NHL Odds: Bruins, Red Wings on the Bubble - Handicappers Hideaway

Will an untimely, late-season collapse prevent the Boston Bruins from
making the playoffs? Their fate could be decided Thursday night (7 PM
ET, NBCSN) when they host the Detroit Red Wings in a pivotal Atlantic
Division clash. The Red Wings have won six of their last nine games to
seize third place from Boston, who went 2-7 during the same span. This
will be Game No. 81 of the regular season for both clubs.

The Bruins (41-30-8) have performed better overall than the Wings
(40-28-11) this year, posting a plus-13 goal differential to Detroit's
minus-11. However, Boston netminder Tuukka Rask (.915 save percentage)
has been inconsistent this year, and the defense in front of him has
been thinned out by lower-body injuries to Kevan Miller and Dennis
Seidenberg. Both are listed as day-to-day.

Detroit (40-28-11) is making this late playoff push with Jimmy Howard
(.906 SV%) taking over the No. 1 goalie spot and Petr Mrazek (.920 SV%)
settling for back-up duties. This will be the second of back-to-back
contests for the Wings; at press time, Howard is projected to start both
games, but that could certainly change as we get closer to the opening
face-off.

NHL Odds: Wings Ahead of Avs in Standings, Behind in Bankroll

Betting on Red Wing Hockey

The Detroit Red Wings may be near the top of the NHL standings at
29-12-2-7, but they’re having a hard time beating the puck line at 24-26
ATS (minus-3.68 units). Compare and contrast to Detroit’s former
Western Conference rivals, the Colorado Avalanche. Although they’re
outside of the playoff picture right now at 21-18-7-4, the Avs are
making money hand-over-fist at 31-19 ATS (plus-9.19 units). Conveniently
enough, these two teams clash Thursday night in Denver at 9:00 PM ET on
NBCSN.

Bet on hockey at Bodog and get a free 100% bonus.

Detroit is doing quite well at both ends of the ice, ranking seventh
overall in both goals for (2.94) and against (2.44) per game. However,
the Wings haven’t covered enough at –1.5. Colorado, on the other hand,
is 23rd in goals for (2.50) and 20th in goals against (2.74), and
getting paid handsomely at +1.5.

The timing might be right for the Avalanche to put one over on Detroit,
too. The Wings are without starting goalie Jimmy Howard (.920 save
percentage) because of a groin injury, leaving Petr Mrazek (.907 save
percentage) to do the heavy lifting. Mrazek is 7-2 since taking over
between the pipes, but four of those wins were by a single goal.

NHL Odds: Revived Leafs Visit Red-Hot Wings

Betting on Red Wing Hockey

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been rebuilding for a decade. Have they
finally figured things out? They’ve started the 2014-2015 campaign at
14-9-2-1, racking up 10.36 units against the moneyline and a 17-9 record
against the puck line. We’ll see what the Leafs are made of on
Wednesday Night Rivalry (8:00 PM ET, NBCSN) when the Detroit Red Wings
welcome them to The Joe.

The Red Wings (17-6-2-3, plus-5.04 units) have the better record as
we enter the second trimester of the regular season. They’ve won seven
of their past eight games. Toronto is 5-2 in its last seven, which
includes a 4-1 victory over the Wings as a slim –102 home favourite.
Detroit won their previous two meetings this year. All three games went
under the posted total of 5.5 goals.

Toronto looks like a paper tiger when it comes to puck possession.
The Corsi and Fenwick stats are heavily in Detroit’s favor; the Leafs
have made up for it by scoring 3.42 goals per game, second in the league
as we go to press. However, the Wings are fourth at 3.11 goals per
game.

