbuena
having that high a percentage of homers among his hits; that’s usually
reserved for the Mark McGwires and Barry Bonds of the world.

Fantasy Baseball Notes

• Houston LOOGY Joe Thatcher was enjoying a stellar campaign, but he’s
  been scored on in consecutive outings to see his ERA rise from 2.04 to
  3.44. Wildness has been his undoing this year. Ah, the perils of being a
  specialist reliever.
• Speaking of Astros relievers, how about the job Will Harris has done
  this year? With over a strikeout per inning and a mere 16 hits allowed
  in 34 appearances and 39 2/3 IP, he arguably deserves a spot on the
  All-Star team.
• After seeing essentially full-time at-bats and hitting .293 in 2013,
  OF J.B. Shuck has only received 184 at-bats over the last two seasons
  combined. He deserves more action this year based on his play, but he’s
  been rotting on the pine.

Tuesdays are generally a boring day of the week, except when it comes to Daily Fantasy Baseball at DraftTeam, as we’ve got our weekly MLB $2,000 Triple Play contest — the best thing to happen to Tuesday since Ruby.




Boston C Ryan Hanigan ($7,887), who had been out since May 1 with a
broken bone in his hand, was activated on Thursday, and it took him a
couple of games to shake off the rust, but on Monday he went 3-for-3
with a walk and drove in two runs. This veteran backstop is no offensive
star, but even though he was the only starting this year because of
injury he was enjoying his best season since 2012 before getting hurt.
The way Boston’s offense is kicking into gear now, Hanigan could be a
sneaky play against Dan Haren and the Fish Tuesday.




In late-July last year, we advised avoiding Arizona 1B Paul Goldschmidt
($13,599), and sure enough, he went 0-for-4 and struck out twice that
night. This time, despite a very tough opponent in Texas SP Yovani
Gallardo, we are going to go with the NL’s All Star first baseman. He
heated up last week (although cooled somewhat the last couple of days),
and has always hit Gallardo well (5-for-9 with a double, three walks and
three RBI). With a walk in seven straight games, Goldschmidt has added
to his NL lead with 66 free passes on the season (hence his amazing .466
OBP).




We love the rookie season Atlanta 2B Jace Peterson ($7,399) is putting
together, and believe he’d have been a better pick as the NL All Star at
second base than DJ LeMahieu. However, Peterson seems to be hitting a
bit of a wall, having gone 4-for-28 over the last week and change, so
we’re avoiding him for now. A better choice at the keystone corner for
Tuesday is Oakland’s Ben Zobrist ($8,933).

DFS Notes

• Baltimore SP Kevin Gausman ($13,290) has not yielded a home run
  since April 19 and over his last six starts he has a 2.04 ERA. It’s
  about time the O’s set this kid free.
• Speaking of young hurlers that are finally getting their shot, how
  about Andrew Heaney ($22,626) of the Angels? All he’s done is go 1-0
  with a 1.38 ERA in his first two starts. Not bad considering how badly
  he was beaten up with the Marlins last year.
• Oh what the hell? Let’s keep the young pitcher theme going.
  Seattle’s Taijuan Walker ($27,371) has won his last five starts,
  recording a 1.67 ERA in the process. Did we mention he’s just 22? Well,
  there you have three reasons that the future of pitching in the AL in
  bright.