Anaheim Ducks (+175) at Detroit Red Wings (-220)

The big storyline here: Can the Wings keep winning at the Joe? Detroit is riding a franchise-best 18-game home winning streak at Joe Louis Arena and is just two wins back from the NHL record (shared by the 1929-30 Boston Bruins and the 1975-76 Philadelphia Flyers). As such, it’s no surprise the Wings are heavy favorites in this game – they haven’t lost at home since the beginning of November. But the Ducks present an interesting challenge, in that 1) They’ve been underachieving for most of the year, and 2) They’ve rattled off some pretty good performances as of late and are finally getting solid efforts from their star players. One such star is goalie Jonas Hiller, who looks to have rounded into the form that once made him one of the NHL’s best young netminders. The Ducks are also fresh off an emotional 3-2 overtime victory at home against Carolina, when reigning league MVP Corey Perry scored the sudden-death winner. The Ducks are hot and playing inspired hockey, knowing that if they have any shot at making the playoffs, it has to happen now. Could be a good sleeper pick for this playing the longshots on Friday.

Carolina Hurricanes (+110) at Colorado Avalanche (-140)

Speaking of Carolina, they’ll continue their western road swing with a stop in Denver to face the Avs. Colorado’s been wildly inconsistent of late, but has been getting a steady effort in net from J.S. Giguere, the veteran presence that’s keeping former No. 1 Semyon Varlamov bolted to the pine. Head coach Joe Sacco knows that with his team in the midst of a playoff race, every point is crucial – thus explaining his decision to play Giguere frequently over the last month. But questions remain: Can Giguere keep playing this well? At age 36, won’t he soon need a break? Giguere faced 31 shots in his last outing (a 5-2 win over Chicago) and while it’s likely Sacco will use him again against the ‘Canes, don’t be surprised if Varlamov makes a surprise appearance.

Chicago Blackhawks (+120) at San Jose Sharks (-150)

Once again, a game that focuses on the goalies. Chicago will turn back to netminder Corey Crawford to face the Sharks, this after Ray Emery failed in his opportunity to take the starting gig (he was on the wrong end of that 5-2 loss to Colorado mentioned above.) Crawford was brilliant last regular season and playoffs, but has been bad this year – that said, head coach Joel Quenneville is still confident the deeper Chicago gets into the season, the more they’ll be able to rely on Crawford as the No. 1.

NHL Odds: Central Contenders Clash as Blues Visit Detroit

The Red Wings are in pole position in the heated Central Division but with fast-rising St. Louis gaining traction behind them it may not be for long. Can the veterans behind Detroit?s continued dominance keep ahead of David Backes, T.J. Oshie and the Blues?

Get your NHL odds at Bovada's online sportsbook.

Though the Blues have flirted with success over the past two seasons, they've only actually qualified for the postseason once since the lockout. Having departed a tradition of playoff hockey with the work stoppage, the young contingent of current St. Louis stars will be anxious to start a new era this spring.

According to Bovada's NHL odds makers, the Blues have 15/1 odds of winning the Stanley Cup this season, a lofty goal considering their mediocre ceiling over the past half-decade. Is this the year the gritty franchise finally returns as a postseason force?

With months left in the regular season, fans looking for an idea of how the Western Conference playoff picture might unfold will be glued to the goings on of the Central Division. This midseason affair between two of its most likely contenders is as good an opportunity as any.

NHL Betting Preview: Underdog Leafs Host Wings in Original Six Clash

Two of the NHL's most celebrated franchises will square off in a Hockey Night in Canada matchup this Saturday as the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Detroit Red Wings on Bovada's NHL betting line.

Get your NHL odds and futures for the second half of the season today.

Though the season started strong for the hometown Leafs, the Buds have since slipped back down to the level of mediocrity they've grown accustomed to in recent memory. If this is to be the year they return to the postseason they'll have to turn their campaign around fast.

According to Bovada's hockey odds makers, the Maple Leafs have 30/1 odds of winning the Stanley Cup. In contrast to Toronto and its constant struggle, the Red Wings carry 13/1 odds on the NHL futures list.

Can Detroit take the opportunity to steal two points from an Original Six rivalry when the puck gets dropped? Currently in the upper half of the Western Conference playoff picture the Wings are as much a factor in the Central Division as ever.

With the one-two combination of Phil Kessel and Joffrey Lupul proving insufficient recently, Toronto will need to find a way to start turning point-production into victories. Does that start this weekend?
